Imagine a version of TOS where everything is exactly the same except for it’s made in 2026 and in one episode they end up going to the Homophobia Planet (stay with me) or something and everyone’s like “Wow….homophobia….we haven’t had that on earth in 500 years….how could a society be like this…” and they’re so homophobic they don’t even think men can be friendly with each other. At some point in the episode we find out their ruler who no one ever sees named…Hetero…told them to be homophobic or else the planet would explode. At some other point Jim inevitably realizes Hetero is an AI and just to prove to the people nothing bad will happen he kisses Spock. And the planet doesn’t explode but Hetero malfunctions and the people are free to love whoever they want. At the end of the episode we get the lighthearted scene with everyone on the bridge. Jim says “I wonder whether or not Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock could put aside their differences and kiss to bring about a better society,” and then it fades out. Because this is TOS where everything is exactly the same except the year it’s made there’s hardly any continuity so Jim and Spock kissing never gets brought up ever again. Now the real question is whether William Shatner would be opposed to this (Spock kiss) or we find out in the future someone else was supposed to kiss Spock but Shatner insisted it be him.

It’s Nyota.” Gene said, “I can’t give you that permission because Nichelle and I named her together, and she has rights to that, so you’ll have to call her and get her permission.” So he gave him my number, and he called me and I laughed and was delighted. He said, “I have a name and it’s Nyota.” I said, “That’s quite beautiful. What does it mean?” He said, “It means ‘star’.” I said, “You can have my permission!” So I have since said that her name is Nyota Upenda Uhura, which would mean a free-floating star: “star of freedom and peace”. I cannot get this poem out of my head. It haunts me. Joyously, it haunts me. 

This poem format is my favorite thing and this is the first time I’ve ever seen it’s origin story. I love it. Every time.
