i’m sick and can’t even sit up to read and i’m tired of scrolling so i’ve decided it’s time to download a pdf of Whipping Girl and make myself even more miserable than my sickness is making me already. normally i write in books and underline important parts but i don’t know how to do that with a pdf on mobile, so i’ll reblog this through my side blog @carmillafem (to not clog up my main blog) with quotes and my responses to them. be warned: these thoughts and responses will not be polished statements like most of my blog. ordinarily, they’re intended only for my own eyes. i just wanted to share this experience w anyone who voted towards me reading this so we suffer in solidarity to some degree.

I do not believe that we are discriminated against in the same ways and for the exact same reasons. I have found that the ways people reacted to me back when I identified as a mostly closeted male crossdresser, or as a bigendered queer boy, were very different from one another and yet again different from the way people react to me now that I am an out transsexual woman. The focus on “transgender” as a one-size-fits-all category for those who “transgress binary gender norms” has inadvertently erased the struggles faced by those of us who lie at the intersection of multiple forms of gender-based prejudice.”

agree - lumping all issues into one is not ideal for addressing individual struggles. but there’s a much bigger difference between homosexuality and transsexuality than there is between “bigender” and transgender. so why are we so upset when homosexuals insist upon their own spaces, their own organisations, and focusing on LGB without the T? focusing on our niche rather than putting everything under a “queer umbrella”??

non-trans feminists who have written about us in the past have usually based their theses upon the assumption that we are really “men” (not women), and that our physical transitions to female and our expressions of femininity represent an appropriation of female culture, symbolism, and bodies. Besides being disrespectful of the fact that we identify, live, and are treated by the world as women, such flawed approaches have overlooked an important opportunity to examine far more relevant issues: the ways in which traditional sexism shapes popular assumptions about transsexual women and why so many people in our society feel threatened by the existence of “men who choose to become women.”

again, baseline twaw without explanation besides “we identify, life and are treated as such”. we are only “threatened” because you threaten us regularly, outside of that, we don’t think you are women. you think that’s “disrespectful”, but we don’t owe you respect just because you love femininity, a weapon designed to teach women to be tools for men. also: interesting how this book immediately, off the bat, chooses non-complicit feminists as the enemy, rather than men who actually hurt trans people.

Today, while it is generally considered to be offensive or prejudiced to openly discriminate against someone for being female, discriminating against someone’s femininity is still considered fair game. The idea that masculinity is strong, tough, and natural while femininity isweak, vulnerable, and artificial continues to proliferate even among people who believe that women and men are equals. And in a world where femininity is so regularly dismissed, perhaps no form of gendered expression is considered more artificial and more suspect than male and transgender expressions of femininity.

i can’t wait to hear a definition of femininity, because what i know of it, it’s gender stereotypes put on women such as long hair, nails, makeup, dresses, and personality-wise friendly, caring, bubbly etc. i don’t always pick an issue with femininity specifically, but i think it is fair game to say if you sacrifice convenience for beauty standards, your own needs for other’s interest, etc then you aren’t making the most ideal choices. same way too much masculinity is bad, too much femininity is harmful to the self. by many people’s standards, femininity is inherently “weak, vulnerable and artificial”. again, i’d like to know what the author considers “feminine”

i wouldn’t say masculine women cop it less difficult than gender-conforming women “universally” or in general. sure, working in construction or engineering, a masculine woman may be more respected than a feminine woman, but in less masculine professions/spaces, gender conforming women absolutely have better treatment than gnc.

“women as a whole” are effected by criticism of femininity - sort of like (apologies for the rather intense metaphor, i know) saying “criticising being greedy is bad, it hurts jews as a whole! it’s okay to be greedy!” or maybe. jews aren’t greedy. and women aren’t inherently feminine, but are socialised to be such. maybe there’s something more complex here than “most women are feminine so femininity = woman, and criticism of femininity = sexism”

I argue that certain aspects of femininity (as well as masculinity) are natural and can both precede socialization and supersede biological sex.

i’m sure fucking hoping you’ve got a source to back this idea up, because i’ve got a million to the contrary. note to reader: if ur curious, just read Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine. it pretty much debunks this whole concept, or at the very least demonstrates that it’s not proven enough to take as fact considering the implications about and consequences for women if you do so.

