Iāve always wanted to give a character a magic gun that can fire more rounds than what gets loaded into it. Like a seven-shot revolver, or something. Just so I can have one of those scenes where they fire a full clip, the villain gets out of cover and starts a monologue about how heāsĀ ācounted their shotsā and theyāre all out of ammo.
And then...
BANG!

unpopular opinion: mental illness can make people behave in extremely toxic and sometimes even abusive or manipulative ways. relationships and friendships with mentally ill people can be extremely difficult, unpleasant, or even harmful. though this may not be intentional and i have sympathy for those who struggle with this, other people are allowed to remove themselves from your life for their own happiness and sanity. they are not bad people for this. the idea that someone *has* to stay with you while you heal or help fix you is wrong, people are allowed to prioritise themselves. itās on you to seek therapy and heal. being mentally ill doesnāt give you a pass to behave in toxic ways and hurt others.
This map took me by far the longest to make. The party journeys to an underground garden to rescue their benefactor from a masked madman. Wonāt actually be in the campaign for quite a few sessions to come, but the eventual battle will be a crucial one.
So I found out I have MS earlier this year. Multiple Sclerosis for those who donāt know. Itās a chronic, incurable illness caused by your bodyās own immune system attacking the protective sheath around your nerves. Symptoms include weakness, numbness, loss of mobility, fatigue, vision problems, acute pain, depression, etc. Not particularly fun, to say the least.
Getting a chronic illness didnāt exactly inspire me to be productive for a long while. But Iām back now, and hopefully for the future. Iāll try to post stories and writing ideas, and anything else that might be on my mind. Feel free to say hi. Iād love to meet new and old people alike.

Ambush on the Broken Road! The party was attacked by a host of savage apes that leapt from the rocks above and crashed down into their column. The first combat encounter of The Drowned City, a homebrew campaign Iām running.
so tired of this trope that vampires complain & correct history books like āno I was there hereās what really happened!ā
buddy most of us couldnāt write a history book on the shit that happened this month and we get to see it unfold live on tv. thereās no way your 500-year-old plebian ass was on the front lines of the Shang Dynasty political scene and can remember it with any degree of accuracy. you were probably stuck in a back corner of the world herding goats anyway, your anemic dumbass can buzz off
Vampires who base all their political opinions on things that happened hundreds of years ago because they have literally no understanding of present-day society.
āOf course I voted Republican, you bigot, what, do you support slavery or something?ā
Authorās Note: This is the prologue of a story Iāve been considering writing, about a group of superpowered kids in a school for juvenile delinquents. Havenāt settled on a title yet for the work, but Iāll think of something. Reblog or comment if you want, Iād love to hear your thoughts. :)

Breathe, Isabelle. Breathe. Are you ready? The ring in her hand felt like a thousand pounds. Backstage, behind heavy cloth curtains, Isabelle pressed her forehead against the cool metal of nearby scaffolding. Breathe. You can do this.
Onstage, the crowd had begun to roar. āSTARLIGHT!ā The air trembled as twenty thousand voices cheered in unison. The scaffolding shook around Isabelle and she pulled herself upright, trying to control her breathing, trying not to look like the mess she knew she was. Were the staff thinking about her right now? The lighting technicians manning the spotlights. The sound engineers hurrying to make their last-minute checks on Vajoy Stadiumās speaker system. What did they think of the stranger in front of them, the small woman in her disheveled pantsuit, hyperventilating in a corner as she cradled a diamond ring in her hands?
Breathe.
But the crowd would not let her. Their cheers grew louder and louder, heralding his arrival. It would not before sheād have to answer him.
āSTARLIGHT!ā
āSTARLIGHT!ā
What do I say? The obvious answer was yes, Isabelle knew. āYes, Solomon Jones, yes. I love you, Iāve loved you since we met eight years ago, Iāve loved you no matter how long you were away, I want to go on loving you for the rest of our livesā. But it wasnāt just Solomon Jones she would be answering to. It would be him.
