Larpers of the events of 2017:
Wear sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the event, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your character. Or never mind. You may not understand how much game you provided until they’ve faded, but trust me, in 20 years when the game’s over you’ll see from froth posts you can’t grasp now about how much people saw what you were doing, and how great your costume really looked. You are not as ignored as you imagine.
Don’t worry about your next character. Or worry, but know that until you gen them up you won’t know which members of your prospective group happen to be dead at the same time.
The real troubles for your character are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind. The kind that blindside you at ten to time-out on some idle Sunday.
Do one thing every event that risks character death.
Sing.
Be reckless with your ballgowning, but check in with your targets. Don’t put up with people who are causing you OOC distress.
Pull your blows.
Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.
Remember the compliments you receive; forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old lammies.
Stretch yourself.
Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your character. If you’re having fun playing them, keep doing so. If you’re not, retire them. You are not obliged to keep going to things that aren’t fun, even if it will make group infrastructure harder, your group will understand.
Get plenty of water.
Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.
Maybe you’ll ballgown, maybe you won’t.
Maybe you’ll battle, maybe you won’t.
Maybe you’ll die at your first event.
Maybe you’ll see the final time out when the system ends.
Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance; so are everybody else’s.
Enjoy your hard skills. Use them every way you can. Don’t be afraid of them, or what other people think of them.
Play, even if your own system consumes much of your weekends.
Read the rules. Follow them.
Do not read feedback threads for your own events until two weeks have past.
Get to know your group’s characters; you never know when they’ll be gone for good.
Be nice to your event crew; they are your best link to great event drama and the people most likely to stick it to you in the future.
Understand that props come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on.
Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and larp-style, because the larp that is far away. or the larp that may not be entirely your jam, may provide you with the best stories in years to come.
Go to major fest larp once, but leave before it makes you resent everybody who got the plot.
Go to intense parlour larp once, but leave before you forget how to hit things properly.
Vary character archetypes.
Accept certain inalienable truths: Players will dislike each other, Campaign plot will fudge things. and when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young everyone was reasonable, Campaign plot was consistent, and people pulled their blows.
Pull your damn blows.
Don’t expect everyone else to automatically follow your perfect arc.
Maybe you have a plot-line, maybe you have a writer fan, but you never know when either might get derailed.
Don’t mess too much with snaz, or when you get as far as time in, all your friends will have been murdered.
Be careful whose weapons you buy, but be patient with those who you hit with it.
Tales about past larps are a form of nostalgia. Dispensing them is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen

As a Dungeon Master I nearly scrolled past this before my brain kicked my own ass and reminded me that I have tried looking up 'Blue Gemstones' at LEAST a dozen times in the last six months and never found anything this helpful.
So my sister wants to start sewing more, because
a. She’s 5′ 11″ and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.
b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and it’s difficult to find natural fiber clothes that aren’t made of cotton
c. She’s a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance
So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.
And recently she asked “So where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isn’t polyester” and mom was like ‘go ask your sister’
And I, of course, crashed into the group text like “GET A PEN I HAVE WEBSITES FOR U” and honestly I’m thrilled about this

I don’t know a lot about sewing, but I want to make or have my mom make some linen pants & shirts for when I’m watering, because it gets to 105 here and we have mosquitos so I need to be covered. What type of linen do I buy? Also, linen pajama shorts, yes/no?
(I’ve been wearing my renfaire pants which are a linen mix, I think. But the frikking mosquitos that hide in the tomatoes get my arms)
Medium weight is what I’d go with.
And linen pajama shorts is a HARD yes.

Mood doesn’t specialize in natural fabrics but they do have basically every fabric ever made so
For wools, I cannot recommend Woolsome enough! They’re a bit more expensive then the above links, but they have a spectacular range of colours and weights, as well as diamond pattern and herringbone weaves. They also have a range of linens, though not as extensive.

Do you have a fav larp pc to play?
Most of the LARPs I take part in have pre-written roles and are one to three episodes long so let me anwser in two different directions:
My favourite PC that I ever played was Charlotte Harper on a Frostpunk LARP. It was a challenging role, because introverts are easily isolated from the plot, but I really wanted to take on a morally gray or maybe even evil person and I had so much fun being bad :D Charlotte has a big tag here cause I can't stop drawing her now.
Whereas my favourite *kind* of a character to play is probably militaristic characters with deep convictions. I also immensely enjoyed playing male characters both times I got to try it, but I'm still building my confidence on this field - there's a certain kind of men that I feel I can convincingly pass as.
That's so fun! Its neat to hear about different larps and larp characters
I'd never considered short larps, the only ones I know/have been to are all long-term ones, but I bet it would let you try out all kinds of fun characters!
Charlotte sounds so fun! I'm too nervous to play a morally grey/evil character, but I feel like the story you get from it would be so cool
annoying when shows set in the medieval period have the women with thier hair just long and unstyled and out . girl go put on your wimple girl 🤦♀️
like there are so many fun medieval hair and headgear options, it's so boring just seeing loose beachy waves meant to appeal to 21st century beauty standards

From an adventuring perspective (as a fantasy larper), hair gets knotted SO FAST and SO FURIOUSLY when you're running around in the woods and fighting things. ESPECIALLY when you don't have access to any good bathing facilities

came back imprisoned by obligation to bear responsibility for the love and grief that others feel for you. came back painfully aware of the horror of existence. came back to a life you cannot bear to live anymore, to a body you cannot bear to call yours.
So a couple Christmases ago, I got an emergency whistle in my stocking. It was supposed to be deafeningly loud, so obviously not the sort of thing you blow on Christmas morning just to see what it sounds like. And let me tell you, pretty much that whole morning, I was dying to blow that whistle. Out of curiosity, and because I wasn't supposed to. The next time I had the house to myself, it was one of the first things I did.
All of this to say, when Susan rode around with her horn strapped to her saddle, I wonder how often she was intrusively tempted to just pick it up and blow it? Was is hard to run around Narnia with a horn she was only supposed to blow when she was definitely, seriously, for-real in danger?
And more to the point, what about Caspian? Did he ride away from Dr. Cornelius with a little voice in the back of his head going blow the horn dude c'mon just blow it find out what it sounds like c'mon dude?

The province is banning hiking/camping/etc until there's any degree of rain (>a week probably, the place is currently one big tinderbox) and I'm slightly charmed at just how incredibly needlessly ominous the graphic they came up for the press release is.
