Headmaster's Office
Tell us about a teacher who had an influence on you.
I really admire Professor Selwyn. I only occasionally had her as a teacher when we did Astronomy in Divination over the years, but luckily she invites me to her tea circles. She's such an inspiration. I'm far away from that but when I get older I want to be this enthusiastic about the things I love as she is, this kind, this patient. I can't explain it, really. But her tea parties are always lovely, and we all have a great time with her.

27th of november | catriona & isla | you're so far away
For a few weeks now, Catriona had been quite on edge. There was still no quidditch - which didn't mean that she could just let the team become unprepared and undisciplined - there were tons of homework to worry about - and it was not getting any easier keeping up - there was choir practice and her various other activities, and to make it all unbearable - Keira was still gone. Luckily, Catriona believed in getting her hands dirty and dig in the mud for a few hours every week, with the herbology club.
She'd always had plants with her grandmother, in their summer home they'd grown all kinds of magical and non-magical things, and she'd always carried them inside to show to her grandfather while her grandmother made tea in the kitchen. That was such a long time ago.
She greeted the other members with a big smile and walked towards the middle table. She liked to talk to someone else everytime; that way she got to keep in touch with everyone. This time she decided to talk to Isla, who was already adjusting her ear muffs. A note at the entrance had told them they were going to repot the mandrakes today. "Hey, Isla", she said and waved towards the other girl in case she couldn't hear her. "How are you doing?"
Are you dating Devlin? Or is he dating someone else?
I'm not dating Devlin! Who would think that, we're just friends... right?

{flashback} i'm the fox you've been waiting for | july 17th | catriona & devlin
The night before Devlin couldn’t sleep. He was tossing and turning in his bed and checked tickets every minute. They were on his table, in terrible mess, under Catriona’s short letters, healers’ ignored prescriptions and quick sketches of different brooms – most of them were Whitecorn’s own design, - and “The Dailey Prophet” quidditch pages.
He felt like a kid, not even of Hogwarts age. He felt like a muggle kid first time shopping in the Diagon Alley or watching quidditch with his own eyes. Like a muggle kid, who discovered a large cottage built of gingerbread and cakes or found his golden ticket under the cover of the chocolate bar. Where were Devlin’s golden tickets? He sat on the bed, rubbed his face, looking at the clock, well, several minutes after midnight, and began to make mess of mess on his table. When you’re seventeen, a quidditch match seems a world to you.
The camp was overcrowded. There and everywhere wizards were nudging each other for a better place to put a tent and debating very loudly about dress code. “Merlin’s beard!” the respectable wizard in a pointed hat exclaimed when Devlin was passing by, “And not Merlin himself makes me wear muggle… muggle… rags!” Whitehorn chuckled. He himself dressed today as a good muggle boy just leaving a dusty classroom of his college. A bit old-fashioned and boring, as it seemed to Devlin, but still dashing.
“Captain” Devlin jokingly saluted Catriona and hid his palms in trousers’ pockets, “Sorry, I am late. Don’t be so grumpy, you’ll have the best seat.”
Devlin waved his arm at huge Pride of Portee posters just above their heads. The Ministry worker asked for their tickets in tedious, dull voice, but Whitehorn only grimaced and pull Catriona up the stairs.
“My old man thinks you’re my girlfriend. Silly, isn’t it?” he said after catching his breath and gave the girl a flick.
Finally, he was there. A stone the size of a quaffle dropped from Catriona's heart. They wouldn't miss the game. Everything would be alright. "There you are!", she exclaimed, smiling widely. Don't be too excited, she heard a voice, some woman authority's, like McGonagall's or her aunt Elsa's, but this was only Devlin, wasn't it? There was no reason not to be excited. "The best seat? Oh, Merlin. Do I even wanna know how you managed to get that?"
The passed the ministry workers and went up the stairs. Devlin held her hand to guide the way. Catriona tried to see everything at once, moving her head from side to side. "Isn't it wonderful?", she said, pointing around. Ideal weather for quidditch, and people were beginning to crowd the stadium. The two team's sides were beginning to form opposite camps. She rubbed her hands against one another in anticipation.
