not to be that person but the "I understood that reference" line from steve in the avengers is actually so heartbreaking. like yeah itβs played for laughs, haha man out of time, etc. but you know he was just so genuinely excited to recognize literally anything after waking up in a completely unfamiliar world.
he hears βflying monkeysβ and itβs like a light goes on. finally, finally something he gets and he says it out loud like βI UNDERSTOOD THAT REFERENCE :Dβ all proud and hopeful and trying to connect and the others just look at him like ?? okay dude ??

Tbh I really feel for Steve. I mean, at this point in time:
he only recently woke up in a world so different from the one he knew;
he's struggling to adjust to this huge change with basically no help (I think canon says that all they did after thawing him, was send him off to a cabin somewhere? on his own? for like a month? like that was going to help him come to terms with this reality he was brought into, when he never expected to wake up again??);
he has literally no friends;
he doesn't know for sure that he can trust anyone around him;
he's just been recruited to be used as a pawn and he doesn't really get much of a say in that (history repeating itself much?).
I feel like it's twice as hard for him to create even the tiniest genuine connection with people, because he isn't just some random guy from the past: he's Captain fucking America! He was a war hero, he's in history books, people made comics about him, they sublimated him into a symbol, even more so after his heroic "death".
So the people around him (at least the ones who actually know who he is), they tend to see him as Cap the cartoon character, rather than Steve, the human being, the war veteran who lost everything he ever knew and loved. The young man who can never come home, no matter how bad he misses it, because his home simply doesn't exist anymore. But everyone around him seems to forget about that.
Can you imagine how desperately out of place he must feel in most conversations? There's so much he hasn't caught up with yet, in terms of recent history, technology, pop culture and plenty more areas; so many things that everyone else takes for granted and will mention in passing, because surely everyone knows about X thing, right?? And if they don't, well then where have they been living all this time, under a rock???
Imagine walking around and listening to random people talk and not understanding half of what they're saying (what the hell is snapchat, what chat are they snapping? and twitter? youtube, what? what tube?? and what's up with that "i" in front of every "phone" these days anyway?? and why does everyone talk about followers, is there some sort of mass cult at play here or what???), not recognizing any of the celebrity names they're mentioning, having popular references fly over your head and thinking maybe these people must be talking about their loved ones, although some of these stories are crazy, man.
Now, for once he actually recognizes something (!!!!), and it's so adorable the way he gets so excited about it for a moment! The way his face lights up and he just can't help but say it out loud like yes!! Finally!!! Finally he got one reference right!!
(this has nothing to do with anything, but I just now got this image in my head, of Steve accidentally but enthusiastically info-dumping about the Wizard of Oz because he watched it like 10 times when it first came out and he loved it so much, and god I wish he had someone there actually listening to him and encouraging him and letting him go off about his special interests for once sjdhskgdjdmd)
Like, up until a minute ago Steve felt like as much of an outsider as Thor (Thor who, unlike him, has no idea what flying monkeys are!!!), and for a second he gets this little flicker of hope on his face, like maybe- maybe not every single thing in the future has to suck, you know? Maybe not everyone has to think Steve's dumb as a brick just because he missed the last 70 years' worth of mainstream films and music. Maybe he can show these people that he's just a guy, made of flesh and bone and susceptible to cultural influences just like them - and, dare I say, perhaps not entirely alien to such things as hobbies and interests, you know what I mean?
Instead, Steve's enthusiasm is met with either annoyance (zooming in on Tony literally rolling his eyes in the background) or even indifference, because, yes Cap, everybody and their grandma understood that reference, nothing to write home about there, buddy.
I know it's such a tiny moment, but even so, it reminds you of how Steve's struggling to fit into this strange place he landed in, amongst these people he barely knows, and it just makes me so sad for him π₯Ίπ₯Ί Like, he's trying so hard, okay π Don't alienate him, be his friend dammit π