āSTARLIGHT!ā
āIsabelle, heāll be here in five.ā One of the technicians was looking at her, a sympathetic smile on her lips. āAre you going out to see him?ā
Isabelle did not respond. She could see the confusion in the womanās eyes. Why are you anxious? they seemed to say. This should be the happiest day of your life. Though Isabelle had not shown the ring to anyone backstage, they had figured things out by themselves. And they all knew who she was, theyād known about her for years. Isabelle wondered if the technician was jealous; there were women, probably even some men, who might kill to be in her position. To be Solomon Jonesāsāno, to be his girlfriend. To see a side of him nobody else did. If only they knew how hard it was.
That was the problem, wasnāt it, that she got to see both sides. To know Solomon when he was vulnerable, when he was insecure, and to see him as the people of Panoply saw him. She would be marrying a man who might not come home one day, who would always have secrets from her, who was so great and important she felt small even when standing in his shadow. You want this, Isabelle, I know you do. Itās justā
āSTARLIGHT!ā
āāso scary. What if someone uses you to get to him? What if people hate you? What if he changes his mind?ā It had been almost four days since Solomon had asked, four days since Isabelle had spoken to him in person. He said heād wanted to give her time to think over the question, but she knew him well enough to see that for the lie it was. He was busy with work. Something more important than me.
Could she be angry with that? After all, it wasnāt deadlines or meetings that kept her bed cold and her dinners lonely. It was mob bosses and human traffickers and Gifted psychopaths. It was hero work that kept Solomon Jones away, kept him secretive and worried and unhappy, even when proposing to his one true love. Could I live with a man like that?
The crowdās chanting had descended into discordant cheers. Isabelle pushed her way past the technician and peered out through a crack in the curtains. The stage was still empty, but the stadium roof was open. The crowds were hard to make out against the harsh stage lights, but to Isabelle the stadium looked packed. Twenty thousand people would see her when she stepped out. Twenty thousand people would hear her answer to Solomonās proposal.
As Isabelle peered upwards, she saw the night sky was cloudless. A few dozen stars blinked at her, bright enough to be seen through Panoplyās smog. One star was brighter than the others, its light fast approaching. Starlight.
āHey,ā the technician said again, trying to get Isabelleās attention. āI need a decision soon; weāll have to get you fitted with a mic if youāre going out.ā
Isabelleās reply was drowned out by the crowd. Theyād spotted him. Instead, she nodded, her body limp as the technician ran to get the necessary equipment. I donāt have to answer onstage, but I want to see him. I need to make sure heās okay.
āSTARLIGHT!ā
āSTARLIGHT!ā
āSTARLIGHT!ā
Isabelle could feel her hearing go with each successive intonation. Her body felt light; she wished she could close her eyes and be swept away on the soundwaves. If only the ring were not so heavy in her hands. Breathe, she thought. Breathe. Youāll know what to say when you see him; itās always so much easier when youāre together.
The technician returned, fitting a headset over an unresisting Isabelle. She could feel the stage shake from the crowdās enthusiasm. Heās in the stadium. This is it.
The technician gave a thumbs up and Isabelle hugged her in thanks, before rushing forwards onstage. The ring no longer felt like a thousand pounds; she was caught up in the enthusiasm of the crowd. Behind her even the technician was peeking through the curtains. Everyone wanted to get a good look at the man steadily descending beneath the stadium roof.
āSolomon,ā whispered Isabelle, near-blinded by the lights and deafened by the crowd. There he was, her Solomon, a radiant sun floating above the stage. His golden cape flapping despite the lack of wind, his pitch-black uniform lit up with a thousand blinking lights, his eyes burning as daylight escaped from his smooth dark skin. The crowd was still chanting, and Isabelle could not help but join in. Starlight. Starlight. Captain Starlight.
