detective fiction, started as a writing assignment for my english class. it's probably going to get a different sub-universe name, because WTFB is the title of the 'short' story. apparentally i am incapable of writing something where the police are good. It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.
Like, itâs literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.
So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?
Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.
Oh, and while weâre talking about books, if youâve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely donât go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately theyâre completely free.
Another inside tip from academia: Those papers in really expensive journals that are effectively inaccessible to anyone not in a university network? Depending on the discipline itâs very likely that same paper is on a âpreprintâ server somewhere, with no access restrictions.
Like if you want to read basically any physics, math, or CS paper, arXiv.org will have you covered, because everyone uploads their papers there before submitting to a journal (and generally updates it after peer review). I know all of my papers are on there. This is such common practice that journals have it baked into their licensing agreements that authors retain the right to upload their work to these places.
So the next time you get hit with that paywall, you may not even need sci-hub, just click the arxiv link on google scholar instead.
if for some reason none of this works, the old âsend a email nicely asking for the paper to the authorâ is always a good trick. remember most scientists hate the commercialisation of scientific knowledge
Many authors of papers are on ResearchGate! You can ask for papers there, if they donât just post a copy to download. If theyâre associated with a college, you can usually find their email addresses in the department directory, also.
Good news, he was not next! In fact, she accepted him as her mate, he learned the crane mating dance and now every year, he artificially inseminates her with crane semen to expand the very endangered crane population. True story.
Sorry, he WHAT? Imagine being this man's boss and having to sit him down like. Listen. Brian. We need you to fuck the bird. You have to act like you're excited about it.
(WalWaPo makes you jump through like three separate hoops before you can read the article, so I will share some of the highlights:
Walnut was born in a species-recovery breeding program in the 1980â˛s. The program had crane chicks hand-raised by human volunteers, and at that time they did not fully understand the measures necessary make sure that the chicks do not imprint on humans and retain their identity as cranes. Â
As a result, her keepers believe, Walnut does not recognize other cranes as members of her own species. Â
It has not been proven that Walnut killed her previous suitors; however, there is a persistent rumor in the white-naped-crane-conservation community that she did. Â
Because this species is highly endangered, and the gene pool of the captive population is small, itâs pretty important for the survival of her species that Walnut A) mate, and B) not kill a bunch of other cranes. Â
The actual name of the keeper is Chris Crowe.
They both arrived at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in 2004. Â
Walnut immediately began paying special attention to Chris--and ignoring the eligible male crane in a nearby enclosure. Â
Walnut initiated their courtship, performing the opening moves of a mating dance. Â
Chris realized that if he reciprocated the mating dance, it might be possible to artificially inseminate Walnut with her participation and consent. (The process normally involves restraining the bird.) Â
It worked! Â
Chris and Walnut have had five children, who were raised by other crane couples at the facility--sometimes the biological dad and his mate--both because itâs unclear whether Walnut would accept the chicks as her own, and because Chris is not equipped to be a Crane Dad. Â
However, the Institute provides her with artificial eggs to sit on, and Chris takes his turn looking after them. (This would not work with real eggs because he canât sit on them properly, but Walnut seems to feel that he is on the job if he just stands over them.)
Chris accepts that he is pretty much married to this bird. White-naped cranes live to be about 60, and they mate for life, so he knows he canât retire while Walnut is alive. (At the time of the article, Walnut was 36, and Chris 42.) Â
she has not been PROVEN to have killed her exes, but there is a PERSISTENT RUMOR (really officers she's simply DEVASTATED, she sobs, wearing a new feather boa unfortunately resembling her most recent deceased husband)
His name is Chris CROWE. (Mrs. Walnut Crane-Crowe?)
the mental images of a whole human man learning and performing the crane mating dance, and "sitting" on artificial eggs so she thinks he's performing his duties as a husband and father (and apparently OBJECTS if he does not?)
"chris, buddy, you gotta marry the possibly-murderous crane lady for the GOOD OF THE SPECIES." (alternately: "chris, my man! good news! we found you a very interested lady! She's 36, she's very spirited and independent, she holds a very important and rare status in her society! ...Is there a downside? WELL...")
chris sits any potential human partners down, like "my love, you must understand before we wed,,, i am already... Attached" (camera drifts wistfully to the above photo) "Lady Walnut and I have an,, Understanding... the relationship is open, but very committed"
Not only is he 'married' to walnut, this has apparently happened SEVERAL times, so he has MULTIPLE crane wives, none of which know about any of his other crane wives. This man is, for some unknown reason, irresistible to cranes
the âthis content has been removed for violating Tumblrâs Community Guidelinesâ notice really adds a lot of flavor to this post and somehow makes it MORE obscene than whatever that actually was
I regret being the bearer of bad news, but I thought it should be shared that Walnut passed away in January of this year (2024). There's a lot of mixed info about the lifespan of cranes (due to people misunderstanding what a median is...) but the average for most species I know of is 20-30 years (in the wild if nothing eats them/they don't die young), and 30-45 in captivity, with the oldest known white-naped crane having loved to be 46. Given that she was 42, this old gal did good, and I'm certain she will be missed by folks here.
explained to an 8 year old that once a fruit is ripe you only have so much time until it rots so you have to eat it soon and she said so i'll never be able to keep it perfect like this forever? no and there are about a million pieces of art for you unrelatedly

