y'okay can we stop pretending yet. like can we all acknowledge that eating disorders are chic again, and it's going to kill someone.
and like. do we have to keep gently phrasing things to protect naturally-thin people's feelings. in my life it has never been fashionable to be fat. "fat" is still a bad word. there has never been institutional power pushing people to gain weight; no trillion-dollar industry to "fix" skinny people. a larger body type has never been over-represented in models, influencers, celebrities. sure, people might say "i'm worried for your health," but they do it with respect and gentleness, like they're talking to a scared deer.
every single fucking time i talk about this, i have to be so careful with what i say, in case i offend even one skinny person. it is just true that skinny people have social capital across many cultures. there is a reason you almost never hear someone say "i wish i was fat," but you will constantly see people say "I wish i was thin." and yet inevitably some skinny person will tell me: i thought you wanted body positivity. it is the same fucking attitude as when a cis man says "when you say men have power, well, i've been bullied for being a man. i thought you believe in mental health awareness. don't you know men have a higher suicide rate?"
two things can be true at once: your experience being bullied for being thin was terrible. and people with larger bodies probably have it worse.
i have been big and small. i know many other people who have been big and small. trust what i'm about to tell you: being small is much easier. the world is kinder to you. people treat you better. honestly, this pattern occurs pretty much regardless of gender - my guy friends have confided that they'd rather be bullied for being thin than be bullied for being fat. if you're skinny, the pressure might be to gain weight, sure, but it's often to do so in a way that keeps you skinny - to gain muscle, specifically.
thinness is seen as innate and natural, genetic. whereas carrying any fat - that is a moral failing. it is assumed to be related to your character, your personality. i have seen people equate it to discipline, to hygiene. that bias is why we need to talk about this.
of course i want nobody to make a comment about anyone's bodies. and i think that hyper-thinness and an obsession with weight loss and a recession and a rise of conservative values... all of this is very fucking concerning. we are watching a return of "pro-ana" content, reframed as choice feminism, "health-conscious" behavior, "looksmaxxing". it's fucking terrifying.
i just realized i havenβt posted any of my 60k cross stitch on here!!
last picture is at 11.2k stitches!!! itβs a custom pattern i made of one of my favorite scenes in crimson peak

β€οΈ + your choice of actor/director!! i wish i had a movie to rec but i don't watch any :'( but i want to hear your thoughts!! always!!!!!!
hiii ali! i appreciate you wanting to hear my thoughts π«ΆπΌπ (its always fun to see your reviews whenever you're on letterboxd hehe)
there's so many people to pick from! but here's a random mix of my favs from some random actors & directors :3 most of these are people i actually actively wanna watch all/most of their work
β‘ audrey hepburn
wait until dark (1967)
how to steal a million (1966)
charade (1963)
some of her others i wanna rewatch & revisit bc it's been years since i saw it and i was a lot younger at the time when i did, like breakfast at tiffany's (1961) and the children's hour (1961). kinda wild those are both the same year wow.. but yeah! i feel like i'd get a lot more out of them now (though i do remember the children's hour fondly)
β‘ olivia cooke
sound of metal (2019)
little fish (2020)
the limehouse golem (2016)
little fish is also one i wanna revisit! esp since im into jack o'connell more than i was at the time. and i just feel like its one of those movies that might be better on a rewatch once you have more of a grasp of the plot
β‘ shahrukh khan
om shanti om (2007) β duh! it's literally one of my all time favorite movies of all time π₯°
devdas (2002)
main hoon na (2004)
josh (2000)
raees (2017)
anjaam (1994)
admittedly, a lot of these are nostalgia picks! but i do think they all hold up okay (more or less) πββοΈ there's a number of other classic srk movies i do like, but didn't make the list bc i need to revisit them now that im older (since, as a kid, i was barely comprehending plot sometimes). for example: swades, veer-zaara, dil se, kal ho naa ho (i remember this one well enough but it still needs a rewatch), don 1 & 2, etc. there's also a TON that i haven't seen at all that i really wanna watch but that'd be a pretty exhaustive list so im not gonna get into that rn π
β‘ jack o'connell
sinners (2025)
lady chatterley's lover (2022)
starred up (2013)
little fish (2020)
28 years later: the bone temple (2026)
he's honestly been really good in like everything i've seen him in so far so its a pretty stacked list bc of that. my (relatively) underrated picks i emphasize are def "lady chatterley's lover" (which kickstarted me wanting to get back into reading that book) & "starred up". not a show, but i did also enjoy "the north water" miniseries
β‘ cary grant
bringing up baby (1938)
arsenic and old lace (1944)
charade (1963)
north by northwest (1959)
holiday (1938)
always love me some cary grant! ("bringing up baby", in particular, is a big fav for me) he has so many movies so i don't think i'd watch all of them, but i'd love to watch a good bit of them. so, if anyone has any recs for ones not mentioned here, i'd love to hear them!
β‘ guillermo del toro
pacific rim (2013)
crimson peak (2015)
pan's labyrinth (2006)
gdt's pinocchio (2022)
all these are pretty "basic" faves, i know! but in fairness, a ton of his movies are just iconic and well-known sooo y'know. π of his well-known ones though, the only reason 'the shape of water' isn't here is bc i really need to rewatch it! for a more underrated GDT pick, i'd probably say "the devil's backbone" (2001) πββοΈ i haven't seen his hellboy movies, but i really need to fr!
β‘ park chan-wook
the handmaiden (2016)
oldboy (2003)
lady vengeance (2005)
thirst (2009)
my affinity for some of these varies, but they all leave their impact fr! "the handmaiden" is easily a top fave in general as well as my favorite by him so i highly rec that one πββοΈ almost all of these i need to rewatch (the 'vengeance trilogy' esp) bc i got into it bc of oldboy sooo many years ago in a film class (which was my first foray into PCW's work as it was for many)
movie asks!!! πΏβ¨π€
Rihanna (2014)
