On great nights, Aelius will have a full night’s rest. On good nights, Aelius will have five to six hours of sleep. On bad nights, Aelius will watch the digital numbers on his bedside table as his heart continues to rapidly thump thump, a hummingbird’s wings beating against his ribcage.
Tonight was a bad night.
Aelius couldn’t bear to watch his clock, the red number almost mocking him, taunting him to try and close his eyes. He pushed the sheets aside and climbed out of bed, limbs working a mindless rhythm. Aelius changed into a pair of gray sweatpants and pulled on a black hoodie; it was late, there was no one to impress. He quietly toed on his sneakers and left the apartment, the blood in his veins itching.
He left the building, no sense of sense or direction. Everything was air game and Aelius let his feet drag along the pavement. Eyes half-lidded, Aelius stumbled his way through dead streets and dark alleys, mind in a fog.
He walked a ways away – but how far? a mile? five miles? – until his feet stopped. Flashes of red and blue surrounded him and Aelius tiredly looked up to see himself in front the entrance of a…..gallery?