my wbk hot take is i hope they never explain what endo is up to. why does he have so many connections? is he connected to organized crime? what is he even up to that he can afford an apartment with his boy best friend takiishi at age 17 along with a bunch of really obviously expensive shit? i donât know. i donât want to know. it is so much funnier that i get to imagine him like. day trading. or being really in deep with like the yakuza but even theyâre kind of freaked out by how insane endo is. i hope i never find out so i can come up with endless bullshit myself forever.

Does Nya see the same things as Kai does in season 1 when she gets hit with that fear venom from those snakes that I can't remember the name of?
(Could you also maybe draw it)
SWAP Smith siblings
Kai made them swear to never speak of this occurrence
As for what she sees, I looked up what exactly the venom does to a person, and uh...
Apparently hallucinations of what you fear most? I do question of Kai hallucinating gingerbread men and snakes then, but whatever. If that's the case, then Nya would also hallucinate something stupid at first like Kai did (maybe the same gingerbread men) but then have something emotional. As she's scared to lose Kai (especially after the Skulkin kidnapping), maybe hallucinating that Kai wasn't there? Yeah I think so
âpeople who make six figures shouldnât be allowed to complain ââ most people who make six figures are, these days, solidly middle class. where i live, a combined household income of $110k is *lower middle class*.
âpeople who can afford homes ââ are typically 400-600k in debt for them. also if âcan own your own homeâ is your threshold for the rich you are contemplating eating, i think you are genuinely stupid
âboohoo your investments dropped, stop complaining rich boyâ idk how to tell you this but. most of us have a retirement account. you should probably open one

when the persona you made eats you; when the performance youve been putting on eats you; when the name they gave you eats you; when the image people made of you eats you; when the role you were assigned eats you; when the you that other people see or even made for you or you made for them takes over the you that you know and eats you alive.
The Caterpillar-Mimicking Spider: this species of jumping spider mimics a lichen moth caterpillar, possibly as a way to deter predators
This species (Uroballus carlei) is sometimes referred to as a caterpillar jumping spider or caterpillar jumper, because it bears such a striking resemblance to a caterpillar. It was discovered in Hong Kong just a few years ago.
Researchers believe that these strange little spiders mimic the caterpillars of local lichen moths, which may help to deter predators. Lichen moth caterpillars ingest toxic substances that make them unpalatable to predators, and they're covered in urticating hairs that cause pain and irritation when touched, so predators tend to avoid them. They also have aposematic features that advertise those defense mechanisms, making them an excellent model for mimicry.
The spider's resemblance to a caterpillar may serve as a defense mechanism against larger vertebrates, such as birds, and as a predatory ploy against certain invertebrates, like small beetles, thus allowing the spider to avoid being eaten while also enabling it to stalk and capture its own prey more effectively.
This article described the discovery back in 2019:
A new spider has been discovered, hiding in plain sight in one of the most populated places on the planet. And thereâs a good chance it went undiscovered for so long because it doesnât really look like a spider at all, but more like a fuzzy baby caterpillar. Its cute, fuzzy appearance has led the newly discovered spider to be named Uroballus carlei, after Eric Carle â author of the wildly popular childrenâs book The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Living alongside Uroballus carlei in the wooded areas of the Eastern District in Hong Kong are lichen moths. During the caterpillar stage, these moths are covered in bristly brown fur not dissimilar to Uroballus carlei. They live on a diet of lichen, and itâs this diet that gives them their name.
