whipping girl reading thread(?)
iâm sick and canât even sit up to read and iâm tired of scrolling so iâve decided itâs time to download a pdf of Whipping Girl and make myself even more miserable than my sickness is making me already. normally i write in books and underline important parts but i donât know how to do that with a pdf on mobile, so iâll reblog this through my side blog @carmillafem (to not clog up my main blog) with quotes and my responses to them. be warned: these thoughts and responses will not be polished statements like most of my blog. ordinarily, theyâre intended only for my own eyes. i just wanted to share this experience w anyone who voted towards me reading this so we suffer in solidarity to some degree.
so far iâm trying so hard to not be judgmental but iâve seen as chapter titles: âboygasms and girlgasmsâ, âcrossdressing: demystifying femininity and rethinking male privilegeâ and âputting the feminine back into feminismâ someone pray for me
INTRODUCTION
I do not believe that we are discriminated against in the same ways and for the exact same reasons. I have found that the ways people reacted to me back when I identified as a mostly closeted male crossdresser, or as a bigendered queer boy, were very different from one another and yet again different from the way people react to me now that I am an out transsexual woman. The focus on âtransgenderâ as a one-size-fits-all category for those who âtransgress binary gender normsâ has inadvertently erased the struggles faced by those of us who lie at the intersection of multiple forms of gender-based prejudice.â
agree - lumping all issues into one is not ideal for addressing individual struggles. but thereâs a much bigger difference between homosexuality and transsexuality than there is between âbigenderâ and transgender. so why are we so upset when homosexuals insist upon their own spaces, their own organisations, and focusing on LGB without the T? focusing on our niche rather than putting everything under a âqueer umbrellaâ??
âas an out transsexual woman, I find that those who wish to ridicule or dismiss me do not simply take me to task for the fact that I fail to conform to gender normsâinstead, more often than not, they mock my femininity.â
interesting. i wonât argue with your experience (yet) but i wanted to note this
non-trans feminists who have written about us in the past have usually based their theses upon the assumption that we are really âmenâ (not women), and that our physical transitions to female and our expressions of femininity represent an appropriation of female culture, symbolism, and bodies. Besides being disrespectful of the fact that we identify, live, and are treated by the world as women, such flawed approaches have overlooked an important opportunity to examine far more relevant issues: the ways in which traditional sexism shapes popular assumptions about transsexual women and why so many people in our society feel threatened by the existence of âmen who choose to become women.â
again, baseline twaw without explanation besides âwe identify, life and are treated as suchâ. we are only âthreatenedâ because you threaten us regularly, outside of that, we donât think you are women. you think thatâs âdisrespectfulâ, but we donât owe you respect just because you love femininity, a weapon designed to teach women to be tools for men. also: interesting how this book immediately, off the bat, chooses non-complicit feminists as the enemy, rather than men who actually hurt trans people.
The fact that we identify and live as women, despite being born male and having inherited male privilege, challenges those in our society who wish to glorify maleness and masculinity, as well as those who frame the struggles faced by other women and queers solely in terms of male and heterosexual privilege.
radfems certainly donât glorify maleness and masculinity, so i suppose weâre in the second category, saying female struggles are only due to male privilege?
Today, while it is generally considered to be offensive or prejudiced to openly discriminate against someone for being female, discriminating against someoneâs femininity is still considered fair game. The idea that masculinity is strong, tough, and natural while femininity isweak, vulnerable, and artificial continues to proliferate even among people who believe that women and men are equals. And in a world where femininity is so regularly dismissed, perhaps no form of gendered expression is considered more artificial and more suspect than male and transgender expressions of femininity.
i canât wait to hear a definition of femininity, because what i know of it, itâs gender stereotypes put on women such as long hair, nails, makeup, dresses, and personality-wise friendly, caring, bubbly etc. i donât always pick an issue with femininity specifically, but i think it is fair game to say if you sacrifice convenience for beauty standards, your own needs for otherâs interest, etc then you arenât making the most ideal choices. same way too much masculinity is bad, too much femininity is harmful to the self. by many peopleâs standards, femininity is inherently âweak, vulnerable and artificialâ. again, iâd like to know what the author considers âfeminineâ
[people] who are feminine, whether they be female, male, and/or transgender, are almost universally demeaned compared with their masculine counterparts
i wouldnât say masculine women cop it less difficult than gender-conforming women âuniversallyâ or in general. sure, working in construction or engineering, a masculine woman may be more respected than a feminine woman, but in less masculine professions/spaces, gender conforming women absolutely have better treatment than gnc.