The greatest hero in Panoplyās history. The man who had defeated the genocidal Endbringer and saved the city from Mediumās rampage. The man who had time for everyone, who talked people from jumping off rooftops and foiled bank robberies and saved kittens trapped in trees. The man who had devoted his life to the city, whose radiant Gift inspired tolerance, whose heroics had paved an end to violent vigilantism, the eternal protector of Panoply whoā
āgrew brighter by the minute, near-invisible now under a sphere of light. His hands by his sides, his blazing eyes looking forwards, his perfect skin swelling outwards as the glow grew and grew. Heās not okay, Isabelle thought, as Solomon paused in midair and her nervousness returned tenfold. Something is wrong. Something is very wrong. She dropped the ring to the ground, discarding its weight, screaming against the roar of the crowd, screaming for Solomon to look at her.
And for a moment, he did, locking those burning white eyes with the woman who would be his wife. But in the next moment, he was gone, they were all gone, disappeared in a flash of light. For a brief second Panoply was lit by a midnight sun, bathing the entire city in premature dawn. When it winked out, darkness returned, but where Vajoy Stadium once stood only a crater remained.
Ā For the next month the papers did nothing but talk about the night Captain Starlight went supernova, taking twenty thousand people with him. There was postulations and outrage and grieving disbelief. But for Naomi Lee, who saw Vajoy Stadium consumed from her balcony window, there was only the slow and painful realization that her parents would not be coming home.
Hi everyone!! Hereās an excerpt from a new WIP that Iām working on called the Clock Creatures (TCC). Iām not going to tell you anything about it just yet, as I want this passage to speak for itself ā but I really hope you enjoy it!!
(Also thank you so so much to @jessāwrites, @mizzyplatinum, and @aurikhai for proofreading this for me! <33)
āYou get used to it.ā The dark-haired boy crouches down next to me, speaking in a way that suggests he has to do this a lot.
Heās a liar. Iāll never get used to it ā he knows that. But heās telling me I will, like itās clear heās told so many people. I can tell by his expression: itās stale. His smile is a little too sincere. His words hit me just like it does, though not, perhaps, as loud.
The noise I can deal with. But the constant rattling of the room, the shaking of my soul ā thatās something different. I canāt quite remember pain, but I am certain that this hurts.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Itās like my pulse has left my body. It roars in my ears as if itās grown stronger, escaped me. As if itās seeking its revenge. Every second, the world convulses. Every second, I can hear it scream. Iāve never experienced an earthquake, but I imagine that it feels like this.
My knuckles try to grip the floor, but they fail and scrape against it. My ears try to focus on that, instead ā to the tearing of skin. To the flow of blood. No chance. Thereās only the pounding of my heart that now surrounds me: the repugnant shaking of my world that will not cease. Every second, without fail, I fall.
Iām sat on the floor with my head bowed and my knees drawn to my chest. I think ā at the very least ā that some centuries have passed. I have no shoes. My feet are cold, so I sit on them, curled up against the chilly, wooden floor.
1. You are responsible for your own media experience.Ā
2. There is such a thing as a healthy level of avoidance towards topics that make you feel unwell or even (in a real-life clinical definition of the term) trigger you - but you are the one to actively take care of what you view.
3. Avoiding does not mean policing others.
4. You have no right to tell artists to censor themselves - you may criticize what others do, you may dislike it, thatās fine - but actively asking for censorship when you could easily unfollow or block a person just makes you look incompetent in your use of the internet.
5. Do not give people on tumblr or /any/ website the responsibility for your emotional well-being. Because these people do not even know you so no, you have no right to ask them to take care of you.
6. Content creators are not your parents and owe you nothing, not even a breakdown on why their content isnāt problematic. You donāt get to demand a dissertation denouncing any and everything unhealthy in a piece you donāt like. Move on.
7. Your opinion isnāt special and you donāt represent anyone besides yourself. Likewise, if someone disagrees with you that is not some guaranteed proof of their race/gender/sexual orientation. In real life these groups are not hive minds who all think alike.

Tumblr -Ā We need more healthy male friendships in media. Men who are emotional with each other and do things together and have positive platonic bonds.
Also Tumblr -Ā Woah there, two male characters are showing emotion around each other and have a healthy close friendship? I ship them. Theyāre gay. Definitely gay. Thereās no other explanation for this but gay.
