Hi! I know this ask isn’t directed at me, but I have a few of my favourites that I’d love to recommend as an autistic person myself! (as I know you asked specifically for recs and not just a general direction to a tag). They’re in no particular order, but I love each one.
These are my favourite General Audiences fics (with no pairings):
I love this little fic so much, it’s such a good character study and offers an insight into why the Captain always carries his pipe with him. I feel like Sir Bedevere captured how Cap masked his traits when he was alive, and I can relate to the description of sensory sensitivities. Even though the author isn’t autistic, they work with autistic children and had an autistic friend beta-read the fic to ensure its accuracy, and I must say they did an excellent job.
2. Buttons the Ghost Dog by littlemouseinapartyhat (bonus for neurodivergent Thomas)
This fic is super cute. Ghost dog + caring Pat and Cap = the best fic to cheer you up when you’re feeling blue. Cap’s reaction to change is so well written and I love how Pat notices his anxious stimming and helps to reassure him. There’s a beautiful moment somewhere near the end, and it always makes me feel really warm.
These ones are Cap/Havers:
3. Peculiarities by @i-am-deductress
This one’s a bit more angsty, as it depicts Cap having a bad sensory day (we’ve all been there, to various degrees). The beautiful moments here come from the conflict between Cap’s internalised ableism and Haver’s patient understanding and empathy, helping the Captain to realise he’s not a burden and that he wants to help Cap. I love the chapter from Haver’s point of view especially.
4. Operation: Keep Calm and Make the Perfect Christmas by @i-am-deductress
Another one by Deductress, featuring the pair’s growing relationship as they plan to spend Christmas together. Some of the things I struggle with (such as sensory issues with food and not knowing the right amount of kindness to give) are explored here in such a lovely way. The perfect read if you celebrate Christmas to get you in a festive mood.
5. Actuality by @wildenessat221b
I’ve always loved wildenessat221b’s writing, especially when they’re collaborating with waistcoat35. This work is written in such a playful, emotive style that reminds me of the book I’m studying for my English A-Level, but with less swearing and a lot more heart. Cap’s feelings are explored so well and I love the way he interprets his interactions with others. This theatre AU is brilliant and I hope they update soon!
This one has various pairings including PatCap, Cap/Havers and Cap/Humphrey’s Head:
6. Ghostly Musings by littlemouseinapartyhat
These one-shots are so great. I must admit, I haven’t read all of them as PatCap and Cap/Humphrey aren’t really my thing, but some of the chapters really make me Feel Things™. Especially Chapter 2 - some moments are so unexpected and emotional, they sucker-punch you with feelings and make you smile while you cry. I love how littlemouseinapartyhat shows the Captain’s character growth from series 1, and I can’t recommend this enough.
I don’t want to recommend my own fics, but I have written two about autistic Cap myself :) They’re both for General Audiences and have no ships.
Change of Routines by quiet_crisis_in_the_corner (me)
This was my first fic for any fandom ever, and I’m proud of how it turned out. Getting into the Captain’s head was tricky, as was writing his and Alison’s interactions, but I hope I showed how sometimes well-meaning neurotypicals can hurt us when they try to help us. I apologise for how I wrote Julian, and for the frankly unnecessary amount of morse code used here.
Five Times the Captain Gave Someone a Hug, and One Time he Needed One by quiet_crisis_in_the_corner
This is by far my most-read and longest fic, and I’m so pleased people seem to like it. This time I focused on the Captain trying to help the other ghosts, as his caring side isn’t really shown that much in the show (but it is definitely there). I tried to explore how being autistic can make you an outsider, but can also give you an unique way of solving problems and an abundance of empathy. The last chapter was the hardest to write, but I hope I finished it well.
Feel free to reblog with your own autistic ghosts fic recs! we defo need a lot more works in this tag oof
