Fandoms tendency to treat something that could remotely be gay as if it’s proven gay fact needs to stop and I feel in some way is slowing us down.

If a creator can get the same love from the fan base for making something *kind of gay* without any risk to their bottom line by making it outright gay as they would if they made their work explicitly gay, they have no reason to represent us in a real way.

“They retweeted my slash art!” and “this is queer coded!” Don’t deserve accolades, they aren’t representation, stop acting like they are.

when adults tell teenagers that the dull ache of high school is just a survivable mess that they’re making up to be worse than it is, i think of this:

when i was in sophomore year, i was in an accident and the left side of my face was hit. i sat in the emergency room with a clearly broken nose and blood coming out of a laceration on my cheek. and i did my homework. i did my homework with a black eye swelling up, with little red fingerprints on it.

and he told me to redo it. that it wasn’t good enough. the assignment itself was worth maybe five points out of a hundred. he wouldn’t forgive me for it. when i explained about my concussion, he told me to do it somewhere dark.

we don’t make it up. the value of our lives becomes almost nothing at all. the quality of living that is allowed is so low that students learn to apply it to themselves. they are useless, unimportant, a machine to figure out problems without any food, sleep, family time. nothing. we call teenagers moody because something in them breaks a little. we don’t say: they are stressed beyond measure and they believe their own physical health is less important than the quality of the product they’re forced to produce. we don’t say: wouldn’t you be moody too?

We had officers who came into our school to do a presentation when I was in 8th grade, I think. And the point of the presentation was We had no rights until we were eighteen. This was 1999-2000 ish. And I can’t remember the exact wording, but the impression was we didn’t have any freedoms or any expectations of rights. We weren’t people yet. I am 90% sure we were told the Bill of Rights didn’t apply to us yet because we weren’t 18.

My freshman year of high school they flat out told us that unless our dreams were computer IT or a job in healthcare, that we weren’t going to find any satisfying kind of employment after college. That the jobs just weren’t going to be there. (I graduated the first time from college in 2008. So. They weren’t completely wrong on the economy going bust).

They’re still trying to tell Millennials that we don’t matter.

Her name is Theresa Kachindamoto, and she is a senior chief - political leader of a region with a population of about 900,000 people.

She didn’t run for election; she was appointed, without her knowledge, while she was living and working in a completely different part of the country. She just received a call one day telling her to come back to her childhood home, because she was in charge now.

So she did; and when she arrived, she discovered widespread sexual abuse of children. She browbeat 50 uncooperative local leaders into accepting her decision to annul all the marriages. She then fired four of them when they continued to allow children to be married off in their areas. She still faces widespread opposition from parents who consider it their right to sexually abuse their daughters if they want to; but Kachindamoto very evidently does not give a fuck, and is continuing to use political and legal means to protect children in the region.

She’s not just an anonymous do-gooder; she’s an effective political leader despite incredibly difficult circumstances. Theresa Kachindamoto.
