so what if the reason Henry kidnapped kids wasn't to destroy the world but to 'save' the kids from the evil adults.

Henry probably hated adults because he parents never understood him and the adults in the lab used him as research and where cruel towards him.

So he wanted to kidnap kids and 'help' them by 'saving' them from the mean adults. So he took Will. BUT big problem Will doesn't hate adults at least he doesn't hate Joyce. So Will didn't believe Henry when he said he was 'saving' him.

Will escaped (but Henry actually let him go after leaving some of himself behind to use for later) flash forward to season 5.

Will starts playing a special game with the 7 year old holly wheeler (her being seven works better and is actually canon) only its not will its Henry possessing Will. Holly starts getting all her friends involved in her and Will's special game.

Slowly will (Henry possessed Will) starts turning the kids on adults he starts using his powers and posses and molding they're young minds till eventually he gets them all to join him in dimension X.

Meanwhile Will starts feeling weird his necks ALWAYS itchy and he starts forgetting big parts of time only he doesn't say anything so to not burden anyone (very in character of him)

Than everyone realizes what's happen after will lets slip to mike how bad he's been feeling shortly after holly and all the other Hawkins kids disappear (byler moment) and mike cracks what happens

Than when they all go to dimension X they can't fight Becomes army because its a bunch of possessed children who are innocent.

I think everyone fighting a group possessed children who gained powers and are part of a cult seeking up on people and doing a villain with a back story that's not a load of bull while trying not to hurt the children (which adds emotion conflict especially if some of them get hurt) is a whole lot better than fighting a giant spider thing that's barley scary in ten minutes.

The characters immediately assume that Mr. Whatsit is Henry, but the twist is that Henry is doing it physically THROUGH Will. As in, Will is being intermittently possessed and seeking out these kids, and doesn't realize it. He experiences time loss and repeatedly ends up in places not knowing how he got there but chalks it up to sleep deprivation due to nightmares and is too afraid of seeming like a burden to mention it to anyone.

Holly is then the first victim because she lives under the same roof as Will, making her the closest target. Will and Holly get close over the 18 months of living together and regularly spend time playing games alone, where Henry takes the opportunity to take over. Holly thinks that these moments where Will introduces himself as Mr. Whatsit (he doesn't give the name Henry because why tf would he do that) is some sort of roleplay game, so she plays along and invites her friends to join in on the "game," expanding Henry's pool of victims (ig in this world Derek is either a friend or learns about her "game" and makes fun of it). Holly (and the other kids) think it's a fun secret between her and Will, so she doesn't tell anyone that Mr. Whatsit is Will. It's not until they capture Derek to protect him and he refers to Will as Mr. Whatsit that the pieces start to fall into place, and Will slowly regains memories of what Henry made him do.

The kids, once captured by Henry, under hive mind influence, don't notice that Mr. Whatsit doesn't look like Will until Holly runs into Max and Max helps her see that Mr. Whatsit isn't a friend at all.
