The fact that one of the main musical themes in Project Hail Mary is a Dies Irae but in a major tonality means SO MUCH to me, you guys have no idea. This motif that, for centuries, has been associated with death and despair, recontextualized in a warm, hopeful, positive light. I'm gonna cry and throw up if I think about it too hard. It says, "I know things have been dark and hopeless, but it's gonna be okay. Better than okay, it's gonna be beautiful, I promise." ā¤ļø
Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.
It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.
It's rude.
It's not just rude to make me read something you didn't want to write. It is that you expect me to respond to your email written by Claude. You don't even want me to talk to you. You want me to talk to Claude so that you can make Claude respond for you. It is rude to expect me to talk to a chatbot when I wanted to talk to you.
It is also rude for you to receive correspondence or documents from me and have your chatbot of choice determine what to do with them without them ever being examined by a person, whether the chatbot also writes a response for you or not.

Grace remembered the whole "being forced to go on a suicide mission" thing before Rocky moved out (I think even movie!Rocky still had to go back to the Hail Mary at least once to get his stuff, and in the book this memory happened much earlier), so may I offer: Grace breaking down and writing "COWARD" in big bold letters over everything else on his "Who am I?" whiteboard. This is how he sees himself in the moment, nothing else seems to matter. It's fine, Rocky can't see it ā and even if he could, he can't read. It's just a little self-depricating reminder for himself. "Hey, that's who you really are". "Hey, you can't pretend anymore". "Hey, you are not a hero, even if your whole planet and your alien friend see you as one".
Except, before parting ways, he teaches Rocky the basics of the written English (in the book Rocky asks him to and I assume movie!Rocky would want that also), and Rocky runs around the ship pointing his camera thingy everywhere trying to find and read all the words, like an excited child who is learning how to read.
And he sees the board.
And it's funny, at first. He bullies Grace for the messy handwriting. He complains about the lines that are not 100% straight. And thenā
"Grace, what C-O-W-A-R-D means, question?"
...And Grace knows that he can't lie.
in the spirit of Pride Month I've been thinking of different ways my ocs would think about their own gender/sexuality/hangups/internalized issues, and I'm kicking my legs and giggling to myself (deviously) about it.
It would be so, so easy for everyone to have the Exact Terminology for who and what they are, of course, but is that interesting? Is that fun? Does it explore what a character would realistically know about said terminology? Does it explore what a character would realistically know about themselves?
I might know what they are, yes. I may even refer to them as such on my own time. I probably will!
But they don't. They don't know. Like 99% of them would not be in a place to sit down and read about queer history and the variety of labels under the umbrella, they're just riding on gut feelings, societal pressures, and trying not to die in a world 50 years after a magical, earth-shattering apocalypse. They're busy worrying about Other Things right now. They'll think about it later. These feelings will always be there Later.
The variety with which they know themselves is also just, so funny to me. Like, the characters that I've settled on so far vary between:
"The idea of being with a man disgusts me (because then when we'd have to have kids I'd have to be the one to get pregnant and I really really hate that idea)(plus who would I even get with? Darren? Fuck Darren(not like that)) but I don't know any women I could be with, either, (the town's population keeps dwindling as more and more people my age keep jumping on ships to Get Out Of Here, and most folks staying behind are pairing up to try to have kids) so I guess I'll stay single despite it all (I don't mind, there's nothing I need that a friend can't give me)"
"The matters of the flesh concern me not. You can keep holding my hand, though, if you must (it's definitely for your needs more than mine) (please don't let go)"
"I'm content with where I'm at in life and with who I am (not happy, but I don't outright hate myself anymore so I'll take what I can get) and if I have to self-reflect on why I'm only content for a single second I'm going to throw myself into the sea."
"Yeah, I'm gay."
(specific oc info+more explanations below the cut bc I'm in a yappy mood but this is getting long lol)
Huh? What's this?? Something is on this 5c coin???

I think itās funny how Mormon God was like ālook polygamy is super important and I am telling you my followers to practice it even in the face of persecutionā and then 40 years later Congress said Utah wouldnāt be given statehood as long as the LDS practiced polygamy and Mormon God was like āOk tell everyone I changed my mindā
I just really like the idea that Mormon God like, basically caved into pressure from the federal government

i hate it when i can tell my perception of a character is diminishing in real time because of fandom wank. like nooooo i want to maintain an objective relationship with the text but everyone is so annoying about you nooooo
Hereās the thing: authors know when they get a rec on an older story. Thereās a telltale uptick of kudos (with a 10-15% comment rate if youāre lucky) in your digest email.
The thing is, thereās no way to know where these people are coming from. In the before, when fandom was more in the corners we all knew about, you could search LJ or a message board or whatever social bookmarking site we were using. You could join the community and participate.
You could get a little dopamine hit by seeing someone tell their friends why they loved your story.
Anymore, those recs are hidden in discords, or in tiktoks or instagram slideshows that you canāt search for. Theyāre inaccessible, not discoverable unless youāre already there. You may never know why 27 people left kudos on an old story of yours, what they liked and found in your writing. You just get the thumbs up and a kinda lonely feeling, cause these could be your people. You could like them, maybe. You could be friends.
But youāll never find out why they stopped by, or what people are saying about you behind your back, and thatās sad.
So thank you to the people who still do public rec lists on this webbed site. You are my sunshine, and Iām appreciative of all of you.
