90 years ago to the day, De had his graduation ceremony from high school.
What kind of student was De?
De: Oh, high school teachers down here in front. Wants to know what kind of a high school kid I was. Well, I was a poor Baptist preacher's son. I was going to a place called Decatur High School. Yay, Decatur. And my father had no church at the time and we were on WPA and NYA. I was working after school cleaning up the lockers and that sorta thing. And I did fairly well in school except math. I just couldn't stand math. I've never been able to use that x + y=2 to this day.

The Innocent Young Man Opens in Long Beach.
Sometime between 5/28/42 and 6/6/42 De will call Carolyn to help spend her money
De: I was doing a play in Long Beach Theater, and this young lady was involved in the play, and at the end of the play, I was playing a beach bum. Still a bum you know, you never get rid of it. At the end of the play, he’s broke, you know that sort of thing, and we were using her money for stage money. And she hands me a five dollar bill at the end of the play and says “here take this” and do something with it, I’ve forgotten what. But, anyhow, one day I was sitting in a bar shortly after that in Long Beach and I realized that I had walked out of there with her five dollar bill. So I went to the telephone and I called her and I told her I was in a local bistro and that I had her five dollars and would she come down and help me spend it. And she came down, met me in the bistro, and she’s been spending it ever since. There you are."
@trek-tracks Do you think you could help me find this play? It was also called Mr. and Mrs. Phipps. It's by John Hamilton

Star Trek began filming the first episode "The Corbomite Maneuver". On that Tuesday (Monday was a rehearsal/photo op day) Kirk's physical was the first scene shot, then the famous salad scene.

De is injured filming "Gunfight at O.K. Corral."
Rehearsing with Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, and John Sturges (director).
The injury happening and it was kept in the film.
Here is De at a 1984 NY Convention detailing what happened (transcript below):
She also wanted me to mention a story that happened to me during Gunfight at OK Corral with Hal Wallis.
We were doing a scene in Arizona and we were approaching the Gunfight at the OK Corral and we were near a great big ditch. And in this gunfight I've been wounded at this time. I'm shot and I fall into this ditch and Krik Douglas pulls me to safety. He had to pull me about what was it, at least 50 yards. Now I had fallen on my, I made a bad fall and fell on my right arm on a shotgun caught inside. I tore all the cartilage loose from the side, which I didn't know at the time, I just knew I was in terrible pain. Kirk, of course, didn’t know this. So I’m flat on my back and he gets down on his knees and he’s pulling me this way and the camera is following me. And each time he’s pulling me, I’m going, “uh, uh, oh, oh,” until they finally said, “Cut!” And Kirk said, “Geez De, that’s great!” He said, “you sounded really [laughter]”
Now I couldn’t get up. I said, “I’m afraid something’s wrong. I can’t get up. I can’t move.” They tried to get me up and I couldn’t get up. So they finally brought the company doctor over and he pressed me and he said, “Something’s happened to him.” And they gave me a shot for the pain and took me to a local hospital there in Tucson. So, by the time I got into the hospital, they gave me another shot and put me up on the x-ray table and x-rayed me. The doctor said, “All your cartilage is torn loose. You should remain in the hospital certainly overnight and maybe tomorrow.” I got up and I had had this morphine that they had injected in me and I said, “Well I feel fine.” I said, “I’d rather go back to the hotel.” And he said, “Well you’re being very foolish young man.” He said, “You really should stay here.” I said, “No, I’m okay. I’ll go back.”
So I went back to the hotel and that night I felt so good that I- I was all taped and had all this tape around me. I got dressed and it was in the hot summer, I’ll never forget, and I had a white silk shirt on. Jack Elam knocked on the door and he opened up the door with his wicked eye and said, “How you doing, Kelley?” I said, “I feel great.” He said, “Well come on downstairs,” he said “we’re gonna have a drink, join us.”
So I went downstairs to a private club that they had in this hotel. It was for members only, and they would let motion picture cast people come in there to have dinner, and then the local citizens were able to enjoy Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas and all those people who were celebrities. So I went downstairs and I joined the table with Kirk Douglas and John Sturgess, the director, and Burt Lancaster, and Jack Elam, and an actor named John Ireland. And we’re sitting at this table.
Suddenly I began to get warm and perspiration started to form on my forehead. And I looked over and I said to John Sturgess, I said, “I think I’ll go upstairs and rip off this tape. It’s getting hot in here.” He said, “Well, have the guy turn the air conditioning up.” So the guy turned the air conditioning up and I continued to get warm and I said, “No, I’m still warm. I’m gonna tape this tape off.” So I reached over and I got the check as I got up to pay for the round of drinks. I walked to the bartender and by the time I got to the bartender, I looked down and I could see water pouring on to this silk shirt. And the bartender said, “Yes? Can I do something for you?” And I said, “yes, you can catch me.” I fell and the horrible part is, here it is this lovely club with these leather sofas on the side, and when I came to, I was throwing up in a gold spittoon and everybody said, “Another drunken actor!”

