i'm so glad to be back!! thank you for reading, idk where i'd be without y'all 😭❤️
Hey, I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to tell you that I reread the whole fic to prepare for the next updates and I'm blown away by how good it is. Like, sometimes you reread your old favs and it doesn't hit the same, here it's the opposite. Genuinely feels like heroin to me
thank you!! i really appreciate you writing. i'm so happy to know you're excited to read! sorry i'm a bit late, but the chapter is up now, and this message really helped :) i hope your midterms went well! <3
Who do think is the most objectively handsome male vampire as described in the books and in the Guide? Who do you like more in the Guide?
i gotta go with long-haired Jacob Black on this one. physically, i love the evocative descriptions for his hair, esp. "inky" & "cornsilk," & the way Bella describes his hands. symbolically, his connection to sunshine, warmth, & nature positions him as a soft & familiar character. the physical descriptions remain similar for short-haired JB, but it feels incongruous with his personality shift in Eclipse.
as far as the Guide goes, i guess Emmett sounds the best? we love a man with curly hair & dimples
If you ever take on the task of a Twilight rewrite your goal should be to make it worse, actually
& that's the TRUTH

I feel like some people need to relearn Genre Expectations... "Man, this tragedy sucks!!! Why didn't they just do XYZ, then everything could have ended happily!!" well, then it wouldn't be a tragedy, would it. "Man, this lighthearted teen romcom is terrible, it's so sappy and unrealistic!!" Well, yeah. If it had been gritty and dark, it wouldn't have been a lighthearted romcom, would it. Is the writing actually bad or are you just trying to order a milkshake from a Home Depot
tbh, New Moon ending with "Edward came back, and i snapped out of my crippling depression :)" feels scarier than actually healing from your severe mental illness. how terrifying would it be to spend six months slogging through hell, then suddenly waking up in your fairytale wonderland like nothing happened? i'd be clawing at the walls waiting for the other shoe to drop. idk how you can look at the love of your life & not wonder whether he was real, or a memory, or a delusion. are you dead? dying? asleep? crazy? if so, to what extent? when he goes hunting, can you be sure he was real? when he follows you to class, does he feel like a ghost? when you dream, do you dream of the real Edward? the past Edward? or the hallucination? where did the pain that reminded you you were alive go? why do you suddenly have an appetite after wasting away to skin and bones? even Bella "I'm good with weird" Swan has her limits, and tbh "my soulmate, who weaponized my worst insecurities & sent me into a psychosis-level depression, is finally back and i am Cured" seems like a mind-breaking denial of reality. her whole life changed overnight in the best way - and she's telling us she has no scars from the dark? hmm
the replies are kind of driving me crazy actually. "UM Bella DID have anxiety" ok yes but i'm begging us to put this into context
smeyer devoted ~170 words (0.01%) of Eclipse addressing Bella's abandonment issues. which to me says either smeyer is a shit writer, AND/OR, Bella is not being truthful with anyone including the reader about the scope of the PTSD catalyzed by Edward's cruel breakup - one that starts with him declaring he doesn't love her & ends with a suicide mission where she witnesses the deaths of like forty people. "Bella is anxious" ok well maybe she should be stripping the copper wire out of the walls with her teeth wondering what the hell is even real????
i need Edward and Bella to be city rats together. dodging subway fares, finding the best underground music spots, bickering over the fastest route to get across town, waging psychological warfare against their rude neighbors & landlord. PLEASE
my favourite part of new moon is when edward is bagging on romeo for being dumb as shit and then is like “ohhh but actually i’m lowkey rlly jealous of him” and bella just naturally assumes he means bcs romeo is in love with the beautiful juliett and edward’s like “what? ew no i just wish i could kill myself”