No form of gender equity can ever truly be achieved until we first work to empower femininity itself.

oh okay so this is the basis of “empowerment” feminism too. two birds with one stone i suppose. also, for anyone reading, apologies if you’re saying “duh!! everyone knows Whipping girl focuses on…”, i do prefer going into books blind. i can form my own opinion on what the author’s words mean before someone can tell me “no no no they ACTUALLY mean [this] and it’s totally feminist, despite how it sounds!!”. i’ll listen to that after. i get this from law. interpret words with their plain meaning before looking to external sources for interpretation.

Some readers may be transsexual themselves, or may be very active in the transgender community, but may not be tuned in to the many discourses about gender and transsexuality that exist in academia, clinical settings, feminism, or queer politics. Others may take an interest in this book from a women’s, queer, or gender studies perspective, being familiar with what non-trans academics have had to say about trans people, but without ever having been exposed to a transsexual woman’s take on these manydialogues and debates. Still others may be completely new to the subject, having picked up the book because they want to learn more about transsexuality, how to be a trans ally, or because they have a particular interest in the subjects of femininity and/or sexism.

funny how GC books often start with “i really hope someone who disagrees with me is reading this. this book is practically written for people who don’t agree with me. i want to have a discussion” meanwhile this book doesn’t even consider for a moment someone who disagrees could be an audience, only people who agree or are neutral on the topic.

gender essentialists (who believe that women and men represent two mutually exclusive categories, each born with certain inherent, nonoverlapping traits) and social constructionists (who believe that gender differences are primarily or exclusively the result of socialization and binary gender norms).

at least we show some understanding of what gender essentialism is. now let’s see if we can use the word properly when describing different ideologies. anyways i’m definitely a social constructionist and i have plenty of sources (many studies done after this book was written) to support the idea. this book is pretty much in direct competition with Delusions of Gender so far, sort of a pro-trans version, except without the sourcing of anything.

In chapter 19, “Putting the Feminine Back into Feminism,” I make the case that feminist activism and theory would be best served by working to empower and embrace femininity, rather than eschewing or deriding it, as it often has in the past. All of their effort was put into silencing victims and silencing any discussion of it - they gave him an at-home suspension for his own safety. No other reason. I was suspended for equally as long, only because i talked publicly about it and told women to avoid him because the school wasn’t doing anything to protect them from him. He had sexually offended 9 girls, and his first victim was my best friend. She also went to the police, and despite overwhelming evidence: him confessing that he’s done it, screenshots of him harassing her, saying “did you like it when i groped you” her saying “no” him saying “good.” - despite all that, all the police did was dissuade her from making a report.

It’s not that the crime is somehow wildly different from all other crime, it’s that every man in power has guilt from whatever they’ve done, and they’ll do everything in their power to protect a man they think is like them. It’s that the system, the men in it, don’t care at best.

The death of 1.5 million children is not “some bad stuff” - as I said on my other blog, I want you to imagine every single child from your local primary school, throwing up, gasping for air, starved, shot. Every single student, imagine their young faces. Now (assuming you live in the US and average primary school has 450~ children), times that pile of bodies by three thousand. And that’s only the jewish children that died. There’s footage of them moving piles of bodies using vehicle machinery.

I’m fucking embarrassed by our generation atp, we are the largest generation of holocaust deniers, and even those who aren’t outright denying are still fucking sickening in their downplaying of it, like this woman.

i don’t remember the exact details of the video, whether the male part was a penis or something else idk, but either way, fun fact, male rats do not have nipples. neither do horses, mice, and a few other species that are exceptions to the rule - generally though, yes, male mammals have nipples.

see. okay. this is true about chairs. and while i personally think “adult human female, female meaning of the sex which produces ova” is a very clear and comprehensive definition, not everyone agrees. and, for the sake of argument, that’s fine! but that’s not how the law works. lawmaking bodies agonize over the precise definitions of terms to ensure that the law does what they’re hoping it will do, and is not easily misused. that’s their job.

in ireland, the bread that fast food restaurants use is legally considered cake because of the sugar content. cake is regulated differently than bread. do you and i need to argue the finer points of cake and bread? how sweet do you think something has to be so we can consider it cake? does it matter? not really. but it does when you’re trying to tax staple foods and non-staple foods differently.