Even many feminists buy into traditionally sexist notions about femininityâthat it is artificial, contrived, and frivolous;
you talk about femininity as if itâs some natural state, not a cultural set of rules invented by patriarchy.
What I hope to show in this book is that the real ruse being played is not by those of us who happen to be feminine, but rather by those who place inferior meanings onto femininity. The idea that femininity is subordinate to masculinity dismisses women as a whole and shapes virtually all popular myths and stereotypes about trans women.
âwomen as a wholeâ are effected by criticism of femininity - sort of like (apologies for the rather intense metaphor, i know) saying âcriticising being greedy is bad, it hurts jews as a whole! itâs okay to be greedy!â or maybe. jews arenât greedy. and women arenât inherently feminine, but are socialised to be such. maybe thereâs something more complex here than âmost women are feminine so femininity = woman, and criticism of femininity = sexismâ
I argue that certain aspects of femininity (as well as masculinity) are natural and can both precede socialization and supersede biological sex.
iâm sure fucking hoping youâve got a source to back this idea up, because iâve got a million to the contrary. note to reader: if ur curious, just read Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine. it pretty much debunks this whole concept, or at the very least demonstrates that itâs not proven enough to take as fact considering the implications about and consequences for women if you do so.
No form of gender equity can ever truly be achieved until we first work to empower femininity itself.
oh okay so this is the basis of âempowermentâ feminism too. two birds with one stone i suppose. also, for anyone reading, apologies if youâre saying âduh!! everyone knows Whipping girl focuses onâŚâ, i do prefer going into books blind. i can form my own opinion on what the authorâs words mean before someone can tell me âno no no they ACTUALLY mean [this] and itâs totally feminist, despite how it sounds!!â. iâll listen to that after. i get this from law. interpret words with their plain meaning before looking to external sources for interpretation.
Some readers may be transsexual themselves, or may be very active in the transgender community, but may not be tuned in to the many discourses about gender and transsexuality that exist in academia, clinical settings, feminism, or queer politics. Others may take an interest in this book from a womenâs, queer, or gender studies perspective, being familiar with what non-trans academics have had to say about trans people, but without ever having been exposed to a transsexual womanâs take on these manydialogues and debates. Still others may be completely new to the subject, having picked up the book because they want to learn more about transsexuality, how to be a trans ally, or because they have a particular interest in the subjects of femininity and/or sexism.
funny how GC books often start with âi really hope someone who disagrees with me is reading this. this book is practically written for people who donât agree with me. i want to have a discussionâ meanwhile this book doesnât even consider for a moment someone who disagrees could be an audience, only people who agree or are neutral on the topic.
gender essentialists (who believe that women and men represent two mutually exclusive categories, each born with certain inherent, nonoverlapping traits) and social constructionists (who believe that gender differences are primarily or exclusively the result of socialization and binary gender norms).
at least we show some understanding of what gender essentialism is. now letâs see if we can use the word properly when describing different ideologies. anyways iâm definitely a social constructionist and i have plenty of sources (many studies done after this book was written) to support the idea. this book is pretty much in direct competition with Delusions of Gender so far, sort of a pro-trans version, except without the sourcing of anything.
In chapter 19, âPutting the Feminine Back into Feminism,â I make the case that feminist activism and theory would be best served by working to empower and embrace femininity, rather than eschewing or deriding it, as it often has in the past. Such an approach would allow feminism to both incorporate transgender perspectives and reach out to the countless feminine-identified women who have felt alienated by the movement in the past.
(big sigh) still waiting (hoping) for a definition of femininity which isnât just patriarchal desires of + rules for women which assist patriarchy to easily control them. please stop talking about it like people are born either feminine or masculine. iâm begging at least for a source or something.