She peered at Devlin from the side, but he seemed to mean it as a joke, so she decided to play along. "Really?", she responded. "Why would he think that?" She let out a giggle that could cut through the entire Hogwarts' Choir. He was hopefully joking - the game was about to start, and she didn't want to miss any of it. And she had a feeling that holding Devlin's hand would probably distract her quite.
"Oh look!", she exclaimed, fishing for an omnicular next to her seat - how precious they were, those VIP seats! - to get a better view. "There they are!"
A little bit of fairy dust//Lucinda&Open//31st October.
Lucinda's eyes widened happily, and even began to get wider when she started to talk. "Yes! That would he brilliant! Pumpkin cupcakes would be lovely. I've ate in the library before, it's very nice if it's raining outside, I suppose the Thestrals are behind all that." She smiled and shyly looked down at her little feet on the stone ground, hugging her book close to her chest as if someone could come and take it away from her. Lucinda's smile widened. "You don't need to give me anything in return, I like helping people, I like helping others than helping myself."
Her eyes slowly looked back up at Catriona, a flush still clear on her porcelain cheeks. "When would you like me to tutor you? I suppose it can't be on the weekend, because you're probably with your friends." Her smile faltered slightly into a little frown, making her look so innocent and childlike. "B-But if you did want to give it back to me somehow, you could maybe give me a lesson on Quidditch, I am not really the sporting type."
Catriona resolved to look up whether Thestrals actually had powers to make it rain outside, but she smiled widely at Lucinda either way. She liked this girl, somehow, there was something pure and kind about her. "Are you sure? Well, you can always tell me if you want something, after all." She smirked. "I can tell you're going to be a good teacher."
She thought about it for a split second... it was true, she had a lot of reunions and stuff with her friends going on, but she should probably prioritize studying over that. "Whenever you have time. If on the weekends work for you, that's totally fine with me! I want to get better at potions, after all." She winked. When Lucinda mentioned quidditch, Catriona felt her heart jump immediately. "That would be lovely, of course! You'll see, you'll like it - who doesn't? It's heavenly, I promise you, and we can get you a broom and practice flying and playing with the quaffle-" She grabbed Lucinda's arm excitedly. "You'll love it."
over my dead body! [ 26 october 1961, devlin and alastar - crashed by catriona ]
Al rolled his eyes and shoved his friend off of him. “Piss off, Dev,” he said, putting on a face that looked like he found the situation as funny as everyone else did while communicating a venomous anger through his eyes. Of course he was mad. He could take a joke (Devlin in particular was known to mock everyone, the arse) but to do so front of his teammates was annoying, to put it delicately. Though Dev wasn’t exactly the type to be sensitive to that sort of thing. Or the type to respect boundaries. Or the type to shut up, ever.
For his own sake, he decided to play along. “Besides,” he straightened his cloak, “if you tell them the story, they won’t ever want to play again.” With the wooden end of his broomstick, Al gestured to the open, silent, shrouded pitch. His voice fell quiet and he looked over at a group of fifth years, who had just joined the team a few weeks ago. “They tell you what happened in the mist in seventh year. This dummy let it slip-” an accusing glance at Devlin- “but you kids aren’t supposed to know about it. They build you all up on the fun of the game and friendship and team spirit and all that so you don’t feel like you can quit after you find out. Right guys?” The other seventh years nodded in agreement. One whispered something to a sixth year, making her shudder. Oh, good. This was working out well. “A mist like this doesn’t come very often, and what comes with it is much worse.” Al patted Devlin on the back with unnecessary force, making him cough loudly. “So no more trysts with the Gryffindor girls, Dev, unless you want your filthy mind rotted and your pretty face eaten off.” The seventh years laughed (“Thank god,” Al thought, “I got the clever house”) but the sixth and fifth years weren’t sure how to react. A few laughed nervously while the others cringed. Al smiled. This wasn’t exactly how he intended his morning to go, but it was probably just as fun as playing quidditch. Playing with minds, he found, was much more satisfying than playing with brooms.
