While this probably means very little
And I repeat, this probably isn’t anything of importance. Another piece on non-information information.
However, what if, when SJM spoke of the outcomes surprising her, of where the story took her … what if it was this that she spoke of?
That the book turned out to be much more romance heavy, perhaps with multiple romances—Elriel, Vassien, Mor and someone, even other characters like Erie and even Tamlin, and not her typical girl bosses hacking their way through the story?
What if she really went into the emotional space? That if various romances? Exactly what we’ve been missing since ACOMAF.
Both Crescent City and ACOSF romances were sub-par and not well executed.
What if SJM is in her soft era? And she really leaned into yearning, desire, lust, heartbreak, love?
Again, it probably means nothing but I’ve been pondering this since March.
“𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒈𝒂𝒛𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝑬𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒖𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒍𝒚 𝒏𝒆𝒖𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒍, 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒊𝒕. 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎.”
…
“𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍, 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔.”
This is the last interaction we see between Elain and Azriel in ACOSF and I think it perfectly sets the stage for their romance. Their feelings have been slowly building for multiple books now and tension like that can’t be kept secret for long.
This commission by the talented thiaperezart captures the mutual yearning and desire between Elain and Azriel so beautifully! Fingers crossed we finally get to see Azriel on his knees for the woman he’s been so desperate for in the new books 💖

“The fandom is not what it used to be” = back then, we had control over the fandom and bullied Elriels away until they were a small group. Now Elriels are vocal, and their fandom is growing rapidly.

Btw, when Elain said that she needed 'sunshine' what she meant was she needed warmth and illumination. The Cauldron is described as deathly cold and black and who knows how she found her way back from its depths. She was the first to be thrown in and her experience was unique to her. Not only that, but her mind was in turmoil. Murky realm of visions and confusion. Elain needed a path out--a sunny path of illumination that would take out out of that shambolic state and which would lead her to clarity and understanding.
Elain needed physical warmth and mental clarity.
She didn't need Lucien. Lucien, who isn't associated with sunlight or the sun, but with fire. The Lord of Fire.
Eventually, clarity, that path that she yearned for, came from Azriel. He literally took her by the hand, and brought her out to the garden, offering her physical warmth. And then, he deduced what she was suffering from, naming her new powers and explaining what she was seeing in her head. He cleared the murky realm of her mind. He was the path. The Illuminator. The one who became the sunshine that she had asked for.
As someone who actually read the books, gwynriel stuff popping up in my feed is so fucking weird. It's just pulled out of someone's ass, and gwynriels are over here gushing over it. "The tension, the emotion, she's the light to his darkness". Honey where? I'm over here laughing my ass off at them. Because meanwhile, canon Az doesn't know Gwyn at all. And canon Gwyn doesn't give a fuck about Az, beyond proving her older trainer wrong. If we consider the three pages they're actually even in the same scene.
The ship is just totally pulled out of someone's ass, and they pretend it's canon when they just mistook their fanon for the books. Lmao it's so funny. Canon Az and Gwyn don't know a single thing about each other and don't care to know either. And gwynriels are over here acting like they're about to get married and have kids.
It was so weird for me too when I first saw it pop up, genuinely thought it was a booktok cult and y'know what? I was right, except that it didn't originate from booktok.
"she's the light to his darkness" im sorry, what? how? The fact even in their imaginary HCs they still steal from elriel because Elain and Azriel are canonically associated with dark and light.
We don't even know Gwyn's sexuality, once you let that sink in, Gwynriel becomes even more absurd. This whole ship was fabricated out of misinterpretation meanwhile...no one can claim Gwyn is straight. As for Azriel, even after meeting his mate, he was still ready to go down for another woman...what type of romance set up is that?
The ship itself isn't canon as Gwyn and Azriel aren't Lis. Thats a fact antis cannot accept.
you know whats rlly funny? when you argue with Gwynriels, you realise how much sh*t they pull from thin air and how much of their canon is wrong.
Gwynriel is such a strange phenomenon. With the way Gwynriels potray it, the ship has more substance but in canon? There is nothing between them.
literally everything reminds me of them wow
I think that the validity of any ship or MMC/FMC in the ACOTAR world can be easily determined by their proximity to all the outstanding storylines that are currently available to us.
Story Connected
Koschei Elain
Vassa Elain
Dusk Court Azriel/Nesta/Rhys (Elain)
Truth Teller/Gwydion Azriel/Elain
Autumn Court Lucien/Elain/Helion/Eris/Az Gwyn, nameless GF
Mate bond (reject.) Elain/Lucien/Az
Mate bond (2nd?) Elain/Az
Eris Mor/Rhys/Beron Gwyn (unless he is her dad)
Valkyries Gwyn/Nesta/Emerie
Vallahan (unsure of storyline) Mor
Sight Elain
Midgard Nesta/Az/Rhys/Amren/Mor?
Hewn City Mor/Rhys/Feyre/Kier
The IC Rhys/Cass/Az/Mor/Amren, the Archerons
Illyria (unsure of storyline) The bat boys, Nesta/Emerie/Gwyn because of Blood Rite win
Band of Exiles Lucien/Vassa/Jurian/Elain via Lucien/Vassa
Dead Trove Nesta/Elain directly, IC indirectly
Lightsinger Possibly Gwyn
I am sure I am forgetting something, but it seems to me that Elain is connected to 87% of all storylines directly, and the rest indirectly
Gwyn is connected to about 5%
Lucien/Az are connected to about 40% and 70% respectively
Rhys and Feyre are directly and indirectly connected to 90%
Mor is connected to about 50%
So let's do the math: Elain leads via direct association with 90% of all storylines, supporting characters are Az and Lucien
Secondary characters Mor/Lucien/Vassa (more than half of storylines)
Overarching characters: Feyre, Rhys, the IC, Nesta
Tertiary characters: Eris, Helion, Tamlin?
Level 4: Emerie, Gwyn, Beron, LoA (both might be higher depending on storyline), Kier (might be higher)
Am I exaggerating Elain's importance?
Yes, you are biased
No, she is connected to all of these storylines and will be the FMC
It will be a multi POV with 5-8 equally divided storylines
Gwyn will be the FMC
“…Elain had gone from lovely to devastatingly beautiful. Elain never seemed to realize it.”