I was tagged byĀ @aurikhai on this and Iām finally getting around to doing it. The game is to post the first paragraph/paragraphs of something you have not shared yet and then tag other people:
The Dusk Patrol: Chapter 9
The gravel rocks of the parking lot rumbled and churned as the jeep turned in off the empty road. Finding a spot next to a dirt-streaked cruiser, the jeep drove forwards, slotting itself between the cruiser and a battered wooden fence. After a moment of idling its engines fell silent and its doors opened. Dusk Patrol officer Sandra Elwood, just two weeks from promotion, got out of the jeep and stretched her legs. The sun beat down on her tan uniform, shadows running across her face from the wide brim of her hat. āCome on out,ā she called, looking back at the jeep. āCase wonāt solve itself.ā
The jeepās doors opened and four cadets emerged from within, squinting and cursing in the blinding sun. āWhat is this weather?ā Rohan Chopra grumbled, his eyes tearing. āIām sweating like a pig.ā
āSuits you,ā Harriet Hanzo smirked, brushing invisible motes of dust from her uniform. Behind her dark sunglasses she surveyed the squat building at the end of the lot with contempt. āWhat a dump.ā
Honestly, I think about this a lot sometimes. But does anyone else have a repetitive notion throughout their writings?
Mine is the fact that my characters often donāt have parents or have bad relationships with their parents. Or with at least one parent. And I have a hard time debating whether this is because of my own personal relationship with my parents.
For me, I feel like I go the absent/dead/abusive father route fairly often. Like you, it likely stems from real life experience. My own father was not a good person and I havenāt seen him in nearly two decades (and donāt plan to see him ever again.) Iām trying to break out of that and create better and more likeable dads.
This is a given after my last habit, but nearly every family Iāve ever written has been matriarchal, with a badass mother and grandmother. (And yes, my mom and grandma are/were pretty damn epic if I do say so myself. #Mamaās Girl )
Iād like to see what habits other writers tend to fall back on, so Ima tag all of you.

(And hey, if youād like to be in my random things tag list or would like not to be in it, let me know! <3 )
Thanks for the tag, itās an interesting question.Ā
Looking back at my earliest works, there was a focus on family dynamics. There was a certain amount of self-insertion, not gonna lie. There was a power struggle in my head in my teens; a lot of resentment, anger and feelings of parental abandonment despite having two parents at home. The result was a lot of toxic characters and situations that Iām absolutely not proud of but need to own. They helped me understand the issues and how to cancel my subscription.
The heroes of those early stories were young women, often conned or trapped into their circumstances, resorting to any and all means necessary - not to break out of the cycle, but to succeed in their roles within that social structure. The end was very bleak, no matter how you cut it. Conformity despite rebellion that turned them into monsters in their own right. Still, there was a sense of power there: the women knew what they were doing and took ownership, and accepted their fates with dignity.Ā
Late teens and young adult years saw the introduction of male heroes, though there was a theme with them as well. Loving and compassionate, they tended to be naive and too forgiving of toxic in their lives. The men and women of this time had the first signs of rebellion against the earlier logic. Gone were the social structures - they were the enemies in these tales - and so were the parents. A study of if characters were truly better without them. The endings were better - at least they were free - but it was a dead end further down the road.
Thank you for the tag, this is indeed something to think about.
My earliest works had self-inserts due to my teenager brain and my need to not feel like a looser. That improved thank to my best friend and a giant boost of confidence from her.Ā
I havenāt written for almost six years before I started again this past November. But before that I did, and still do, RP and looking at my characters, Iāve got: a predominance of male characters, trauma or some sort of mental health issue.Ā
I am working on the first one, although I still feel like I have better control over my male characters than the female ones. The trauma/mental health stuff, I still do it and frankly, I like using it. Iāve always liked psychology, but did not pursue it in college. Which I still regret in a way. By writing about my charactersā mental health it gives me the opportunity to learn psychology on my own. I am not saying I am an autodidact in the field, but I want to go towards that. The trauma bit helped me realize some of my own fears and understand myself better so I am going to keep exploring that are as well.Ā Ā
Another pattern is tight friendships which recently evolved to found families. Until high school I didnāt have close friends, or friendships that lasted for more than a couple of years. Then my now best friend appeared and we are tight knit, solid and I love that!Ā
Can I just ā¦. sign this? I basically got everything you mentioned. This is kind of creepy and really awesome at the same time!