Twilight but everyone is a Muppet except Edward
idk man, i know vampires are supposed to be unchanging or whatever, but it seems like such a cop-out for character development. like, here we have Edward who perceives himself as a soulless monster despite his actions. throughout the series, Bella is by his side convincing him he's worthy. but it isn't until Resume is born that he realizes he has a soul. & ok, sure, maybe there's something to the fact that Bella sacrificed her life to give him this proof that he's not damned. but it's just not written in a way that sells that idea. Resume being the reason he's convinced he has a soul feels so empty. this baby plot comes out of fucking left field, she's completely unrelatable as a character, she sucks all the introspection out of the series, and yet... wow, look at that ladies and gentlemen, the man is cured of his monster complex by this thing we're supposed to care about. when it's like. Bella was Right There the whole time. it wasn't her that convinced him, but what she gave him. it just feels like Bella was right all this time: she was never enough.
tbh i think Bella & Edward's marriage is only happy and romantic for young people who don't know yet what a happy marriage looks like? which sounds kinda harsh since they're not unhappy, but...
there's an element of friendship that's missing. a deepening intimacy that comes with being newlyweds. constantly having sex is a stereotype & a fraction of what married life entails! i wish they had come back from their honeymoon with inside jokes and funny stories. i wish we'd seen them bickering over their idiosyncrasies as they adjust to living together. like. if you're going to write Twilight as a cozy paranormal romance, why cut out the coziest part of marriage?
beneath it all, what bothers me is that we never really get this emotional payoff. Edward & Bella struggle with their attraction, struggle to stay together despite the danger, struggle through their own insecurities and physical relationship... but there's no real reward for the reader after Bella becomes a vampire. we go right from the wedding to Bella getting pregnant, a possible war with the wolves, demon baby, then a confrontation with the Volturi.
when do we see them really be comfortable with each other as partners? the few lines we get of them reading together or discussing the plot don't feel enough for a series that uniquely prioritizes the "slice of life" aesthetic. why don't we see them take up new hobbies? or having discussions that would have been impossible for their unmarried virgin selves? when marriage goes symbolically hand-in-hand with flawless immortality, how come we don't get to learn what it means to to be married to your best friend forever?
Eclipse AU where Edward still refuses to turn Bella which leaves Alice to turn her, but in order to prepare, she has to drink small amounts of Bella's blood to get used to it, which naturally makes Edward jealous and also, frustratingly enough, turns him on for some reason
smut. the eclipse au is smut.

it would've been so easy to give Bella and Alice something in common: sewing.
if Bella is growing up balancing budgets, she & Renee are obviously tight on money. darling socks, mending holes, embroidering over stains, & basic tailoring are all simple household chores that save money & position Bella as a "responsible old soul."
Bella sews out of necessity but never has the money to work with quality fabrics or make her own clothes. she can be interested in how articles are assembled & still hate shopping & trying stuff on. but Alice can teach her new techniques & broaden Bella's horizons, turning what was once a household chore into a hobby they both share
this would have been so wholesome but unfortunately SM took “loves fashion” to mean “thoughtless and superficial slave to microtrends as a form of societal pressure to conform” as opposed to “love for and appreciation of textiles and fashion as a form of art and expression”
100%. fashion feels like more like a tool to indicate status & wealth than it does an actual hobby. Alice shops, dresses her family, commissions a designer for a wedding dress, but she never seems interested in the nitty gritty of textiles, fabric arts, etc. it makes it hard not to interpret it as a symptom of the mindless consumerist culture glorified in early 21st-century America. but i suppose if you're positioning the Cullens as the pinnacle of the early 21st-century white American dream, unfettered consumerism is a feature, not a bug
Renee canonically makes Bella a quilt. SHE sews. Bella absolutely should!!!
even more insane when you think about all the tangential skills Renee had to learn in order to make the t-shirt quilt she gifts Bella in Eclipse. she picks up a hobby every other week but manages to keep her focus long enough to sink in hours and hours of work? either she's a quilting prodigy or that's been a lifelong skill for her. which, if that's the case, makes Bella's lack of sewing skills even weirder
hey bitches i'm back from the dead and i'm ready to party