"Azriel giving Elain Truth Teller isn't meaningful."
"Azriel risking his life to save Elain isn't meaningful."
"Azriel getting Elain a personalized gift isn't meaningful."
"Azriel spending his free time with Elain isn't meaningful l."
"Azriel figuring out that Elain is a seer isn't meaningful."
For literal YEARS the ELs have been like
"SJM is a fated mates author she would NEVER break up a pair of fated mates"
"Fated mates are endgame"
"Elriel will never work since Elucien are mates"
And now that SJM keeps talking about rejecting bonds and exploring free will and "what if the cauldron chose wrong"... now their arguments have changed. Now it's
"Oh well it could be an amazing story if Elain rejected the bond and still found her way back to Lucien"
🙄
Yeah, so honestly, I'd rather have an Elucien book than read a story where Elain rejects a bond and then goes back to Lucien. It's devaluing a mating bond if you're going to reject it and still get together??? What the hell would that add to the story?? It's giving married couples who divorce and get back together. Why are you wasting my time people???
Anyway - you know what hasn't changed? The Elriel argument. Everything is rooted in canon, logic, text (in context) and backed by SJM's own words. We don't need to come up with alternative theories to shove a square peg into a round hole.
I’m getting really tired of the antis getting mad and saying they didn’t “see” anything between Elain and Azriel.
Sweetie, it’s not our fault you haven’t set up your yearly appointment with your ophthalmologist.
Get them eyes checked 💋
I've been thinking about this interesting parallel.
At one point, Nesta made a comment about Spring Court being made for Elain and that she's love it there.
And Elain's antis immediately latched on to that comment, in addition to the whole 'black dress' comment, as some indication of foreshadowing that Elain would not only leave the Night Court, but would end up with Tamlin! (nevermind that he's been inside her sister, and he is her mate's best friend, because what is logic? (btw, the same people claim that SJM is a fated mate author. But whatever)) So that's their favorite argument--but Nesta said! but Cassian said!
But, everyone conveniently forgets that there was another comment about another sister belonging in a different place.
Mor said that Nesta belongs in the Court of Nightmares.
And not because of some superficial reasons like liking flowers and gardens, but because of her personality.
Therefore, following the antis logic, Nesta then will end up in the Court of Nightmares? With Beron? (we don't know if Mor's mother is even alive) and since most of them want Cassian dead anyway, then why not?
She'd be a Queen, a ruler of a Court. Not only that, she's actually been in Hewn City, (unlike Elain, who's never been to Spring) and she dazzled them all with her dress and her dancing, and she met Kier, unlike Elain, who never met Tamlin outside of his beast form for 3 minutes.
I just think that it's interesting how one offhand comment has assigned Elain to Spring, into the clutches of an unbalanced male who is obsessed with her sister, but another comment is treated like 'how dare Mor want to send a trauma victim to a Court where she'd be traumatized again?'
Imagine what would happen if we let the sisters themselves decide where they wanted to live?
I love how Feyre says that Elain would probably cling to Azriel to find some peace and quiet, but what we get is Azriel clinging to Elain to get some peace and quiet (Azriel beating Feyre to get to Elain to say "Happy Solstice" first kills me).
High Lady Feyre Archeron is always right, just not always in the way she expects to be.
The way it happens...all the time...
Feyre: some peace and queit probably she will cling to Az—
Azriel:*carrying her bridal style* SHE WANTS ME TO SHOW HER THE GARDEN ACTUALLY...MOVE...AND MY HANDS ARE BEAUTIFUL? THANK YOU VERY MUCH YOU BEAUTUFIL FAE BEING*blushes*
Feyre: the plants are growing nicely in the gar—
Azriel: I WILL TAKE HER THERE SHOW IT TO HER. SHE DID A VERY GOOD JOB. COME TAKE MY HAND
feyre: happy sols—
Azriel: HAPPY SOLSTICE!
imagining azriel thinking like this all the time right now making me giggle.(Im extravagating a little bit but come on it is funny)

ACOTAR 101
Feyre, Nesta, Mor, Rhys, Amren, and Cassian have all noticed something going on between Elain and Azriel. So if you’re trying to make the point Feyre is an unreliable narrator when she notices Elriel, then I guess the whole fucking IC are unreliable narrators? What would be the point of the story?? SJM deliberately wrote in scenes where characters are NOTICING Elriel through either internal thoughts or their body language because THESE ARE THE BREADCRUMBS that ELRIEL IS GOING TO HAPPEN! 📣🎉