Susanna Gifs and Screenshots
To make up for the quality with less headache inducing flashing, here are you go.
(Only 2-3 weeks until we have HD quality.)
Baby's first recorded BLEM!
I think the only other time I've ever seen De "dance" was in I Mudd... (I seriously need to find Gypsy Holiday).
Aww baby's first filmed kiss.
How many weeks until a clean copy, because BOY HOWDY.
Yay! He makes it through alive in his first film!
Susanna
Warning: Lots of flashing.
(Edited)
Also this came out way worse than I thought. Sorry guys. The flashing is due to my camcorder not recording at the proper frames per second. I am unbelievably frustrated with the projector. But I am sending the film off to be digitized (speedy service 2-3 weeks). When it comes I will share with everyone.

Preview of Susanna
I did a "dirty dub" in which one records the projection with a camcorder/phone. The camcorder got better footage but I'll have to edit it together because the projector did not want to cooperate. This is from my un-fancy phone. I'm also going to send the film away to be digitized for a better quality, but that'll take about 4-6 weeks.
Meanwhile, enjoy (fyi it's a silent film):

De and Carolyn attended the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Parade. This is where they first met Kris Smith.
Kris Smith:
Parade
De liked to tell the story of he and Carolyn meeting Kris. Here is at the 90 09 01 Seattle Convention. Transcript below.
De: Do it again! What a wonderful looking group of people. You're as beautiful as this state. (applause) It's true, I tell you. It's been a long time since I've been here. This is a very, very beautiful state and beautiful city. I took a walk yesterday downtown and they had to throw a rope to me to get me up a couple of hills. I tell you, I bet you people have got legs like Arnold Schwarzenegger. I have never seen so many hills in my life. And you can't beam up them or beam down them. No, I was here a long time ago, back in 1968, for the third year of our series. I came up here, I think it was ’68, ’67; I was to attend, we always joke about it, the Queen of the Apple Festival in Wenatchee. In fact, I met a little girl up here who was running alongside the car with a sign, We love De, or something like that.
And so when I got back to Hollywood I received a letter from her. It was really not a letter, it was an article about her going to Wenatchee in order to see me and in order to say hello. And so in reading it, I was so impressed with it that I sent it to a movie magazine and they published it. And I think she may be in the audience. Is Kris Smith here? Where? She's still following me around. (laughter) She was in Los Angeles, what was it, about four weeks ago you were there? Everywhere I go, I can't shake this girl. She's got something on me, so that's the reason I have to introduce her. She's a lovely gal and she's doing well and now she's decided to go with all the animals down in Los Angeles and do something to further that writing career and I’m sure she will. Thank you, Kris.
Here is the article Kris wrote, printed in the 69 01 TV Star Parade:
88 05 01 - Atlanta Convention - De's childhood
De: Well thank you for that Georgia welcome. It’s good to be home. Do you know, this really is a great part of my home. I lived in a number of places in Georgia. Kind of reaching back I think my first real memory starts in a little town called Athens, Georgia. And then we went down to a country town called Woodville, Georgia. Does anybody know where Woodville, Georgia is? [unintelligible] maybe it’s off the map now. Then from Woodville we moved to Conyers, Georgia. There we are. And I spent many happy years in Conyers, Georgia. And from Conyers we went to Decatur.
And I went to school out in Decatur. I used to usher on weekends at then, it’s not even here anymore, there was a theater called the Capitol Theater, and then I ushered at the Paramount, and for a brief time, over at the Fox Theater. Yeah, the big Fox. And, I don’t know, I sometimes wonder if I while I was standing there with all the motion pictures going by that I had no idea that someday that is where I would end up.
So after graduation I went out to California to visit an uncle. And he said hey kid you’ve never been out of the state of Georgia before, he said, why don’t you stick around for a while? And I did, and I stayed a year and then I came back home to stay and something kept pulling me back. And I went back to California, and it was destined I suppose to eventually end up in Star Trek.
As you can see I have a lot of feelings for this part of the country. I still have a lot of family and relatives scattered around that I don’t even know up in the hills of Georgia some of them.
