Curtis has definitely thought about defecting at least twice in his lifetime
I can imagine his constant anxiety living among enemies, one slip and he could end up in a tribunal. No wonder he has insomnia in canon, being a spy puts a massive mental and physical toll on him
In the Legion, he probably never had a leader like Hsu, someone who doesn't kill subordinates for petty mistakes, treats them with warmth. When he finds a man who genuinely treats him like a human being and cares about his well-being, it destroys him
He is shocked at first, and touched, perhaps at first he only cares about Hsu, not the whole NCR
Things get more dangerous, he actually starts to care about his men and the people around him, and he hates himself for that. He just keeps feeling conflicted
He can't just run from the Legion and the NCR probably won't forgive him easily either, so he lies, he lies often. The non Legion endings could actually make them work. The Legion stays too busy with their own shit and he can just pretend to die and run somewhere back in the West with Hsu
He’s such a complex character with so much potential, his relationship with Hsu has so many layers!

It was past midnight. Ronald was barely able to sleep, and neither could James, so they just sat there, enjoying a tea picnic for no reason. Ronald sat down on the cold concrete right next to James and out of nowhere, asked, "Sir, if you don't mind me asking... do you think you’re going to Heaven or Hell?"
James let out a laugh, shaking his head. "Hell, definitely."
Ronald blinked, he hadn't expected James to answer with that. "Really? After everything you've done for the Republic?"
"I’ve signed papers that sent hundreds of men and women to their deaths, Ron." James said, his eyes staring up at the moon and the night sky. "No matter how good the reason was, a man like me doesn't get a pass to Heaven."
"Friendly fire isn't tolerated, Picus."
"Are we still friends, Vulpes?"

Picus and Vulpes relationship headcanons because why not
- I think Vulpes is older than Picus, maybe around 7-8 years older. With Vulpes in his early 30s and Picus in his mid 20s, Vulpes is older than most frumentarii in the area, making him a mentor to most of them
- Their relationship is mostly mentor/mentee, though it has become more equal since Vulpes sent Picus to infiltrate the NCR. They used to be really close, with Vulpes practically acting as the older brother Picus never had
- They used to meet up more often before Vulpes became notorious in the Strip
- Picus is taller than Vulpes (185 cm vs 172 cm)
- Deep down, Vulpes sometimes envies the freedom Picus gets to experience, while Picus envies that Vulpes doesn't have to live among the enemy constantly, a double life that leaves Picus anxious every single day
- They look like comrades, but we know they have a heated rivalry, since competition is a big part of Legion culture
I may rework this picture later, but I want to talk about the story behind this and the last post. Basically, Curtis is swayed by the NCR and decided to desert from the Legion. And he developed a level of respect and trust in Hsu (Also because that Hsu is the more gentle officer at the base). Hsu on the other hand had a secret bisexual awakening with Curtis, but still found him strange and unsettling. Then, on an outing into the strip district, Curtis confessed his identity to Hsu, and tried to negotiate an asylum in NCR. Hsu was absolutely bewildered and angered by this sudden revelation, but he agreed to discuss this in private at a later date. And before they had the chance, Vulpes got them.
This picture basically depicts a scene that I was thinking. Vulpes has given Curtis a heavy beat, and he is now asking Hsu if he wants Curtis to be murdered on the spot, since he knew Curtis betrayed them. Hsu declined, because in this situation, Curtis’ death is of no worth.
The result of this story is either they both got killed, or that they managed to escape.
I wanted to share some screenshots I found from when I did a roleplay about Vulpes going undercover in the NCR (like Curtis).

The background behind this image is that Curtis decide to confess to Hsu that he is a legion spy. When he did, he was discovered by Vulpes who decided to use them to set an example.
Picus is a thoroughgoing misanthrope and a committed agent of the Legion, who spends years living among NCR troopers feeling nothing but contempt for them. For years he successfully sabotages the Republic, until his new commanding officer, Colonel Hsu, begins to show him genuine human concern. To his own surprise, Curtis finds himself unable to respond with his usual indifference.

After intel confirmed the location of a new Fiend factory hideout, Colonel James Hsu sent Captain Ronald Curtis and five other troopers on a sabotage mission to eliminate the facility and immediately pull back.
However, ridden by war fatigue and exhaustion, Ronald chose to engage instead of retreating. His insubordination left James angry, pushing the Colonel to drag Ronald into a supply shack for a heated confrontation.
I tried to draw Col. Hsu today
I drew him in 5 minutes and it's like my second time drawing a person in ages so that's why it looks so bad. Plus I didn't have a rubber (Eraser) so I had to use blue tak lol. Hope it didn't turn out too bad.
The main issue to me is the nose but like how do you draw a nose. Whenever I do it it's either way too thick, or too skinny lol
I liked it, so I made a redraw ^-^ Imsgine if NCR had Corporate Memphis? And depicted, like, all Mojave senior officers like that? And Hsu hated that because of how modest he is?..
