This really hurt. The ‘actually autistic’ tag on Tumblr is very friendly most of the time, and I thought “let’s check out the autism tag on instagram” since I’m active there as well. I type in “#autistic” and all I see is memes about “autism”. Memes tagged with #autism, #autistic and #cringe. It made me feel like shit. It made me feel like my entire existence is a joke to neurotypicals. 

Why is this even a thing? We’re human beings with emotions, and we understand things, y’know?

You might think that “its just a tag on a meme, why would you get so upset over it?”. It’s not only about the fact that its offensive, its about the fact that many of us struggle to cope in a disrespectful and nonunderstanding real life, and we want the internet to be safe, at least. It’s about the fact that we are constantly judged because of our interests and our existence in general. I can’t even word myself right now because this really upset me. And it has probably upset so many other autistic people. 

I just wanted to check out the autistic people of instagram, and what do I get? Memes tagged with #autistic like its some kind of joke, like my existence is a joke. Like I won’t be able to understand why its being tagged #autistic. 

I don’t speak negatively about my wife to other people. Not because she’s perfect (which is an impossible and unfair standard) but because she deserves a husband she can trust. To say anything about my wife that I wouldn’t say to her face, would be a betrayal of that trust.

I DON’T SPEAK NEGATIVELY ABOUT MY WIFE TO OTHER PEOPLE. NOT BECAUSE SHE’S PERFECT (WHICH IS AN IMPOSSIBLE AND UNFAIR STANDARD) BUT BECAUSE SHE DESERVES A HUSBAND SHE CAN TRUST. TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT MY WIFE THAT I WOULDN’T SAY TO HER FACE, WOULD BE A BETRAYAL OF THAT TRUST. 

I NEVER WANT HER TO SPEND A SINGLE MOMENT WORRYING ABOUT THE WAY I TALK ABOUT HER WHEN SHE’S NOT AROUND.

emotional abuse victims who are told they will never be loved by anyone else and they are not a good person, you are amazing.

emotional abuse victims who feel manipulative and often catch themselves mirroring actions of their abusers and feel sick to their stomachs because theyre “turning into them”, you are not them and never will be. you are so much better than that.

emotional abuse victims who have to live every day suffering because nobody understands how messed up you are from what they said or did or made you do, you arent alone.

Because they didn’t know what abuse looked like.

Because they internalized a lot of messages about chewed gum and used tape.

Because they were financially dependent on their abuser.

Because their culture or religion forbids it.

Because they were scared it would escalate.

Because they kept hearing from others how great their abuser is.

Because they were told that relationships take work.

Because they really did love their abuser.

Because their parents’ relationship is just like that.

Because they think no one else could truly love them.

Because their abuser is really loving when not abusive.

Because they feel like they “owe” their abuser.

Because they wanted to make it work.

Because they don’t think someone like them can be abused.

Because all their relationships were like that.

Because they reached out and no one believed them.

Because they were worried it would ruin their life.

Because they wanted to protect their children.

I said that I needed you more than you needed me. But that isn’t true, is it?

I think snuggies are the one example almost everyone knows. They were invented for wheelchair users (Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a coat on and off of someone in a wheelchair? Cause it’s PRETTY FUCKIN HARD.) But now everyone just acts like they’re some ~quirky, white people thing~ and not A PRODUCT DESIGNED TO MAKE PEOPLES DAY TO DAY LIVES 10000X EASIER.

Like… of course there’s no reason for that guy to knock over that bowl of chips. However, the person it was actually designed for has constant hand tremors that would make this pretty rad, but since we don’t want to show that in a commercial, here’s an able bodied guy who can’t remember how gravity works.
