ChapShaw 1x02 (âFind the Gapâ Meta):
âMax Chapman has been un-hittable todayâ
Max is watching the menâs baseball game âthe Screwsâ writing in her notebook. Carson is also the only character (besides Clances sketch book) that takes notes on baseball.
Dove Porter follows up in another scene by saying: âNow the first things pitcher has to learn is how to look into someone eye and how to read them. Are they scared? Are they thinking about their girlfriend?â (Carson shakes her head in the background, which can be foreshadowing to Greta orâŚ)
We just came off a scene with Max and the peaches are now getting coached my a former pitcher. Carson says in a later episode that âMax is the best pitcher sheâs ever played withâ, which includes Dove because he had to pitch to her and she hit it.
When Carson is dragged by Max to a childhood baseball field (connected to her father), that Carsonâs asks about. Carson also asked, âWhy did you choose me?â. I think this reason wouldâve been explored more in later seasons but Max just gives a vague answer about herself. âI just wanted to see if I could do it.â
There is a shot of 2 peaches playing/having a catch in the front yard. One is wearing a dressâŚ.the other is wearing pants. And they both have the same matching color schemes. The words âCarson. Telephoneâ is on V.OâŚforeshadowing?????
Shirley talks to Carson in the middle of the night and Carson tells her that she âfeels like sheâs supposed to be thereâ and the same day she by chance runs into Max. Sheâs the reason that Max is able to get her crabs for Clance so that Clance can âmake a home and make it specialâ.
On the window it says thereâs a sale on âcrabs and peachesâ.
Clance pointing out the Rockford peaches sign to Max and her trying not to look at it or be upset by it.
Also, Carson saying that she feels like sheâs supposed to be in Maxâs hometown on a team that Max felt like she was meant to be on. But their circumstances and reality kept them apart.
Greta saying âwhen she really wants something it never really goes rightâ and Carson says she understands. In 1x06, when Max comes back Carson admits she didnât think she was ever going to see max again and starts to overcompensate.
We end the episode with max meeting up for an âafter hours appointmentâ at the salon and itâs where she hooks up with the woman sheâs been with since she was 17. I wonder if we wouldâve seen more of this public and private life parallel with Esther in the coming season and how thereâs more to meet the eye.
I miss a league of their own đ

Carson envisioned herself in a slowburn romance and found herself in one 24 hours laterâŚwelcome back Elizabeth and Darcy

Max Chapman and her quiet obsession with the romantic availability of Carson Shaw
Coincidentally, Max was sneaking around with a married woman already and it didnât end great. Max told Carson that she had never been in love with her though, it was only about their bodies (I think this is also a tie-in to Carsonâs situation but thatâs for later).
After Max breaks it off with Carson, she makes the comment âwhy do I keep doing this to myself?â And goes back home to Clance. Max makes the comment about âbeing tired of wanting things she canât haveâ but sheâs associating it with staying away from baseball.
Baseball, the reason Max tells Carson is why she picked/choose Carson in the first place because she âwanted to prove something to herselfâ.
So why is she so obsessed with the idea/reality of Carsonâs relationship status and how sheâs viewing her romantic openness. Itâs not like Max goes back to the married woman, she wasnât in love and she wasnât looking for an excuse. She needed that plot line to further drive home why she didnât make a move and the barrier of Carson being entangled showed max a heart-breaking situation that she didnât want to repeat again.
Max Chapman and her quiet obsession with the romantic availability of Carson Shaw
Carson Shaw who had one best friend growing up and thought thatâs all love needed to survive. Carson Shaw who we never learned her maiden name but we know that she was given a unisex name. Carson Shaw who was told that the only good thing that she could contribute was a pie. Carson Shaw who brought a pie to church every Sunday because she didnât have kids to show so she had to do âsomething rightâ.
She started making pies after her mother left, it was the only thing that she remembered about her mother. The one thing that her mother liked and her father loved. She wanted to be connected, even if her older sister Megan thought she was beating a dead horse. Holding onto a ghost. But Carson could do it. Pies can start a conversation. Pie and coffee is even better. They show skill, some version of âhomemakingâ, that sheâs capable of âwifely dutiesâ.
Carson Shaw who runs to baseball, forgets her pies, leaves her duties. Carson Shaw who is in foreign territory and has no one to lean on, not even her annoyed sister who is one of the last people she has. Carson Shaw who tries to bake for Dove Porter because thatâs how people give her attention and sheâs good at it. Love, attention, care and conversation through food. Carson Shaw whoâs always been made fun off, who continues to get made fun of by the people close to her and her coping skills.
Carson Shaw who brought a pie to Max Chapman and she wasnât ridiculed. Max Chapman who had been asking the universe for a pie since the pilot episode, because it shows good manners. Max Chapman who gave her the time and conversation. Who didnât make fun of her. Who recognized and appreciated the gesture. It worked. Carson Shaw, who never seen her coping pies work before, but it worked on Max Chapman. It worked with her soulmate and maybe thatâs enough.

@mai-komagata I loved these two so forking much đOTP
Greta's letter to Carson in 1x07
From Desta Tedros Reff (one of the writers and executive producer)
Not the most important part of this but I love all Max/Carson parallels: "I'm not a good dancer?" đ
Carson and Maxâs first dance together and itâs terrible but itâs them. They get to be strange together because theyâre not alone anymore. Truly Gelphie vibes.
ChapShaw (Episode 1):
Carson and Max both having train scenes, they sit on opposite sides of the train and in opposite seats, Carson likes the window seat, Max likes the outside one
Max is the first to bring up California and the concept of âintegrationâ. She wants to play in the leagues, yes, but not specifically the Negro Leagues. She wants to play with white players like Carson but isnât allowed. The subtext of Max wanting to bridge their legal gap
Greta cuts Carsonâs hair without consent but itâs suppose to be an intimate act. Later we are shown that Max is the inheritor of a hair & nail salon. I wonder where they wouldâve headed with this relationship later in the series
Carson passes by The Chapman salon on the peaches bus
Carson seeing Maxâs name on a building and being the only/first white customer to break the barrier. To INTEGRATE. Carson once again showing up in Maxâs space, trying to weave her way even more into Maxâs life and narrative. Also, Carson finding a way to weasel her way into every space where Max works because she canât find a platonic way to ask to see Maxâs home.
Carson asking for Max to cut her hair specifically.
Max uses a pedicure to have sexual subtext with the woman sheâs been sleeping with since 17.
Max also being there for Carsonâs first sexual experience with a woman. Sheâs always been apart of Carsonâs narrative romantic life. She canât help herself.
Max says âHi, again.â
Again??? Is she talking about when she saw Carson at the ballpark? Or when she saw Carson at the first of the bar? Or when she saw Carson get kissed just minutes before? THE INVISIBLE STRING!!
Did Max remember Carson even though she had changed her hair by this point? Carson remembered Max.
Carson asked who Max was and the universe answered.
missing the rockford peaches like a close personal friend

Max is Carsonâs peace and vice versa
Max and Carson being each other safe spaces. Carson can hear all the negative voice in her head until she goes to Max and she can finally hear herself think. Max has the yips and is insecure until Carson helps her face her problems and give her courage.
Max makes a comment about how Carson is the only one she can throw for and the noise in her head stops. They are each others peace. They seek each other out when theyâre overwhelmed and overstimulated. They need each other to cope. Nobody else can give them the peace they require in their lives.
Them married would be invincible.
rest in peace a league of their own (2022) you would have loved and deserved the same treatment the gay ice hockey show is getting
