So we've had a year of importing cattle from Mexico during a screwworm outbreak without monitoring the outbreak that we already knew about. Mexico's outbreak is pretty bad btw, and cases have been found not just in cattle and dogs but also humans. I assume the rest of Central America too. Not that many people seem to give a fuck about them ig.

Not to mention, it would be weird to put one "die" at the start and another at the end The verb also usually goes at the end in Latin sentences, just for that extra bit of fun. So yes, in short, this is not actually Latin, and Google Translate is very bad at Latin in particular. Nonetheless, still charming.

So yes: true that poetical Latin might be more at liberty to split the "die"-s up that far, though "timeo" (verb) is still more likely in most cases to go at the end, which would place them together anyway ("die ad die timeo," "day to day I fear" if translated in strict word order, which would make sense to an English speaker and sound more poetic anyway). Keep in mind, however, that my Latin is a) fairly rusty and b) mostly used for said formulaic legal document reading rather than freeform verse, so don't super-hard quote me on this.

But perhaps “temu” is a hapax legomenon (in which case we would need the rest of the text to gloss it) or a scribal error for temeratu, from temero, “I defile or disgrace”. In that case, and in true Tumblr form, I might translate it as “daily I disgrace, in the manner of the day”, with some errors attributable to the scribe.

I looked this part of the English text up because the Finnish translation was so weird, I really wanted to know what LMM had originally written. Back in 1930, the translator clearly also had trouble figuring out what "pussy-mouthed" means, because he's translated it as "hänellä oli märkäpäitä suussa" = "he had pimples in(side) his mouth". Ew! Ew! Ew!! And how plentiful and/or hugelarge are said pimples supposed to be that Valancy is even aware of them?? Eugh.

Also, with respect to the complexions, Valancy’s complexion at the beginning is said to be unpleasant because it’s “sallow;” the text suggests her pallor is of the muddy variety and she just looks vaguely washed out all the time (probably bc she’s forced to wear gross neutrals like tobacco brown constantly). Sallow complexions could be associated with mixed race backgrounds (horrors!) or in a more mundane circumstance, just vaguely indicative of poor health, particularly with the liver. This is in contrast to Olive, whose pallor is more “roses and cream,” which means she’s pale in all the “right” places and rosy in all the “right” places and you could probably see her blue veins through her translucent skin easily in places. This was supposed to be an indicator of good health but, like today, was likely just as much an indicator of access to good cosmetics. And, in Olive and Valancy’s case, a lack of cortisol which Valancy has an abundance of.