Reminder that the amount of rapists and sex offenders that are never convicted has nothing to do with there not being enough evidence and everything to do with the system not caring.
Rape was a property offence, thatâs the only reason it was made a crime. Itâs damage to another manâs property (daughter or wife). It, and sexual assault have some kind of false or pseudo-insignificant place in law now Itâs only reason for being made criminal is no longer relevant. Thatâs my theory as to why no one cares.
No other crime is neglected like rape and sexual assault is. the criminal system in a sense has simply given up on doing anything about it, and thatâs why rapists and sex offender roam politics and policing.
Many institutions, like my high school, go as far as to defend the offender. The rapist at my school was yelled at by principles for hours, but only because he got caught again. All of their effort was put into silencing victims and silencing any discussion of it - they gave him an at-home suspension for his own safety. No other reason. I was suspended for equally as long, only because i talked publicly about it and told women to avoid him because the school wasnât doing anything to protect them from him. He had sexually offended 9 girls, and his first victim was my best friend. She also went to the police, and despite overwhelming evidence: him confessing that heâs done it, screenshots of him harassing her, saying âdid you like it when i groped youâ her saying ânoâ him saying âgood.â - despite all that, all the police did was dissuade her from making a report.
Itâs not that the crime is somehow wildly different from all other crime, itâs that every man in power has guilt from whatever theyâve done, and theyâll do everything in their power to protect a man they think is like them. Itâs that the system, the men in it, donât care at best.
Itâs more than that every woman knows a woman, every woman knows a story. every woman witnessed a story, just like these.
this but it isn't guilt. it's smugness they got away with it before and insurance they will again in the future.
Iâm jewish, literally never touch my blog again you antisemite freak. Iâm not gonna let you forget, regardless of you deleting the posts. Israeli women are women, and are human, they donât deserve rape and torture. Go watch a documentary or some shit on the holocaust bc ur lack of education is embarrassing. Jewish people will not let the world forget the holocaust and Iâm not letting you run away from these posts.
you need to ask yourself why you're not actively addressing the antisemitism within our community and then you need to change and act
radblr this shit should be SO alarming to all of you.
WHY DO YOU ALL HATE JEWS SO MUCH AND STILL ACT LIKE YOU DONT HOLY SHIT JUST OWN IT AND FUCK OFF
denying the rapes against israeli jewish women and then saying you're suspicious of people blathering about "antisemitism" is really fucking Something to witness.
wow! just wow!
i have nothing kind to say to you, so i am just going to keep updating this post.
scheduling reblogs of this for maybe the next day or two. everyone should get to see her denying rapes and calling a woman an idiot for thinking antisemitism is a relevant oppression in 2024.
literally this june a 12 year old jewish girl was raped by 2 boys for being jewish. on october 7th countless women were murdered and raped for being jewish. "some bad stuff happened to you in the distant passed"
IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN A CENTURY SINCE NUMEROUS COUNTRIES WORKED TOGETHER TO TRY TO ERADICATE US.

Bruh what the fuck
i will never understand why you would even WANT to claim any feminist label if you can think about the systematic rape of a subcategory of women and go "oh well whatever lol"
B..but the government is doing bad.. bad women who may or may not agree with their government behavior get punished /sarcasm
Itâs almost like women are always collateral and thereâs always an acceptable target for misogyny
Wow she was a âradfem.â God damn. Fuck her and anyone who thinks like this.
while weâre outing antisemites on radblr hereâs an actual screenshot from @hyperdemona saying that Jewish people deserve another genocide because of the Israeli governmentâs actions. Screenshot taken on February 15th 2024.
She (vvitchscvm) also made and deleted some comments on one of my posts laughing and telling me I have no friends and i should kms or something - btw sheâs deleted all these posts now and I imagine she thinks itâs all just going to go away. Personally, I donât plan on letting her forget about it any time soon.
This is so unbelievably disturbing, disgusting and horrific to see within the radfem community. In a way, Iâm almost glad she came out and said all this, so now i never have to treat this raging antisemite with respect again.
