Henry Dimbleby says move is politically toxic but only way to achieve sustainable land use and avoid ecological breakdown
The only way to have sustainable land use in this country, and avoid ecological breakdown, is to vastly reduce consumption of meat and dairy, according to the UK governmentâs food tsar.

Whoever has looked into this abyss of torment that people bring upon animals no longer sees any light; it lies like a shadow over everything, and he can no longer rejoice impartially.
Albert Schweitzer
No matter how many times you say âthis is why people hate vegansâ, itâs not an excuse to still be knowingly buying animal products. No matter how any one vegan or plant based person acts, thatâs no excuse to harm non-human animals. Stop knowingly supporting oppression and violence when you have a choice.

Yeah, that's what happened in Sweden
Now there's a giant gap in trained specialists with nobody to replace soon-to-be retirees which leads to outsourcing of a lot of jobs, ESPECIALLY blue collar ones
Because why bother getting an education, doing an apprenticeship and working hard manual labor all your life when you can just go flip burgers right out of high school and live comfortably?
hey you dumb little bitch, i'll bet you thought no one would fact check this, didn't you?
anyways, the number of people working as employees of restaraunts has been holding steady since 2016:
[x]
and to be clear, that's not number per capita, that's the raw number. and given that the swedish population has been growing precipitously since 2016, [x] this means the number of food industry workers per capita has been going down since 2016. where exactly is this massive rush toward the restaraunt industry you claim is occurring?
but hey, let's be charitable here, maybe the shift you describe had already occurred long before the chart begins- well, then in that case, we should still see a larger percentage of the population working in the food industry than, say, the usa, where "burger flippers" are paid poverty wages?
well that should be easy enough to figure out, we've got 101,986 restaurant industry workers in sweden, against a 10,415,811 population, for 0.979% of the population working in restaurants. now compare that to 12.1 million restaraunt workers in the usa, [x] against a population of 331.9 million, giving us..... 3.645% of the population. over 3 times higher. whoops.
not to mention your claims of workers rushing toward fast food is incongruous both with the booming tech sector in sweden, [x] while your claim that younger people in sweden aren't bothering to get college degrees or other forms of tertiary education being contradicted by the reality that 46% of swedes between 25 and 34 have completed teriary education, in contrast to 32% between 45-54, or 30% between the ages of 55-64. for the record, 46% of 25-34 year olds have completed teriatry education in the usa, 43% for 45-54 year olds, and 41% for 55-64 year olds. an increase, but not as large as sweden's. so, again, more empirical proof that you're a liar.
but what really gets to me isn't that you lie, flagrantly, and expect no one to check or notice. flagrant liars are a dime a dozen. it's the reason that you choose to lie. all this dishonesty, just so you can tell everybody about how people just out of high school, who don't have the money or free time to invest in college or trade school, don't deserve to "live comfortably". not that they don't deserve to live extravagantly, not that they don't deserve to live extravagantly, no, that they don't deserve to live comfortably, that average regular working class people deserve to live in discomfort, that single moms just out of high school- and their children- deserve to live uncomfortable, unhappy lives.
i can't even fathom the kind of utter rot of the soul must have taken root within you for you to say that the people who cook the food you eat, build the houses you live in, weave the clothes you wear, etc, don't deserve to feel comfort in their lives. i'll be praying for you.
"food choices are not moral" they literally are lol? if you make the choice to buy food that was harvested by enslaved people, is depleting natural resources, destroying the environment or hurting sentient animals, then that is unethical.
since when are consumer choices free from moral judgement? like, think about what you are saying here for one second.
(and before anyone @ me, i said "make the chocie". if you do not have a choice i am not talking about you)
Honestly as a poor poc the idea that veganism is classist and racist, is itself classist and racist. It erases poor poc from the movement even though we are the majority and backbone of it and is usually said to make people feel better about eating animals and not out of genuine concern for poor poc.
The fact that veganism isnât accessible to some poor poc is an example of how the animal agriculture is so massive and oppressive that it forces itself on the vulnerable, and implying itâs a fault of vegans puts the blame on vegan civilians , many who are poor themselves, instead of massive corporations that are killing animals, the planet, and poor people/poc.
Yes, people are very quick to point out that many people cannot consume a plant-based diet due to illness, allergies, ED or a vast variety of very valid reasons not to consume a plant-based diet. But fortunately there are many other ways to be vegan that doesnt involve changing the way you eat.
However in the same vein, people tend to neglect the fact that lack of access to produce or plant-based alternatives cause a slew of problems for people as well. 60% of the world is lactose intolerant and dairy consumption has been directly linked to prostate cancer, which is the number one cancer for African American men (and transwomen and nonbinary ppl with these parts), yet dairy milk is available in public schools, gas stations and most cornerstores but plant-based alternatives are difficult to find.
Chronic illnesses that wrack up medical bills like type-2 diabetes, hypertension and high blood pressure can oftentimes be reversed with a healthy plant-based diet, yet fastfood is easily accessible in food deserts but farmerâs markets or access to healthy alternatives are not, for many people especially BIPOC who do not have the land or the means to do so. Many farmerâs market pop-ups avoid these places, they neglect these places.
Livestock runoff is more likely to reduce the air quality and water quality of low income areas that are also oftentimes primarily located in places with high BIPOC density, due to environmental racism.
Neglecting the Intersectional Vegans, and playing Devilâs advocate: you can hate on The Vegan Teacher and James Aspey, and every other douchebag vegan under the sun.
Vegans still make up less than 2% of the population.
Vegans donât decide which places get access to a vast variety of higher quality food.
But Animal Products and Animal Agriculture directly harms minorities and poor people.
AniAg is racist and classist.
AniAg is the root of these problems, not Vegans.

people on the communism site getting angry about veganism will forever be funny to me. you're mad? because i decided not to buy something due to the unethical production process? you can't be serious
nooo donât extend your principles to nonhumans whoâs bodies are being stolen in order to generate Capital for rich people, thatâs like, bourgeois or something
Studies show that approaching youth with a bystander-intervention model is actually a lot more effective for reducing sexual assault, and it is also more enthusiastically received than programs that bill themselves as anti-rape.
We can tell youth that they are basically ârapists waiting to happenâ (anti-rape initiative), or we can tell them that we know they would intervene if they saw harm happening to someone and we want to help empower them to do that (bystander intervention). The kids jump in with both feet for the latter! It was amazing to see children (and young boys in particular) excited to do this work and engage their creativity with it. Also, studies show that not only do they go on to intervene, but they also do not go on to sexually assault people themselves. Bystander intervention also takes the onus off the person being targeted to deter rape and empowers the collective to do something about it. It answers the question in the room when giggling boys are carrying an unconscious young woman up the stairs at a house party, and people are not sure how to respond and are waiting for âsomeoneâ to say or do something.

This is also, btw, how the US drastically reduced drunk driving in the US. Telling people they shouldnât drive when intoxicated made absolutely zero difference. A slogan-and-ad-campaign for âFriends donât let friends drive drunk!â changed drinking culture. Going after the bystanders is quite often the most effective thing to do in any social change.