I scratched the self inserts from my earliest works, though. And I started out writing fanfiction with many, many slow burns. Still do, actually. For me itās important that whenever I insert a relationship, it needs to be built naturally, no āomg heās hotā at first sight and then jumping to the conclusion that this must be true love. So yeah, slow burns are always recurring.
Also my cast usually is, whether in fanfic or original work, a Bunch Of Idiots. Iām drawn to a bunch of characters who appear to share one brain cell and nothing more. On that note, I always have some complicated character relationships.
And something else each and every one of my works has is a āhome baseā. A home which remains still standing, something where the characters can relax, can breathe in between Horrific Plot Points, develop relationships ⦠think Normandy (Mass Effect) or the villa Auditore (Assassinās Creed). I think thatās because I never really had a place to call home which actually felt like home, so thatās why Iām giving one to my characters. Even if itās just a glorified cardboard box they share with their friends, they got a home.
What about you guys? @tayluinwrites @farrradays @cawolters
Thanks for the tag, hmm, this is something Iāve tried to analyze a bunch of times.
Complicated parents, distant siblings, dynamic relationships āall that is bits and pieces from my real life, and I tend to explore it over and over.
Partly to decipher it, partly to encapture it.
But. The themes like: nature, dreams, moral, religion, mortality and the concept of fate, is more my philosopical mind taking a stroll along the pages.
I also like my characters to discover certain hidden shards within themselves, an emotion or a broken memory, and give them that falling feeling of āeurekaā, that pushes them closer to either doom or retribution.
Lastly, I think itās always natural for the creator to create the same piece, again and again, with different tools, in different settings.
I find myself reaching for the same words and draw the same lines āalmost manically. And I think itās an artistic quest to make our inner thoughts known in the most precise way. And we have to do it over and over, to get it right.
The journey takes difirent routes, over the mountains or below the ocean, but the final destination never truly change: do you understand what Iām trying to tell you?
So many great insights and reflections from writers here! @cawolters I think youāve captured that concept in such brilliant intensity.Ā
I find that in my stories, I see a lot of:Ā
Girls who will not be told how to be girls.Ā
Love is love is love is love, letās normalize all the love.Ā
Explorations of unhealthy vs. healthy romantic relationships.Ā
Many different ways of communicating between people, all of which is imbued with meaning (pace, interruptions, repetitions, body language, posture, motion, etc.)Ā
Coming to terms with parts of yourself you might not want to deal with, but probably should. Self-actualization is exhausting.Ā Ā
@madammuffinsĀ @mvcreates @elizabethsyson @kaatibaā Iām interested in your take on this!Ā
Thanks for the tag @vhum! This whole discussion is very cool. For myself, I tend to write a lot of:
monstrous/strange women
soft, gentle, kind, big men
non-verbal communicationāa lot of sitting next to each other quietly, gentle comforting touches, attentive listening. basically the things i want and value in my relationships
anger! different types of anger displayed in different ways, stemming from different reasons, dealt with differently depending on the character or situation! i was a really angry kid growing up, and some of that anger feels like it never went away and just turnedā¦frenetic, or sad. so i like to explore it. itās part catharsis, part curiosity, part me just wanting to explore traits that seem inherently negative but donāt have to be. sometimes anger is good and healthyĀ
jealousy. i dont like being a jealous person but i am, and i like to explore it for the same reasons i like to explore anger. i suppose these are larger themes but they crop up in uh. almost everything i write.
what about you guys @the-ichor-of-ruination, @the-real-rg, @vviciously, @hyba, @farrradays, @tracle0, @pinespittinink, @nectareouswrites, @writing-and-nutmeg?