The death of 1.5 million children is not âsome bad stuffâ - as I said on my other blog, I want you to imagine every single child from your local primary school, throwing up, gasping for air, starved, shot. Every single student, imagine their young faces. Now (assuming you live in the US and average primary school has 450~ children), times that pile of bodies by three thousand. And thatâs only the jewish children that died. Thereâs footage of them moving piles of bodies using vehicle machinery.
Iâm fucking embarrassed by our generation atp, we are the largest generation of holocaust deniers, and even those who arenât outright denying are still fucking sickening in their downplaying of it, like this woman.
Antisemitism has been around for centuries, millenia, even, and she thinks some 70 years after an almost successful entire wipe of the jewish population, itâs just going to fade off and disappear. No generational trauma, no lasting impact. Now itâs just the âdistant pastâ. This isnât just reckless ignorance, itâs something beyond that, and itâs honestly horrific to witness.
Wow! I wonder what the nazis were thinking when they were committing the atrocities? Perhaps, that they donât have a single thing in common with these people. That they arenât even human. She claims antisemitism isnât real and in the same breath says she doesnât care what happens to jewish people, whether thatâs rape or murder or torture, itâs irrelevant, because theyâve got nothing in common.
Sheâs not a fucking feminist, and she never has been. These are innocent women and children, sheâs implying they are somehow inhuman because of the country they are born in. Itâs unbelievably basic feminist thinking to realise men rape when given the opportunity, and regardless of circumstance, itâs always bad. No feminist would ever believe some women deserve to be raped, or some men deserve to rape some women.
i hope âEnjoy the blocklist, edgelordâ can be immortalised bc thatâs the funniest shit i ever read. Will do!

Wtf is that trigger warning?? Trigger warning for what, frank discussions of reality? Since when is that "blackpill feminism"? OP, you need a reality check
You realise some people donât want to open tumblr and be hit depressing, miserable and pointless content, right? just whining about how awful life is and how itâs all hopeless? They want to relax or have fun or look at fandom content. Thereâs nothing hopeful or motivational about this post, itâs just wallowing in negativity, and i understand that some people donât want to see that, occasionally including myself. âBlackpillâ means exactly that, nihilistic, pessimistic hopelessness. Idk if you just love surrounding urself with it 24/7, maybe you do considering ur seemingly constant negativity, complaining about the use of three words in a whole post, not commenting on a single other aspect, but normal people donât want that.
I donât put a warning on content that has a cause or is a call for action, or an in-depth discussion on feminism, but this shit is just depressing. I generally avoid this kind of content, because itâs got very little purpose compared to other posts. Itâs hardly educational, not productive, thereâs no action to take, the only option is to get upset about it. Itâs miserable.
Hereâs reality: Not everyone wants to be depressed all the time, and if you force people to consume depressing content constantly, with no hope or action to take, they r gonna give up, lay down and die or commit suicide, and that does fucking nothing to help the feminist cause.
Nah, you misunderstood me. "Blackpill feminism" is a term used to dismiss real actual issues, such as the one in this post, as ~negativity~ and I would be sincerely surprised if you didn't know that. Yes, i did read the whole post, and it's very serious business, which is why i object to this serious content being reduced to ~blackpill feminism.~ you wanna call it depressing, triggering, upsetting, call it that, but the term you chose is one that's very often used to silence and minimize women who are simply straightforward about the realities of male violence and male oppression.
Great job with the YA protagonist speech, though! I'm sure that took a lot of practice, just like you must have done a lot of gymnastics to master jumping to so many conclusions about the personality of a woman you barely know. I'm a ball of sunshine, as it so happens, I just also don't believe in adopting reductive language for important, serious conversations; and I was deeply surprised to see a feminist self-depreciating her own content with such a reductive label. Yeah, it sucks and it's depressing, but it's reality, and writing off real-world facts and statistics as ~black pill feminism~ doesn't do anything but lend credence to the people who use the term to pooh-pooh women with real issues as ~crazy man-haters.~
sorry can you.. tell me where i said âblackpill feminismâ? because i didnât. it was âblackpill feminist contentâ. as in, miserable, depressing and pessimistic feminist content.
