guess what! she didn’t. gwyn was never introduced to be a love interest for anyone, she was introduced to support nesta through her journey.

the only character who has canonically been introduced as a love interest for azriel is elain. that is what’s written in the books, that is the direction SJM is going.

And who is similar to her? Oh yes, not Elain. Vassa. Vassa, the bird of flame is similar to the Lord of Fire.

And Elain's ideal man? Someone like Azriel, to whom she'd cling for some peace and quiet.

Who gives Azriel headaches? Mor, Cassian, Rhys, Amren...

Who does he want to sit with alone, in peace and quiet, going over gardening plans? Elain.

No, Lucien and Elain aren't compatible, but they are both magically powerful. The Cauldron took notice of that.

See the thing is Elain is not ok... she just hides it better than anyone else. She smiles, gardens, bakes, and says she's fine. But throughout the books we're given hints that she isn't.

With Feyre, her suffering was visible from page 1... she starving, hungry, exhausted, hunting.

With Nesta, her spiral was unavoidable... she was self destructing loudly

Elain has been written differently... she hides her suffering. She's learned that if she smiles, people relax. That being agreeable keeps the peace.

I think its also interesting to note that because she’s so good at pretending, even the people around her start believing she’s okay or at least when they do notice that she's not actually ok they don't push for more cause she doesn’t make it look serious from the outside. She isn’t destructive. She isn’t loud or visibly falling apart. She doesn’t look “concerning” enough. So her pain gets dismissed. Elain survives by keeping herself composed, by making herself quiet and manageable and because of that, no one realizes just how much she’s actually carrying. I've even seen a number of readers who believe that she’s okay. That she doesn’t need a story. That her place is to be “left gardening and baking.” As if having a hobby is a bad thing...

What's so wrong about enjoying something that gives you joy and brings you peace?

And she presented him in a way that, I think, she sees him. And honestly? is he a super attractive character? I think that's debatable. He is short-tempered at times, kind of permanently semi-annoyed, closed off, snappy, indifferent at other times. He didn't strike me as the regular romantasy MMC--the banter that GAs love to wax poetic about isn't actually present very much. He is not the cavalier, banter-y, indestructible sort of hero. In some ways, he is almost off putting. And I feel that SJM was so heavy handed with him on purpose. As if to prepare people for what to expect, but also, as kind of a warning?

He is almost the exact opposite of what a large part of the fandom made him out to be. And SJM said, no, this is actually how this character is. What you saw is him. What you saw in the bonus chapter is him. Again, what GAs absolutely refuse to acknowledge and see in their beloved bonus is exactly what SJM showed in HOFAS --Azriel WAS annoyed with Gwyn, he WAS lying to her, he MADE himself appear more accommodating. That's how he is. With most people. The day after Solstice he WAS aloof, angry and silent. In HOFAS, he is mostly aloof, annoyed, and challenges both Bryce and Nesta out right when they act up. His reaction to the unfavourable mention of his mother was swift and angry. So much so that Nesta nearly cowed in front of him and apologized. Most of the time, Azriel is avoidant, secretive and resentful.

Which is why his attitude towards Elain is so stark. Essentially, he melts around her. He softens. He laughs. He is a blade that is suddenly wrapped in a marshmallow and he loves it.

I think that buried under the heap of Headcanons, fantasies, misinterpretations and willfully obtuse misreadings of canon text the 'real Azriel' emerges. A cantankerous, stiff, solitary, lonely and tired warrior. Not a bantering, ribbon-cutting dudebro. Azriel is much more Malachi Vize than Casteel, or even Rhysand.

The ONLY time we see him crack, his facade soften, his eyes brighten is when he is around Elain. Sorry. That's just how it is.

Surely it was a coincidence that Azriel’s hand brushed against hers as they passed each other in the hall. Surely, he didn’t mean to snag one of her curls around his finger as they sat on the sofa, his arm resting across the back, hand so close to her that she could lean ever so slightly and rest her cheek upon it.

But when he trails his knuckles over her arm after picking a stray bramble from her dress? How he hesitates, for just a moment, his arms tightening slightly, before putting her down when they fly to the House?

To test her theory, she starts reaching back. The first time she does it, just a light touch against Azriel’s wrist, he nearly drops the dish she’d handed him. The second, her nails ghosting over his neck as he carries her through the sky, has his breath catching. By the third, he meets her in the middle.

Azriel helps her stand in the garden, when her legs are unsteady from kneeling for too long. Except he no longer drops her hand. At least, not right away. Not until they round the hedge, putting them in sight of the kitchen windows. Elain tentatively raises a hand to brush a streak of flour from his brow, after he helps her prepare lunch, Nuala and Cerridwen mysteriously absent, and gasps when he leans into her touch.
