A couple of beautiful tiger beetles in Colorado. It was my goal this year to get some good photographs of a tiger beetle, so I was incredibly excited to find these guys. They ran away from me pretty readily, but fortunately there were enough of them that I had the opportunity to learn and get close.

Took the day off to enjoy a long bug walk. Some highlights.
Gibbous Death-Watch Beetle, masquerading beautifully as a piece of bird poop or rotting wood. I was proud of myself for spotting her.
Zebra Jumping Spider, Twenty-Spotted Lady Beetle, a beautiful leafhopper, a fascinating pygmy grasshopper, a rolly-polly, a skipper, a harvestman (not a spider, but related), a water strider, and a grass fly.

Asian Mud-Dauber Wasp, invasive to the US. Charming face and an interesting body type; I like that first pic a lot. (2025)

Sat in the grass with my wife to paint and encountered many small friends. Painted Lady Butterfly, Knotweed Leaf Beetle (I got a vid of the female laying eggs!) and a Sweat Bee that landed on my hoodie.
Some of the Spiny-Backed Orbweaver on its own. One of the first bugs I photographed was one of these, and it was one of the things that really got me into the hobby.
Beautiful day in South Florida visiting my parents. Found a lot of wonderful orbweavers.
I think all are Orchard Orbweavers except the stunning red and black Spiny-Backed Orbweaver in the top-right. Also note the perfect smiley face (🙂) on the center-left spider.

Went to Italy with my wife last month and saw a TON of Thick-Legged Flower Beetles!!
Was so excited, I had to resist the urge to tell hikers passing us that they were missing out. For some reason, other people just dont appreciate the beetles like they should. 🪲
Had a very successful bug walk today. Happy summer! 1. A jumping spider threatening a bee, 2. A hobomok skipper, 3. A maybe-spider wasp biting a dead crab spider (she dragged it away after) 4. A katydid nymph, probably, 5. Thin-spined jumping spider (shiny red-green), 6. Linden bark-borer moth

Bold Jumping Spider!
These pics are special to me. This spider was one of the first close-up bug/arthropod pictures I ever took and I was surprised to see how small of a subject I could photograph with just my phone camera. I was drawn in by his beautiful chelicerae. :)

Went with my partner to a beautiful greenhouse conservatory today and found this stunning Bold Jumping Spider! Look at those colorful mouthparts and that cute little tramp stamp.
I have a particular fondness for Bold Jumping Spiders, as one of the first close bug photos I ever took was of a little black & white one (I'll post soon), but I had not seen this variation with the orange triangle before.
Went to a nature trail in South Florida recently while visiting my parents. I was hoping I would find many alive insects even though it's winter, but mostly ended up with pics of a different kind of arthropod! (But if a spider is a Bug then a crab is a Bug).
Featured (in order): Fiddler Crab, Mangrove Tree Crab (x2), Blue Land Crab (x2)
Also: NOT an arthropod, final pic is a Mangrove Periwinkle (sea snail)