Itâs still absurd that you want to complain about nothing but three words you donât like instead of thinking about the rest of the post, clearly you just want to be negative. anyways, iâm not reading ur second paragraph there bc clearly itâs just more unnecessary infighting and arguing, and personally i donât see a reason to try to tear the feminist community up for no reason. go make an actual argument, or have an actual thought, stop just complaining about minor things other feminists do that you donât like. you provide no critical thought, no genuine debate, no discussion, just pointless insults towards other feminists. grow up, go outside and do something real

Thinking about a video I saw a while ago on Instagram about "why do I use they/them pronouns for my (pet) rat", and the answer was that the rat was intersex - it had nipples and a penis or something. OP had taken it to a vet, gotten x-rays, ultrasounds and all kinds of scans. Now, I'm not a specialist on... rat anatomy.. or a vet, and I'm not intersex myself, though I do know many intersex women. I'd love to hear the opinion of someone who is any of the above, but I believe, based on my understanding from human anatomy, they probably had a very clear idea of whether that rat was male or female, and they probably told OP such. Either way, the either ignorant or purposeful implication that intersex = unsexed, or biologically non-binary, they/them worthy, seems pretty fucking offensive, considering all known people with intersex conditions still have a sex. No intersex person is automatically they/themmed by doctors, or anything of the like, and I think implying that just because someone has an intersex condition, it makes them not a man or a woman, not a she or a he is probably not the inclusive slay that OP thought it was.

i donât remember the exact details of the video, whether the male part was a penis or something else idk, but either way, fun fact, male rats do not have nipples. neither do horses, mice, and a few other species that are exceptions to the rule - generally though, yes, male mammals have nipples.

see. okay. this is true about chairs. and while i personally think âadult human female, female meaning of the sex which produces ovaâ is a very clear and comprehensive definition, not everyone agrees. and, for the sake of argument, thatâs fine! but thatâs not how the law works. lawmaking bodies agonize over the precise definitions of terms to ensure that the law does what theyâre hoping it will do, and is not easily misused. thatâs their job.
in ireland, the bread that fast food restaurants use is legally considered cake because of the sugar content. cake is regulated differently than bread. do you and i need to argue the finer points of cake and bread? how sweet do you think something has to be so we can consider it cake? does it matter? not really. but it does when youâre trying to tax staple foods and non-staple foods differently.
there have been multiple court cases in the US determining if a taco is a sandwich (as of May 2024, it is, as per the superior court of indiana, fun fact). is a taco a sandwich? i donât know! i donât really think so. if someone said âhey i made sandwichesâ and gave me a taco, iâd be confused. and anyway, does it matter? not really. but it does when iâm trying to determine if a taco restaurant can open in a space that wonât allow sandwich shops.
is a barbershop different than a hair salon? i think so. i go to a hair salon, my brother goes to a barbershop, if we switched our appointments weâd both be unhappy. it matters for the sake of communication, but is it a super important distinction? not really. but what if i signed a non-compete agreement with the barbershop i work at that said i wouldnât work at any nearby barbershop for six months after terminating my contract? can i work at a hair salon? now it matters.
if i needed fifty chairs for an event, and the company i contracted with sent fifty horses, or fifty tables, they could argue âbut itâs something with four legs that a person can sit on!â and theyâd be correct. but i would know iâd been given something different than what i asked for, and i would expect the chair supplier to know that, too. so if i want to demand a refund/return/exchange on the basis that iâve received the wrong product, do i have a claim?
so, okay, you feel we canât define the term âwomanâ perfectly. or maybe we can define it, as in we know what weâre trying to talk about, but we donât have a good term for it. wouldnât be the first time it happened! but if we are creating a legal category, it does in fact need to have parameters. meaningful parameters.
