"catholic boy" is probably one of my favourite pieces. while "save your love" (porco x reader) brings back a lot of good memories of writing it and i loved portraying manipulation/emotional abuse in a way that wasn't too clear, so both the readers and the actual Reader(tm) were confused if this guy was actually mean or there was overthinking involved, i think "catholic boy" is more complex because of 1) the issues it talks about and 2) how i feel i've worked with the characters
i must admit the first chapter is quite different from the rest because i was not planning on writing part 2. hell, when i wrote part 2, it was just gonna be some spicy blurbs here and there. but then a story started crafting itself and i followed along. and i think it fits, because for reader(tm) it really was just that: a bit of fun here and there. she was never emotionally compromised or wanted it to go anywhere else. but of course, they kept talking, getting to know each other and something else started brewing there. it's not a spoiler to say they're feelings things for each other sdfkjh
in a way, it's a love story, yes. but it's also both of them realizing they were pretty sure about their way of thinking and now they're both doubting it. reader(tm) feels bad when she threatens armin to tell on him, armin feels bad when he discovers that the catholic church has been hiding abuse allegations all over the world. confronting your ideas is liberating but also hard when you first do it. it hits especially for both of them: the church is all that armin has, and on the other hand reader(tm) thinks she's always right and now she's not acting in a good way. following chapters will focus a bit more on these, how they're both changing and getting faced with the thought of "i may be in the wrong"
about the specific question (SORRY i started elsewhere) i don't think it's an anti-religious statement. i'm not catholic (obviously lol) but i grew up in a catholic school and my country is heavily catholic as well. i've gone to catholic masses, to christian "gatherings" (i'm not sure if that's right word for that) and i felt both were really restrictive. i'm not gonna go all karl marx "religious is the opium of the people", but i do think it's, by definition restrictive. and anything restrictive can be quite dangerous.
of course, i know this doesn't apply to everyone. i have catholic friends that question the catholic church and publicly condemn it for multiple reasons, but their faith is still there. they still find peace in church. and i do think that's really beautiful and as someone who doesn't have faith......... i truly envy it.
i think faith is beautiful. i think it can help you overcome darkness. i think it can give you a sense of peace. and i think you either have it or you don't. in my case i don't so i do truly envy it lol
i'm a psychologist. while my thesis ended up being about something else, the first research i did by myself was the relationship between religiousness and suicide ideation. it has been studied before, ofc, and my results were congruent with what has been found already: religious people tend to have less suicidal ideation. there's a number of reasons for this: fear of hell/punishment, the idea that you're never alone (because god is there for you), the idea that praying will help, etcetc. of course in some cases religious people may have some added negative thoughts, but in /general/, they don't think of suicide as much as the average person.
however i don't think religiousness is the thing that helps people. i think it's faith. now, it wasn't an extensive research, i did it in my 4th year of undergrad (in peru it's 5 years undergrad + 1 year of internship to graduate) and i never ended up publishing it, so i don't recall details BUT i do think that believing in something bigger than yourself can help psychologically
the problem is when you let that bigger thing think for you.
i think that's the real problem/danger. and it doesn't ONLY involver religion. if you let a person, a religion, a cult, anything, think for you and never question it, then it's not a good relationship. you SHOULD question things. even if you agree in the end. so, in this case both armin and reader(tm) ARE questioning (or at least starting to question) things. armin is questioning the catholic church, reader(tm) is questioning her own beliefs (for now she has only been like church bad!!!! religion bad!!!! im better than everyone else!!! and i think she's becoming softer gradually).
to sum it up (because this isn't proofread and i just let myself be), i don't think "catholic boy" is anti-religious. i think it's a piece about confronting your own ideas and the importance of questioning everything. ofc it's also about sexuality, romance, etcetc, but i would argue it calls reader to question their beliefs (even if they don't change their mind) at least to prove themselves they're ALLOWED to question them.

edit: i completely forgot to mention hilda furacao. to sum it up, havent' watched it yet but i've been spoiled a lot on tiktok, while there's some similarities with catholic boy i wasn't inspired by that novela (i knew about the novela after i started the story) it's not necessarily going to end the same way or have the same storyline. it DOES look cool tho, it's on my watchlist