no parents present/mentioned, or if they are, thereās usually only on the child is close with
at least one depressed-on-main-but-working-towards-recovery character
i have a tendency to use death to end a lot of 1st books. At least three 1st books i have planned right now end with the death of a prominent character, Iām trying to change that though haha, mix it up a bit
queer relationships and characters. I donāt see enough of them in mainstream media, and if thereās one thing I know how to write itās an awkward & bumbling wlw (spoilers: its because I am one) so fuckĀ yeah Iām going to include them in my wips
i also lovemorallyy grey characters, regardless of whether or not theyāre consideredĀ āgoodā orĀ ābadā, i love exploring motives and backstories that throw everything people have done into question
Iāll tag @i-rove-rock-n-roll @pinespittinink @goose-books @writingwitherebus @thekeyten @pen-and-sword-writing and @capricious-writes!
Oh Iām so down for this, because Iāve been musing about this exact thing lately.
Some of the recurring elements in my stories areā¦
War is Hell. I had it pounded into my head at a very early age by my hippie father that the government was a collective of lying, mass murdering demagogues who stoke the fears of the foreign boogeyman in order to manipulate mostly well meaning men and women into selling their bodies and souls to the state, securing the military industrial complex a slew of pawns in the game of western imperialism. The few times Iāve written about war or battle Iāve always made it clear that war isnāt noble or courageous, but a dirty, soul annihilating ritual that should be avoided at all costs.
Existentialism Vs Nihilism. This can also cross over into Hope Vs Despair, Idealism Vs cynicism, or Empathy Vs Apathy. Not to come off sounding like Iāve got a tin foil hat on here, but I legitimately believe the last round of millennials, I.e. my demographic, for the most part became addicted to apathy and cynicism due to many factors, but seeing how this is a discussion about writing Iāll stick to examining the media me and others grew up on. Weāre what youād call the āSouth Park Generation,ā who grew up on media that taught us that nothing matters, everyone is stupid for caring, and the only logical thing to do is to look out for yourself, which usually meant indulging any dark desire you had, others be damned.
Hereās the thing, Iām a firm believer in lifeās inharent meaningless. I personally think the notion that thereās a built in plan for us and this chaotic shit show we call reality to be laughable at best, and itās because of that I feel we, as thinking, feeling agents, have absolutely NO RIGHT to stand by and be apathetic. We should all give our lives the meaning we personally want them to have, and go out of our way to be kind and love each other BECAUSE the universe isnāt kind to us. Full offense, I see cynicism and apathy as a cowards way out of a bad situation, and itās this battle thatās a central theme of most of my storytelling. This trope is something I know for certain I can trace back to a lot of dark shit thatās happened in my past.
Female Heroes. As far as I can remember Iāve tended to write predominantly female centric stories. The majority of my main characters Iāve created over the years are women whoās story arcs arenāt linked to men or sexual trauma, who arenāt perfect saints but also arenāt mean spirited automatons who superficially play the progressive game while predominantly acting as thinly veiled male centric fantasies.
Balls to the wall Villains. I absolutely refuse to write villains who wonāt make you question your life choices, morality, and in some cases the nature of reality itself. Give me bad guys who said fuck all to the ātragic backstoryā thing and are just fundamentally skewed in their thinking and not realize it, Give me a villainous who isnāt a āfemme fetaleā but a Baroness who likes to cut people in half with a giant claymore she calls āThe Fucker.ā Give me Demon Kings who arenāt just āLucifer Expy #234,789,897,ā but a complex being who has surprisingly āhumanā motivations for their actions that isnāt āGodās muh daddy an I hate him šæā
Erebus brand humor. Over the years Iāve developed a sense of humor that almost always makes its way into my stories in some form no matter how dark it is. The best way I can describe it is āTerry Pratchet meets The Coen Brothers.ā My protagonists hardly take themselves seriously, and those who think theyāre the antihero in a generic gritty fantasy book ultimately get knocked on their ass until they learn to lighten up.