if i want to give some speeches promoting radical gender acceptance, i could probably get away with never outright defining the word woman. but what if i want men who kill women to have their crimes classified as hate crimes? i need to have a meaningfully defined category of what a woman is and what makes one different from a man. mexico requires that congressional candidates be split 50-50 between men and women to enforce gender parity. âwomanâ has to be a meaningfully defined category, or else ⌠well, youâll end up with the same problem they keep having to deal with.
if we want protections or resources for women, âwomenâ have to be a meaningful legal category. if it is a category anyone can opt into, then it is a category that includes anyone, which is not a meaningful category when it is meant to include only half of people. also women arenât chairs.
today i got into a heated argument with two TRAs over the twoXchromosomes subreddit. i made a post about the woman-centric subreddit now being overrun with men & MRAs who harass women that share their traumatic experiences with men. from SA, to spousal abuse, women found a space where they felt safe discussing their experiences in life.
posts expressing feminist thought, traumatic experiences & general fear of men were met with downvote bombings & harassment.
men pretend to be underage girls pretending not to understand masturbation and acting they don't know how to wash "down there", asking for advice for sexual gratification of course.
men CONSTANTLY adding their two cents to posts that absolutely do not need it.
the subreddit is now uncomfortable & stifling, mods do absolutely nothing about it. so i made a lengthy post and so many women responded. over 500 comments of women responding positively, and thanking me for calling out an ongoing issue.
well, apparently i am transphobic and i am acting "sussy" with saying; âevery time i come here and a woman makes a post with the most MINUSCULE feminist intent, or sharing her trauma, or difficulties in her personal experiences, it doesn't just get downvoted to oblivion, but filled up with comments of dudes adding their two cents, tone policing, making sexual & or fetish comments or "not all men"ing her. this is a woman centric community. two X chromosomes. we aren't going to make our tones softer, be gentler and tip-toe around our individual experiences to make YOU, a dude, comfortable.â
all it took was this for two TRAs to gang up on me & call me transphobic. saying this is why they don't trust cis feminists, and patronising me with expressions like "you must be so brave for calling yourself a radfem". they claimed that i cannot call myself a radical feminist because it's just bigoted towards trans women, despite me living in a 3rd world country where we don't even have working woman's shelters and proper laws against spousal abuse. "im sorry your life is hard as a woman living in a misogynistic country, but that is here nor there with regard to the terminology we're discussing" i'm sorry, what?
most of us aren't privileged enough to be libfems. i wish pink fucking girlboss they/she queen xenogender discourse was what my country could be doing, but life is not fair for everyone. if a woman here gets abused, stalked, or raped, she has nowhere to go. no phone number to call. no police to call. no prosecutor to trust in. and i went through this, personally.
by the end i had to block them, because they were derailing the conversation. but fuck, even when i literally do my best and try to be inclusive to everyone, i get spat in the fucking face.

Often people accuse radical feminism of being "white feminism" but they fail to consider that many countries outside the west don't have an option of liberal feminism, the only choice is radical, because they are struggling to stay afloat as is. They don't have the time for choice feminism and "bimboism" and transgenderism - to save their own lives, and that of their daughters, they need the most radical and fast-acting solutions. They need real action, and liberal feminism simply doesn't provide that.
I feel as though liberal feminism is almost a feel-good feminism, its a cosplay and a mimicry of feminism, designed only to make participants feel good about themselves. In theory, liberal feminism is about changing laws, not culture, which would render it mostly useless for women in the west, but perhaps still practical in countries with less equality - perhaps, in theory, the western liberal feminist goal right now, should be on helping these countries, but its not. in practice, the liberal feminist goal is to enable people to call themselves feminist while doing nothing. Liberal feminism is done and over, a thing of the past, besides of course, changing the laws for men to claim to be women to feel more comfortable.
I've never seen a liberal feminist take any action for countries where women are still oppressed to a legal degree, instead I've only seen great discussion of "kink-shaming", "transphobia", "enbyphobia" and stuff of the like. I've said it before and I'll say it again, liberal feminism at this point is largely anti-feminism, as it goes against everything previous feminists, suffragettes were concerned for. Everything second wave feminism stood for, and further, it goes against women's liberation itself, as it's concerned, currently, with everything besides women's safety and health.
