this is Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo. it’s a really weird novel about a man going to get a haircut that’s also a pretty explicit criticism of the 1%.

the main character is a multimillionaire who’s so fixated on money and materialism that he’s basically forgotten how to be a normal human being and connect with people. that conversation above is him talking to his new wife. at one point, he even says something like, “this is good. we are having a conversation. this is what people do.”

FYI the IRS extended tax filing until May 17th. it's on the IRS website which i can't link to in a question here.

oh, yes, you can file late, I’m aware-- but-- if you owe tax, you have to pay what you estimate you’ll owe by 4/15, and if you don’t pay enough, you will then owe interest or a penalty or I’m not sure how much, you’d better look it up. 😓

So, PSA: If you think you’ll owe taxes, you’d better make an estimated payment by 4/15. Or you’ll be paying a late penalty.

Another PSA: in literally any year whether the IRS offers it or not, you are always free to file for an extension, at which time you will have until 7/1 to file your taxes, but as in this case, you still must pay what you estimate you will owe, and if you’re wrong, you’ll owe interest.

So what they’ve done by extending the filing deadline is a big fat nothing, you can always file late if you ask for an extension, and they will always charge you interest if you don’t pay in time, including now!

I love Star Trek cause on one hand the very basis of these shows builds on being political and asking ethical questions, episodes about 'what makes an individual with rights', 'how stable is our moral philosophy under the pressures of war' etc
