One of the many mysteries in Madoka Magica gets shown in episode 3, and no, I'm not talking about where Mami's head ends up.

I'm talking about how we get introduced to Kyousuke in the hospital after an accident that destroyed his hands and legs, and in that same episode we get Mami's backstory of losing her parents in an accident. And both moments are ambiguous — the anime doesn't tell us anything about how either accident actually happened. I always found it interesting that both these mysteries get introduced in the same episode, because to me that points to a possible off-screen connection. Which is at least a lot better than the old fan theory that Kyubey caused the car crash — that one's kind of absurd, but it's what a lot of people thought 10 years ago when Madoka was airing.

Here's my thing. We know Mami was in a car crash, and the injuries Kyousuke has going on are exactly the type it'd make sense to get in a car crash. And then there's the moment where Sayaka's walking with Mami and Madoka, thinking about making a wish for someone else, and Kyubey guesses she means Kyousuke — and Mami immediately warns her to be careful, because you only get one wish and you're doomed to a life of fighting witches.

Now most people read that moment as Mami warning Sayaka to think carefully because Mami herself didn't get to — she was about to die when Kyubey found her, no time to decide. And also that she's worried Sayaka's wishing for the wrong reasons. But what if there's a hidden reason — hidden the same way both accidents are mysteriously off-screen? What if Mami gets a little intense there because she knows Kyousuke and his family were somehow involved in the crash that killed her parents and forced her into being a magical girl. Maybe Kyousuke caused it himself.

Either way — if nothing else, episode 3 gives us a connection just by introducing both of these off-screen, car-accident-related moments in the exact same episode. Kyousuke's got car-crash injuries, and Mami was literally shown stuck in a car about to die.

The hands reaching out to each other is a direct visual reference to Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam, the famous Sistine Chapel fresco where God's hand reaches toward Adam's, fingers almost-but-not-quite touching.

Shaft loves dropping classical art references into background shots like this, and it's very much the Shinbo/Gekidan Inu Curry visual style — nothing in a Madoka Magica frame is accidental.

So, what does it mean in the context of Junko and Kazuko drinking together?

The whole power of the original fresco is that the fingers don't touch — there's a gap. Placed behind two old friends drinking and talking about their pasts, it can read as intimacy that's close but never fully articulated: two people reaching toward each other emotionally, sharing history without ever saying everything.

Creation/life-giving. The fresco is literally about the spark of life being passed from one being to another.

Junko is Madoka's mother; Kazuko is her teacher. Between the two of them, these are the two adult women who shaped and "created" who Madoka is. Framing their conversation with a creation image is a nod to that.

Madoka Magica constantly uses religious imagery with a bitter edge — and given where the series goes (Madoka literally becoming a goddess), a Creation of Adam reference hanging over a casual scene early on is the kind of foreshadowing the show loves.

in fact, I once read a reddit post where someone speculated that when they were in college, they experimented on each other while they were exploring things like gender feelings which is an interesting thought and makes the mind go wild with how they might have explored lol

I’ve already talked about Junko maybe being a delinquent in her youth, and Sunny Day Life has her straight‑up admit to Madoka that she was “naughty” when she was younger. If Junko really did have a wild girl phase, it makes sense she’d have friends from that time who stuck around, and Kazuko being the one we see drinking with her at night lines up with that. That hand shot then starts to feel like “these two reached for each other a long time ago, in a different way, and they’re still connected now,” even if the anime never spells it out with dialogue.