A soft, airy chuckle fills the silent room before you even open your eyes. You don't have a key, but your left-overs from last night are still on his fridge.
You heat them on the microwave, ignoring Levi's 'use the pan, for fuck's sake' as he leaves the kitchen. It's not long until your fried noodles with veggies are ready. The plastic contained is a bit wonky due to the heat, but at least this way you won't have to clean up after.
Grabbing a fork from Levi's drawer, you follow him, sitting on the other side of the couch. You kick your shoes off and shuffle until you find a comfortable position, back against your favourite cushion and legs tangled with his. Eating in silence, you observe Levi for a moment as he scribbles down on a stack of papers. His eyebrows are furrowed, as they usually are when he's at campus, and you can almost listen to his rude comments as he continue to read what you suppose are his student's papers of the week.
"I remember once they banned red ink pen from my teachers, back in school," you mused, taking another bite of your noodles. Levi stays in silence, but you know it's an invitation for you to continue. "Apparently seeing a lot of red ink on your homework makes you feel bad about yourself. So teachers had to use blue instead."
"That's stupid," he says, striking half a paragraph as he turns the page over. "You felt better if you failed in blue?"
"Can't say," you shrugged. A playful smug draws upon your lips. "I never failed anything in school."
This makes Levi raise his gaze at you, a controlled smirk on his face.
"Could've fooled me," he says, before going back to grading. You take your phone and begging scrolling on Twitter. His left hand comes to rest on your ankle.
It doesn't last long, though. Soon enough, you're throwing away your take-out contained and leaving the fork on the sink. You take a quick trip to the bathroom and brush your teeth thoroughly, until there isn't a trace of the soy sauce flavour on your tongue. When you're done, you take an extra moment to look at your toothbrush next to Levi's. His has a small plastic cap for extra protection, creating a contrast with yours, sparkling orange with some bend bristles. You gaze at your reflection in the mirror for a few moments, taking the time to brush away some stray hairs with your fingers. You bite down your lips to make it plumper and redder and pinch your cheeks to try and get the same result. When you're content with the result, you make your way towards Levi again, his eyes still fixed on the papers on his lap.
"How many do you have left?" you ask. His pen stops for a moment.
"A few," he says, as casually as he can for a man who didn't even check how many papers he hadn't read yet.
His answer, however, draws a grin upon your face. Carefully, you take the stack of papers and leave them on the nearest coffee table. Levi doesn't move, just looks at you with an unamused face that could've made anyone else step back-- but not you. Instead, you comfortably sat on his lap, your legs at each side of his hips.
"I need to finish those for tomorrow," Levi says, his hands sliding up your thighs.

I want to talk about the harm caused by trying to police AI in creative communities, because things are getting really toxic. For the record, I dislike generative AI too. I think it’s built on theft and goes against the point of human expression. But turning online spaces into places where everyone is watched just to catch 'AI users' is hurting marginalized creators. Before you accuse someone based on a gut feeling or an unreliable detector, remember this: What people call AI 'tells' often look a lot like standard ESL writing. Non-native English speakers usually use structured, precise grammar or stick to common transitions because that’s how they learn the language. Accusing someone of using AI just because their writing sounds 'too clean' or 'formulaic' is often just xenophobia. This also hurts neurodivergent or hyper-focused writers. Many writers on the spectrum have their own structured styles, or they can write a lot in a short time. Calling high productivity or a different writing style 'robotic' pushes away the very people who make fan spaces interesting.
The 'witch hunt' mindset does real damage. A community can handle a few cases of bad, AI-generated text getting through. What it can’t handle is a place where creators are too scared to post because a few loud voices are ready to attack them over a simple sentence.
AI models are trained on very structured, perfect grammar. So when a real person uses precise words, common transitions like 'Furthermore' or 'It is important to note,' or textbook grammar, detectors often say it’s AI. There’s a real ESL bias: studies show non-native English speakers get falsely accused much more often. Because ESL writers use standard words and sentence structures, detectors often flag their real work as robotic. One Stanford study found that 61% of essays written by international students were wrongly flagged as AI by at least one detector.
I want to end with one last message: stop trying to act like a digital cop. If you don’t like something, just move on. Unless someone openly says they used Gen AI, forcing people to defend themselves in public is ruining the spaces we’re trying to protect.
