my dadâalso a writerâcame to visit, and i mentioned that the best thing to come out of the layoff is that iâm writing again. he asked what i was writing about, and i said what i always do: âoh, just fanfic,â which is code for âletâs not look at this too deeply because iâm basically just making action figures kiss in text formâ and âthis awkward follow-up question is exactly why i donât call myself a writer in public.â
he said, âyou have to stop doing that.â
âi know, i know,â because itâs even more embarrassing to be embarrassed about writing fanfic, considering how many posts iâve reblogged in its defense.
but i misunderstood his original question: âfanfic is just the genre. i asked what youâre writing about.âÂ
i did the conversational equivalent of a spinning wheel cursor for at least a minute. i started peeling back the setting and the characters, the fic challenge and the specific episode the story jumps off from, and it was one of those slow-dawning light bulb moments. âiâm writing about loneliness, and who we are in the absence of purpose.â
as, i imagine, are a lot of people right now, who probably also donât realize theyâre writing an existential diary in the guise of getting television characters to fuck.Â
âthatâs what youâre writing. the rest is just how you get there, and how you get it out into the world. was richard iii really about richard the third? would shakespeare have gotten as many people to see it if it wasnât a story they knew?â
so, my friends: what are you writing about?
im going to have a stroke
Instead try⌠Person A: You know⌠the thing Person B: The âthingâ? Person A: Yeah, the thing with the little-! *mutters under their breath* Como es que se llama esa mierda⌠THE FISHING ROD
As someone with multiple bilingual friends where English is not the first language, may I present to you a list of actual incidents I have witnessed:
Forgot a word in Spanish, while speaking Spanish to me, but remembered it in English. Became weirdly quiet as they seemed to lose their entire sense of identity.
Used a literal translation of a Russian idiomatic expression while speaking English. He actually does this quite regularly, because he somehow genuinely forgets which idioms belong to which language. It usually takes a minute of everyone staring at him in confused silence before he says ââŚ.AhâŚ.. that must be a Russian one thenâŚ.â
Had to count backwards for something. Could not count backwards in English. Counted backwards in French under her breath until she got to the number she needed, and then translated it into English.
Meant to inform her (French) parents that bread in America is baked with a lot of preservatives. Her brain was still halfway in English Mode so she used the word âprĂŠservatifes.â Ended up shocking her parents with the knowledge that apparently, bread in America is full of condoms.
Defined a slang term for meâŚâŚ. with another slang term. In the same language. Which I do not speak.
Was talking to both me and his mother in English when his mother had to revert to Russian to ask him a question about a word. He said âI donât knowâ and turned to me and asked âIs there an English equivalent for ĐŃПиСПаŃиŃĐľŃкиК?â and it took him a solid minute to realize there was no way I would be able to answer that. Meanwhile his mom quietly chuckled behind his back.
Said an expression in English but with Spanish grammar, which turned âHow stressful!â into âWhat stressing!â
Bilingual characters are great but if youâre going to use a linguistic blunder, you have to really understand what they actually blunder over. And itâs usually 10x funnier than âOoops itâs hard to switch back.â
one time my italian bf called toad in the hole (a classic english meal of sausages and yorkshire pudding) âfrog in a potâ
also he forgot the word for octopus and instead made a squid movement with his hand for 5 minutes whilst saying âyou know, the leggy fishâÂ
Itâs⌠itâs okay if youâre not very good at writing? I donât know if this is much of a controversial opinion, but you are improving, and you are consistently moving forward even if you donât see it. Progress is largely practice-based, especially in writing, and even if editors and beta readers werenât a thing that are actively helping you every time they give a critique (and, well, why do you think those exist in the first place? Nobodyâs perfect), you would still be improving just by writing more and reading othersâ writing. Itâs okay if youâre not good at writing. That doesnât mean anything about you, and it definitely doesnât mean anything permanent.

stuck in the constant limbo between âreally excited about my own writingâ and âpretty sure I canât actually writeâ
@sherlocksconesâ youâŚ. I like you. This is why weâre friends. XD
:) Everyone comments on how lucky America is that he didnât inherit Englandâs eyebrows. But the truth is, he obsessively plucks them every, single. night. So no one will ever find out his secretâŚ
And if he even went as much as a week or even a few days, he would look exactly like England. Just with blue eyes and his cowlick.
I thought he and Canada both escaped the Kirkland Eyebrow Curse by being heavily influenced by France >.> Perhaps America is pretending????? XDÂ âYâyeah, Iâm like Canada, I donât have those crazy caterpillar brows *hides tweezers behind his back*â
Also, on a more⌠grounded? idea: America looks like England because he mirrored his facial expressions when he was young, like wee ones do. So much so that if he frowns he looks like England and heâs one of the only people who saw England smile enough to mirror it >.>
Yeah I gotta make everything angsty. <.< another contractual obligation

Grumpytits McGee but heâs punk now
true writing is knowing exactly how your wip starts and knowing exactly how how it ends but the middle is the equivalent of you standing stranded on highway 52 while your car burns in the background before a freeze frame zooms in on your face and a voice-over goes âyup thatâs me. you might be wondering how i got here.âÂ
Iâm in this and I donât like it

With all the events going on recently I think itâs time to post this image againbc iâm tired of this shitÂ
Thanks, I really needed this today!
A Hetalia ship meme template. For those of you who still care about those things. Itâs a fun way to explore new possibilities you mightâve never thought of. If you use it please @ me I love seeing peopleâs thoughts (btw, the @ at the bottom is my twitter, I didnât steal it lolololol). Not every character is here but you have the main ones, I had to keep in mind the format and such. Do you like my maple leaf and Prussian eagle? I made them with love :D
Oh and finally as a disclaimer. This is inspired by a deviantart userâs template, but itâs not theirs. Theirs was much smaller and I made this from scratch.
Wooow ok, this looks really messy XD Sorry âbout that
I had lots of fun doing this, and I discovered so many ships I never thought about before! (like AustriaxBelarus. Ummmm idk how but y e s)
Thank you @bestfanforeverâ for doing this template!!
