Something about the bastardization of the story time and time again proves that nobody in power really cares about the people who would resonate with King’s Carrie White. A girl so ugly and repulsive she’s been removed from her own story. The societal need for women and girls to be constantly perceived as attractive is what fuels a fair amount of her torment in the book, but that person isn’t even allowed to exist on the screen. We cannot empathize with her; it isn’t allowed. It’s fascinating to me.

ok so it is very true that the most butch ppl can handle is like scorpia from she ra or other such feminine women with short hair. which. u dont even wanna know the women i wanna fuck. but at the same time ☝️ as a full throttle adult butch i want to reiterate that even these small breakages from "traditional femininity" were incremental and monumental steps into getting me to accept myself. like yes its annoying how Woman With Short Hair is the only shit we get, but at 14 i was facing so much pressure to keep my long "beautiful" (re: frustrating to manage) hair and be super feminine and skinny and small that seeing a character like scorpia who is Buff Competent and Has Short Hair was like water in the desert. so i think its important to recognize how even the small insignificant "cowardly" steps into nonconformity can be monumental for someone who didnt even realize it was an option
The Adventure Zone: Story and Song Graphic Novel is out in bookstores everywhere today! I can't believe it!! I'm so excited for you to get to read it, and I can't wait to hear what you think.
When we started making these graphic novels, I thought we'd be lucky if we got to make any more than the very first one-- so to have actually been able to complete the entire Balance arc means the world. We would never have made it this far without all of the time and attention and care you've given TAZGN over the years. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration to get to be a part of! But all comics are ultimately a collaboration between the folks who make them and those who read them. We all put every last ounce of work, heart, and joy into these books that we possibly could, and I can only hope that that shines through. The rest is up to you!
PS: once you've read it, if you have a favorite page, panel, or background detail/interaction, please tell me!! i wanna hear about it!!

ID: a painting of a lighthouse against a vivid pink, purple, and orange sunset. The clouds are painted with very textured brushstrokes. The lighthouse and headland are cast in bluish-purple shadow and the ocean is shades of blue. End ID.