Strong Woman raises/mentors Kid. Only recently have I realized that Iām fond of recycling the notion of an older, wiser woman either raising or mentoring a younger person or child. Be it a big sister trying to steer her brother in the right direction while dealing with her own faults, an amoral Demon debt collector adopting an orphan as her āpup,ā or the conflicted Lawyer of a vampiric art dealer who would kill for her stepson.
The End of the Fucking World. I donāt know if itās due to playing Majoraās Mask and watching Neon Genesis Evangelion at a very sensitive time in my life, but ever since i started writing over a decade ago one core concept Iāve always come back to eventually was that of the apocalypse. Iām quite fond of having the end of the world or the threat of such an event act as a backdrop for many stories.
God. Iām blaming Evangelion again for this one, but I have some pretty strong opinions about the nature of reality and how a supreme āGodā or something comparable too it would logically behave or act. The nature of reality and itās hypothetical ultimate creator(s) has been a topic Iāve been fascinated in exploring since early on in my writing journey.
Swords & Swordplay. Iāll use any excuse I can get to shoehorn in a bladed weapon of some kind. Not Sorry
Iāll tag @mvcreates, @bookenders, @radley-writes, @royalbounties, @writeness, @metaphors-and-melodrama, and @rosella1356. Have fun dudes.
This is absolutely fascinating. I love hearing writers talk about their work like this.
[There was a tag game going around a while ago aboutĀ āHow to Tell Youāre in A(n) ___ Novelā that was a fun and eye-opening venture, too.]
I actually had to do this as an assignment in one of my workshops. We had to write up a page of questions that weād hypothetically ask ourselves about our writing. Really made all of us think about what we do and why we do it.
[So I went back and looked this over when I was done and realized it turned into a deep dive into my writing brain, so Iām leaving it as-is because I think it can be kinda interesting to see how a writerās brain works in relation to other aspects of their life. Enjoy my rambles, yāall.]
Iāve always written about lonely people. Always. Probably because I was a kid whose brain worked too fast for the rest of everything to keep up (thanks anxiety, youāve been a real pal all these years). Or because I was bullied. Whatever, Iām a bit of a literary formalist, none of this is exactly necessary. But my lonely people never used to be freed from that loneliness. They were brought under the light, examined, explored, and then passed over before they could get their happy ending, if there was one for them. I have since changed my methods and, while I still write about lonely people, I am no longer a young edgelord who thinks that literary fiction needs to be sadness and despair. Now, my lonely people get the endings they deserve and are happy. And I write more fantasy elements because theyāre fun.
I hate writing dialogue. No, scratch that, I donāt hate it. Iām afraid of it. The question I asked my hypothetical self for that assignment is as follows: āWhat is a writerās greatest fear? Not being believed? Or being believed too much?ā This was right after I asked about whatās so scary about dialogue, but I think I hit the nail on the head. I have this thing about dialogue not because itās hard (because it is), but because I have this irrational fear that my characters wonāt be believed as people.Ā
I do see some patterns in my writing, but not as bold as some of the patterns mentioned before.Ā
Names are usually a big deal in my stories. I grew up with a unique name (to say the least), and most of my characters seem to have a weird relationship with their names.Ā
I use first person POV always - I just canāt seem to write something in the second or third person. I guess itās because I really need to be in control of what my characters and readers know.Ā
Good relationships with parents are a must. My parents and I (luckily) have an incredible relationship, and itās a bit difficult for me to write about characters with bad relationships with their parents.Ā
Usually, some sort of body insecurity, mainly because itās a thing I struggled with most of my life.Ā
I donāt think I insert myself, at least not as a whole character. I do sprinkle my personality over my characters in a (hopefully) subtle way.Ā
Iāll tag @kidsarentallwrite @thel3tterm and @bysombreseas :)Ā
This is a really interesting thread, itās neat to see all the different patterns writers get into. Also, @azawrites, thanks for the tag!