One simple truth about Catriona was that she rarely ever got mad at anyone about anything. It was just not her nature. But when she had returned from breakfast a few minutes ago, her shoulders slump and heavy - no quidditch practice felt like christmas was cancelled - she had looked out of the window next to her bed in the Gryffindor tower - and there was the Slytherin Quidditch Team, all rounded up around the announcement board, their green scarves moving in the wind.
It was probably nothing, but still - hadn't she talked to Devlin and Alastar about this just the other day? Was the ban lifted? They could have told her, at least, not only was she Gryffindor Captain, she was also their friend. So she waved goodbye to the other Gryffindor girls who were getting their things to study in the common room - or perhaps not study so much as have a nice morning - put her hair up into a loose ponytail and mader way towards the pitch.
From afar, she could already hear the Slytherins discussing vividly, and oh - there was Devlin as well! There must definitely be some news. Maybe everything was alright again - she squinted, but the mist was still there. She waved at everyone and smiled as she bounced on her toes. "What's going on - is the ban lifted finally?" She eyed Alastar, who was looking rather angry. Hopefully everything was alright. "You are not using the pitch without permission, Al, are you?" It was meant as a joke, but by the look on his face, he didn't take it as one.

A little bit of fairy dust//Lucinda&Open//31st October.
Lucinda brushed herself off, standing up as though nothing had every happened, but the laughter still didn’t die down in the hall. “I’m alright, I’m quite the clumsy one, I do this a lot. I’m used to it.” She smiled brightly, although her cheeks were still flushed red from embarrassment. “You know that you said you wasn’t too good at potions?” Lucinda started to suggest, raising her head. “I could tutor you if you’d like. I can help you improve after school in Slughorn’s classroom. He doesn’t mind me using it when I’m helping someone.”
"You don’t have to come along of course, it’s completely up to you but if you do I’ll help you as much as I can with what you’re stuck on. I usually go straight there after school and do some intervention and then go to the library for the rest of the night. Of course, you don’t have to come with me to the library." Lucinda’s voice became more quiet with shyness. "It will be nice to have some company that won’t make fun of me."
Lucinda blushed heavily. Catriona smiled reassuringly. She could imagine how Lucinda felt, and it made her want to hug the other girl. "Really?" Her eyes widened at Lucinda's suggestion. "You would do that?" She smiled widely. "Oh, that's so nice of you - I mean - yes, that would be fantastic... But only if it doesn't bother you to much. I don't know what I could give you in return - if you wanted, I could of course compensate you?"
As Lucinda went on, Catriona began to feel even more for her. What it must be like, so lonely? She couldn't even imagine, she'd never been without friends herself. Nobody should be. So she touched Lucinda's shoulder and smiled at her. "I would love to come with you to the library! You'll have to show me around though, I don't quite know my way around there..." It was actually embarrassing to admit, but maybe it would make Lucinda feel better, and that was worth it. "We can make it a study day, it will be fun!" She thought about it. "I'm going to bring pumpkin cupcakes, okay? I mean, we can't eat them in the library, probably... But maybe we can take a break and eat them outside? If the weather is good."
ooc;
sorry for having been inactive, i know i owe tooons of starters and replies, i'm going to start doing them now :) happy new year's!
A little bit of fairy dust//Lucinda&Open//31st October.
Lucinda nodded, and then shook her head. “Oh, no, I’m not that clever. But I do spend a fair amount of my time in the library, I have nothing else to do. I am in the after school potions society, I do like potions. I like transfiguration too because I like my animagus form. But I do go and feed the baby Thestrals because I don’t like them going hungry when they’re only small.” She answered, her voice drifting as the sentence progressed, her eyes in a land other than here. “It’s very chilling whilst walking through the halls. I really do not like it when it’s dark.”
As her eyes fell upon the doors of the Great Hall, a rare frown tugged at her features. “I wish you very good luck in the choir. I hope it all goes well with your frog. He’s very nice. I like his colour. Very frog-like.” She smiled proudly before skipping off into the hall, though, tripping over something of the ground and falling over, front first. The students currently in the hall laughed, making Lucinda feel humiliated as she attempted to scramble to her feet unsuccessfully.