there have been multiple court cases in the US determining if a taco is a sandwich (as of May 2024, it is, as per the superior court of indiana, fun fact). is a taco a sandwich? i don’t know! i don’t really think so. if someone said “hey i made sandwiches” and gave me a taco, i’d be confused. and anyway, does it matter? not really. but it does when i’m trying to determine if a taco restaurant can open in a space that won’t allow sandwich shops.

is a barbershop different than a hair salon? i think so. i go to a hair salon, my brother goes to a barbershop, if we switched our appointments we’d both be unhappy. it matters for the sake of communication, but is it a super important distinction? not really. but what if i signed a non-compete agreement with the barbershop i work at that said i wouldn’t work at any nearby barbershop for six months after terminating my contract? can i work at a hair salon? now it matters.

if i needed fifty chairs for an event, and the company i contracted with sent fifty horses, or fifty tables, they could argue “but it’s something with four legs that a person can sit on!” and they’d be correct. but i would know i’d been given something different than what i asked for, and i would expect the chair supplier to know that, too. so if i want to demand a refund/return/exchange on the basis that i’ve received the wrong product, do i have a claim?

so, okay, you feel we can’t define the term “woman” perfectly. or maybe we can define it, as in we know what we’re trying to talk about, but we don’t have a good term for it. wouldn’t be the first time it happened! but if we are creating a legal category, it does in fact need to have parameters. meaningful parameters.

if i want to give some speeches promoting radical gender acceptance, i could probably get away with never outright defining the word woman. but what if i want men who kill women to have their crimes classified as hate crimes? i need to have a meaningfully defined category of what a woman is and what makes one different from a man. mexico requires that congressional candidates be split 50-50 between men and women to enforce gender parity. “woman” has to be a meaningfully defined category, or else … well, you’ll end up with the same problem they keep having to deal with.

the subreddit is now uncomfortable & stifling, mods do absolutely nothing about it. so i made a lengthy post and so many women responded. over 500 comments of women responding positively, and thanking me for calling out an ongoing issue.

well, apparently i am transphobic and i am acting "sussy" with saying; “every time i come here and a woman makes a post with the most MINUSCULE feminist intent, or sharing her trauma, or difficulties in her personal experiences, it doesn't just get downvoted to oblivion, but filled up with comments of dudes adding their two cents, tone policing, making sexual & or fetish comments or "not all men"ing her. this is a woman centric community. two X chromosomes. we aren't going to make our tones softer, be gentler and tip-toe around our individual experiences to make YOU, a dude, comfortable.”

all it took was this for two TRAs to gang up on me & call me transphobic. saying this is why they don't trust cis feminists, and patronising me with expressions like "you must be so brave for calling yourself a radfem". they claimed that i cannot call myself a radical feminist because it's just bigoted towards trans women, despite me living in a 3rd world country where we don't even have working woman's shelters and proper laws against spousal abuse. "im sorry your life is hard as a woman living in a misogynistic country, but that is here nor there with regard to the terminology we're discussing" i'm sorry, what?

most of us aren't privileged enough to be libfems. i wish pink fucking girlboss they/she queen xenogender discourse was what my country could be doing, but life is not fair for everyone. if a woman here gets abused, stalked, or raped, she has nowhere to go. no phone number to call. no police to call. no prosecutor to trust in. and i went through this, personally.

Often people accuse radical feminism of being "white feminism" but they fail to consider that many countries outside the west don't have an option of liberal feminism, the only choice is radical, because they are struggling to stay afloat as is. They don't have the time for choice feminism and "bimboism" and transgenderism - to save their own lives, and that of their daughters, they need the most radical and fast-acting solutions. They need real action, and liberal feminism simply doesn't provide that.

I feel as though liberal feminism is almost a feel-good feminism, its a cosplay and a mimicry of feminism, designed only to make participants feel good about themselves. In theory, liberal feminism is about changing laws, not culture, which would render it mostly useless for women in the west, but perhaps still practical in countries with less equality - perhaps, in theory, the western liberal feminist goal right now, should be on helping these countries, but its not. in practice, the liberal feminist goal is to enable people to call themselves feminist while doing nothing. Liberal feminism is done and over, a thing of the past, besides of course, changing the laws for men to claim to be women to feel more comfortable.