I have a few patterns that I tend to have in stories I have written/conceptualized:
Really Flawed Protagonists: Pretty much every story Iāve written has a main character who has a number of traits that veer into the moral grey. My current protagonist is insecure, self-destructive, increasingly desensitized to violence. A prior one was incredibly cowardly. Another was really bitter about her lot in life and lacked sympathy for bad things that happened to other people.
Depression: Probably because Iām depressed, but I often have at least one major character who has a great deal of sadness and melancholy about their life. They sort of veer between being protagonists and villains, depending on the work, though their depression inevitably influences their actions in the story.
Villains Outclassing Heroes: Pretty much everything Iāve written has villains who are way stronger than the heroes they are fighting. Whether it be wealth or intellect, or just sheet unbeatable strength. I like the idea of heroes having to work for their victory, rather than them being on level with their antagonists. Consequently, a lot of fights are won by heroes outsmarting more powerful enemies, or having some furious fight for their life that they barely win by exploiting a weakness (e.g, unbalancing a massive demon enough that it falls onto a spiked fence).

A few weeks back I was watching Aliens, and it got me thinking. So look at this lady below, Vasquez.Ā
Why canāt we have more female characters like this in action movies? Actresses who actually look the part of the strong character that theyāre playing. There was Charlize Theron, as Furiosa, and every once in a while we get a horror film that isnāt afraid to make a female character bleed or sweat, but itās thereās surprisingly little of it in cinema.
So, advice for upcoming directors on tough women, just a collection of things that annoy me whenever I see them in film:
- Stop making actresses look amazing in situations where the character would look terrible. I keep watching old Hunger Games clips and it fascinates me how their idea of Katniss in the Games, where she has basically no hygienic supplies and limited food and water, is Jennifer Lawrence with slightly damp hair.Ā
- If you want to show that your female character got injured, itās okay to give her deep scratches, or a cut, or a bruise or something noticeable. Dabbing a little bit of blueberry jam under Brie Larsenās nose does not tell me Captain Marvel just took a serious blow. If youāre going to half-ass it, donāt bother.
- If you want to cast stick-thin models to play assassins who can throw around men twice their size, at least cast people who can fight, or play a convincing killer. Luc Besson is by far the worst offender of this, but there are others. Also is it really necessary to sex them all up?
- Writing a woman with aĀ ātoughā,Ā āstrongā backstory, like, say, an ex-criminal, or a mercenary, requires her to actually act like a criminal/mercenary. Take Vasquez, who is basically one of the guys with her male soldier buddies. I find it very weird when a writerās idea of a strong woman is someone who kicks butt until a man comes along, and then sheās back to crying and being helpless again.Ā
I have other issues, for sure, this is just the first four I could think of off the top of my head. Anyone have recommendations for movies/shows with properly done tough women?

Listed below are a few things I do to make myself write (and enjoy it). this is how I wrote 15k words in a week and a half:
Sprints: sprints are basically a fun way to write a lot in a very short time. You set your timer for a short period of time youād like to write (I like 10-15 minutes) and just write as much as possible for that amount of time. I also like to see my progress, I sometimes write 500 words, sometimes 100 words, itās a great way to get to know your writing habits.
Compitition: I like doing the sprints with other people, this way I know how fast other people work. Iām a very competitive person, so if someone wrote more than me, Iāll keep writing until Iāll reach them. You can do that with sprints, or with friends (seeing who will reach a certain goal first)
Hints: this is kinda weird, but I do it constantly. I have littleĀ āhintsā of my project laid all over my house. Little drawings of my ocs, my own quotes, the name of my novel. For example, my bio on Instagram is a quote from my novel; no one knows but me. Itās a small reminder that of your project everywhere you go.Ā
Force: force yourself to write for a while. make yourself write, and youāll be so invested in your own little world to stop. Iāve done this many times, and ended up writing 2,000 words a day. It really reminds you of why you started writing.Ā
Imagination: I constantly imagine my novel (you know, the product). I can imagine exactly how the front would look, I can imagine my friends and family reading it, I can imagine myself signing it, I can imagine people on Tumblr writing about it. Itās your imagination, be wild, dream about your novel! This is SUPER MOTIVATING.Ā