Catriona was about to suggest to her that she could join a few more clubs to meet other people, but held back. Lucinda did seem like she was content with her life, in a way, and she didn't want to push her out of her comfort zone just yet. "After potions society? Wow, that's impressive! I have to admit I am rather bad at potions, I might even fail the class this year...", she admitted sadly, but pushed the thought away quickly.
"Thank you! We practiced so much for this, so all should go well. And with all the frogs present now, what could go wrong?" She winked. In that moment Lucinda stumbled over something and fell to the ground. Catriona almost let the frog fall when she crouched down to help her up. Lucinda looked beyond embarrassed. "Are you okay? Don't listen to them, they just have nothing better to do." She helped her up and patted her shoulder. "Did you hurt yourself?"
A little bit of fairy dust//Lucinda&Open//31st October.
Lucinda’s head tilted to the side slightly, she was never good at making people want to be her friend. She scared them away with her madness most of the time. “I like the forest, I find it very peaceful, although the Whomping Willow is nothing but a danger to all of us.” She smiled dreamily, her teeth biting on her lip ever so slightly.
Tilting her head back again, she started to go on about the Thestrals. “The Thestrals aren’t scary at all. They are very misunderstood creatures and I find them very fascinating. I feed them when I have the chance, I like looking after the baby ones.” Her voice said excitedly, clasping both of her hands together around her book. “I don’t like all this Halloween business though, it gives me the creeps. It scares the unicorns too. That’s why they can’t be found in cold Octobers. I heard pygmypuffs sing on Boxing Day!”
Catriona didn't exactly find the Forbidden Forest 'peaceful', but well, everyone was entitled to their opinion. The Thestrals had always scared her - she couldn't see them, but they ate raw meat and they were just... creepy and scary. Even the small ones ate raw meat - Catriona would have rather sat in detention for weeks than even touch one. Her grandmother had told her that they were a bringer of death - she didn't understand why the school would keep them on the grounds anyway.
She thought of the pumpkins and the mist and all those weird things going on and shivered - then she thought of Keira, and everything just went really cold. "Yeah", she said vaguely. "It's... eerie, isn't it?"
As they walked on, she hoped for a change of subject. "So, do you spend a lot of time in the library, Lucinda?", she asked the other girl. "You must be very smart, then..."
I think everyone’s dream is to be an actress, but I never really thought it was going to happen. Now that it’s happening, it’s incredible. I do a lot of other things, too. I’m not stuck in this little world. I’m aware that we’re in the middle of an economic crisis in the U.S. There’s a lot going on in the world, and I’m really happy and excited about what I have and I don’t take it for granted. I’m pretty lucky.

A little bit of fairy dust//Lucinda&Open//31st October.
Lucinda's porcelain body continued to sway dreamily, her eyes were full or constant happiness. "I'm Lucinda." She replied, holding her book tightly, again. "And I'm sure unicorns sing. They're magical, aren't they? I love unicorns. I find them very fascinating. I read lots of books on them and hypogryffs, though Hypogryffs aren't the friendliest of creatures at times." Lucinda said, almost entirely in one breath. She didn't want to mess up making friends as she'd done in the past.
Reaching up to brush a stray strand of hair out of face, she spoke again. "I like going into the forest and looking for the unicorns, though I found centaurs. They're nice too. I feed the Thestrals sometimes. I will find unicorns someday. I'll keep looking until I do."
The more Lucinda talked and the more Catriona found her eyebrows moving upwards towards the ceiling, the more determined she was not to just dismiss this girl. "Oh, then you're a unicorn expert", she admitted, "I'm sure you know better than I am, I get terribly distracted with studying..." When Lucinda mentioned hippogriffs again, Catriona of course had to remember that incident in fourth year when someone had insulted the hippogriff and it had destroyed most of Professor Kettleburn's garden work.
"You go into the forest?", Catriona echoed, mildly shocked, and accidentally squeezed the frog in her hand. It reacted with a protesting croak. This girl was turning out to be more and more of a surprise. If she survived the Forbidden Forest, surely one didn't have to worry about her social life at Hogwarts. "But it's forbidden and - I mean - aren't you scared?? And don't you find the Thestrals... you know... eerie?" She bit herself on the tongue. She was being rude. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to be invasive."
