So Bella visits Forks every summer as a kid, and there she makes friends with Edward, who is the son of some of Charlie's friends. At seventeen she does the whole moving to Forks thing and she ends up classmates with Jacob, a muscly and broody and mysterious guy who moved in to town a couple years ago along with a bunch of other dudes like him. In this scenario Jacob isn't tempted by Bella's blood, he's just mysterious and tall dark and handsome and Bella falls for him anyway.

Meanwhile she meets back with Edward a few times, she doesn't see him often because he and his parents live outside the town and he's homeschooled. Edward has a weak constitution and he ends up in the hospital often and at some point he overhears Dr Cullen, the best and most handsome doctor in town, have an argument with his adoptive daughter Rosalie about Jacob's gang and the word "wolf" is mentioned. He doesn't get much of it but being a gossipy little bitch he shares that with Bella when they meet.

Cue the figuring it out but it's for a shapeshifter instead. "You're impossibly fast and strong. Your hands are hot like fire. How old are you?"

"Seventeen."

"How long have you been seventeen?"

"??? A few months?? What are you talking about??"

Anyway here Bella falls in love with Jacob, but it's far more like a usual teenage romance because Jacob doesn't want to eat her (though he is strong enough to hurt her so he has to be careful) and because Bella cannot turn into a shapeshifter nor does she want to.

Jacob tells her that ever since he phased for the first time two years ago he joined the pack, they travel through the country finding stray "vermin" and killing them and Bella is like what vermin and he's like you already know too much plus my ancestors apparently made a treaty with the local vermin so I can't tell you who or what they are and Bella is like???

But then they locate some other "vermin" and Jacob's pack has to leave, he tells Bella he was already on thin ice by letting her know their secret (she figured it out but he confirmed it) and they leave her behind for New Moon era. Bella is depressed because she lost her sun etc.

She instead latches onto Edward, idk how maybe in this scenario he's the one to fix the bikes? And they end up getting closer and Edward is in love with her but she's still missing Jacob and she has all her holes and stuff.

And then Edward "weak constitution" Masen gets sick along with his parents (his only family) and his parents actually die. Dr Cullen rushes Edward into a bigger hospital outside of the town and Bella is growing sick with worry herself, almost tries to track them down.

Anyway, a week or so later she actually gets a call from Edward. He sounds different but he is alive and he says he's getting so much better! But his voice sounds completely empty and Bella has no idea what's going on.

Slowly the news spread through the town: Edward is getting adopted by Dr Cullen and his wife, the weird pasty ass extremely beautiful pair with the affinity to adopt also extremely beautiful teenagers who date each other now. However they'll keep homeschooling Edward and despite his secret phone call, he later practically tells Bella they can't be friends anymore.

Cue second heartbreak. But similar to how Bella found out Jacob's pack is shapeshifters, she figures out the Cullens, now including Edward, are vampires.

Yeah yeah that would need some adjustments but roll with it for now.

So anyway Bella confronts Edward about it along with the Cullens, Rosalie and Jasper hiss at her but Carlisle "no innocent deaths" Cullen and Alice "we're gonna be best friends Bella 👀" Cullen intervene. The "murderer" misunderstanding turns here into Bella thinking that Carlisle killed Edward's parents and took him in by force, when what happened is that his parents really got sick and died and Edward was at death's door as well and Carlisle decided to save him because reasons. I know it's different from why Carlisle originally chooses to save him roll with me for a moment.

Anyway, a random vampire starts stalking Bella and the Cullens gather around her to protect her because they believe they caused the vampire to stalk her (maybe they think it's a Volturi hitman and they want her dead because she knows about vampires?) but it will later be found out that it's Victoria and she's pissed because Jacob's pack killed her mate and she wants revenge by killing Jacob's mate.

Meanwhile, the "newborn vampire uncontrollable thirst" is either not a thing or it doesn't apply for the humans the newborn vampire knew before they turned. So even though Edward is still getting used to the whole vampirism thing, he doesn't want to suck Bella like a capri sun. The Cullen coven is so much different than the wolf pack but Bella is VERY intrigued at the idea of becoming strong and immortal and sticking it up to Jacob for abandoning her... and being with Edward does feel kinda nice although it's not the same...

And then Jacob comes back. And because this Bella has a backbone the dilemma is an actual dilemma because on one hand she's got the warm, happy Jacob for whom she doesn't have to change but who also fucking abandoned her, and on the other you have Edward, who is now going through the broody and mysterious phase and can offer her immortality, indestructibility and beauty (here Edward is not opposed to the idea of it) but he's. Not. Jacob.

So yeah. The choice that she gets so torn between here is one where she can stay as she is and accept the warm, happy sun back (although she has to do the work of forgiving him) and the the other where she can become beautiful and powerful but be with someone she's not certain she loves the same way.