Mystique!! Mystique first appears in Ms. Marvel (1977), and her adoptive daughter, Rogue, is also debuted in relation to this plotline. Carol and Rogue still have a very interconnected relationship in the comics, but despite being arguably her biggest nemesis, Mystique hasn't appeared with Carol in ages.
We learn she's a shapeshifter, disguising herself as Nick Fury, then others. She hires Ballard, the CIA guy Frank was trying to find, to assassinate Carol. Ballard gears up in Centurion armor, and ends up fighting all the Avengers.
"Easier said than done, buster, because even with my back to the wall--
I don't give up!"
Always did like the Kelly Sue Deckonnick quote: "Carol keeps falling down, but she always gets back up. We say the same thing about Captain America, but Steve always gets back up because it's the right thing to do. Carol gets back up because 'Fuck you.'"
The Avengers see Carol getting hurt and jump in to help. Carol uses her magical-girl-transformation abilities to hide in plain sight in her civvies.
Carol learns Centurion (Ballard) has the ability to track her suit, so she changes into a precursor for her next costume -- the lightning-bolt.
HANK, DON'T FUCK WITH ME. I'll KICK THE SHIT OUT OF YOU.
Arabella
"Nightmares I have known and hated...
...Could it be my seventh-sense, warning me of an ambush? ...
'Relax' Ha! I've never felt so scared in my entire life. Not to mention helpless.
If this keeps up, I won't need to be killed.
I'll simply come apart at the seams."
More of Carol's mental health troubles. She's seeing (and seeing) a psychiatrist, shaking from frequent nightmares that may or may not be predictions, and people around her are noticing and frequently commenting on her stress level.
How do you think Carol's precog ability mixes with her canon PTSD? Imagine having a nightmare or a vivid triggered thought and having to wonder if you were literally seeing into the future, or if you were just having trauma symptoms. That sounds rough.
Anyway lucky for Carol, this beautiful, pantsless woman comes over to make her feel better. They're evidently close enough at this point that Arabella feels comfortable telling Carol what she really thinks, which is definitely quite familiar.
"I'll survive, Arabella. I always have."
"Is that what you want out of life, survival?
What about feelings? What about needing and wanting and caring and love?"
"What about them? I've loved two people in my life, with all my heart. Both are dead.
One, I think, I might have saved... but I didn't."
Arabella tells Carol she needs to let people in so they can give her care and love. Carol admits she has loved two people with all of her heart, and they've both died.
One of these two people, who she "might have saved", is pretty explicitly Salia, right?
Now... is the other dead person Michael Rossi, or someone else? I can't tell what number of points I could count in "Dead Love" here. I will say, we will see Rossi again. And in case anyone is reading along, what I won't say is what hm ok moving on...
"Sooner or later, you'll crack under the strain."
"In a lot of ways, my friend, I cracked a long, long time ago."
Carol, affirming Arabella's assertion that she puts up too many walls, gets tired of being vulnerable, and ends their little dalliance so she can get ready for work.
Frank
"Why Frank, have you been away? Bless my soul, I never noticed.
... I already have a date, thanks." (with Arabella??)
Frank returns. Carol is characteristically abrasive with him; she always talks this way to Frank, it's hilarious.
"Nobody snowballs Carol Danvers-- the former terror of Webster Elementary-- and gets away with it!"
Frank and Tracy work together to pummel Carol with snowballs.
Carol gets really into the game and tackles Frank. Shocked, Frank was very clearly not expecting his BOSS to tackle him. Picture your manager going in for the football tackle.
He'd probably be shocked to learn what kind of life his serious, perpetually-stressed, hot lady boss has lived.
Seizing his opportunity, Frank kisses Carol. He definitely initiates, but she finds the kiss "enjoyable".
"You're a pistol, Frank, but a kiss-- however enjoyable-- does not a love affair make."
Frank comes on a little to strong, and Carol pushes him down a hill. Even if we don't include whatever is going on with some of the women in Carol's life, she has a tendency to play the field. Mike, Frank, Wonder Man, that guy Paul we saw for two seconds, etc.
And Salia and Arabella...
Review: Fun! Carol has interesting relationships with others, and Mystique is here.
Mystique is a really fun and scary nemesis for Carol, and I appreciate that she's also a woman, and she's married to a woman, and she has a daughter who is a girl who will one day be one of the women Carol significantly interacts with. Look how many cool women Mystique's inclusion adds. Yay women.
Speaking of women, I don't know what was up with Arabella but hello. I guess she and Carol have some relationship where she runs right over and listens to her talk for hours by the fire in the middle of the night, and feels comfortable telling her some difficult and heartfelt hard truths. And all of that, pantsless.
But so far, none of the men or women in this comic have been able to pin Carol down, so there's room for Frank! Despite my usual lack of interest, the kiss scene was pretty fun. A perpetually stressed woman tackles her employee, lets him kiss her, and then pushes him down a hill before he gets any ideas. (Not HR recommended.)
One thing im uncomfortably woke about is bugs. And im actively trying to get more uncomfortably woke. By this i mean i DO believe the normalised fear of bugs stems from both government and business propaganda. The start of household pesticide sales coinciding with the boom in insect related horror movies. The promotion of anti intellectualism and anti enviromentalism. If you're scared of bugs, you wont care about saving them. If you dont care about saving them, you wont care about saving our home, since without bugs it cannot be saved. If you dont care about saving our home, the rich can do whatever they want with the chunks of it they continue to destroy.
I WILL calmly and kindly try to help anyone who is afraid of bugs. I will show them my finds, i will explain their importance, i will tell them just how sweet and gentle and friendly they are. And I WILL shoot down any immature loser who believes senseless killing is the only possible response to not liking something.
Get woke. Love bugs.
EDIT: this breached containment. My usual like count is like 5 😭 i want to clarify i mean people who conflate fear with hate are the ones who wont care about saving our planet, like people who threaten to kill peoples pet bugs or actively kill bugs outside for no apparent reason. Not people who run away from a bee.
Making them into lap cats. Short haired boy never stops purring, its adorable. And long hair boy keeps grooming his siblings. And lil girl likes to curl up on you all the time.
These kittens are looking for homes near southern Illinois, USA.

Carol and Kamala's team ups are kind of frustrating because at least one of them usually gets hit with really regressive and/or reductive writing. So many writers still depict Kamala as some sort of fangirl sidekick fawning over Captain Marvel even though a core part of her character arc was embracing her identity, becoming her own hero and gaining a more critical perspective of the woman she used to idolize. Meanwhile, Carol in Kamala's comics is mostly used as an almost symbolic embodiment of a hegemonic white female superhero. Which works very well for the story and themes that GWW is going for, but it does mean that Carol is in truth more of a narrative device than an actual character and tends to come across as a fairly one dimensional caricature of a pro-establishment authority figure.
