can we talk about the lack of indigenous representation in media for a second? i have NEVER seen a native person simply existing in a mainstream movie, tv show or book without their “native-ness” serving the plot in some way, and often the culture is misrepresented even then. i’m sorry but if you’re writing a story that takes place in a canadian high school do NOT tell me that not a single character is native. yes so glad we get representation for lgbtqia+, poc, disabilities, and more, but this is just another from of indigenous erasure. residential schools weren’t completely closed until 1997 in canada and until around 2008 in the us. this is RECENT history babes. let us have our culture represented naturally and casually as we exist in this current world, not just to push a plot point on nature.
