It was 12:30 in the morning. The world outside was comfortably silentβno dogs barking and no cars vigorously honking at the streets. It was just the distant hums of streetlights glowing faintly across the ground. As you were preoccupied with your thoughts, your phone suddenly buzzed with a text.
FROM CLARK KENT @ 12:34 AM
When your eyes gazed at the single notification popped up on the screen, your heart instantly flipped. Of course it did. Even the littlest things he did or the times he was mentioned at every functionβit always made your pulse quicken dramatically.
- no im sleeping rn, kent
You replied sarcastically. Clark's reply was sent just right after you sent yours.
FROM CLARK KENT @ 12:37 AM
- Your texts are always dumb at midnight
FROM CLARK KENT @ 12:38 AM
- Wait, please donβt go :(
You rolled onto your back, staring at your ceiling. A smile appeared on your blushed faceβyou were over the moon. Your fingertips began to move as you typed your next message to him.
FROM CLARK KENT @ 12:41 AM
- Have you ever looked outside at night and wondered what the stars are trying to tell?
You were confused. You shook your head dramatically as your face remained puzzled by his reply. You hummed softlyβthinking of a jokey response to Clarkβs question.
- is this some Kryptonian shit going inside ur head, clark?
FROM CLARK KENT @ 12:42 AM
- Iβm being serious right now
- The skyβs clear tonight, look outside
Curiosity invaded your racing mind. the curtain was pulled asideβyour head looking up tiredly. The sky stretched endlessly; the stars blinked amidst the dark velvet above you.
- yeah itβs pretty actually
- did u just text me to discuss astronomy?
FROM CLARK KENT @ 12:45 AM
- Because itβs your favorite, isnβt it?
- Or maybe itβs my excuse to talk to you
Your heart stumbled. Your eyes were fixated at Clarkβs three replies for way too longβyou did not know what to type. You typed something. Deleted. Typed again.
FROM CLARK KENT @ 12:48 AM
- Iβm outside your door Y/N
You glimpsed at the text notification lighting up the phone screen. You hurried over towards the door of your apartmentβswinging it casually. Sure enough, there was Clark standing in front of you. That grinning smile showed off his endearing dimples. Youβd noticed his fingertips were smudged with inkβyou were sure it came from long hours of working at the Daily Planet. Clark stood tall in a quiet, effortless wayβbroad shoulders were still visible beneath his slightly crinkled white shirt. And God, you hated that smile. The shy grin heβs wearing made your stomach feel butterflies. Every. Single. Time. Β Β
And then there were his glasses. Those ridiculous black glasses that sat perfectly onto his face.
You swear he was better without these thin black frames, since youβd thought it was a distraction for his blue orbs. Well, he still needed the glasses for disguise. But somehow it really worked, most people saw Clark exactly how he wanted to be seen. Harmless, clumsy, and a little awkward. Yet, you still recognized the best of him. Not because heβs Superman. But because heβs Clark Kent.
βHey. Are you alright?β He asked politely. Your heart nearly escaped your chest as your thoughts about him were interrupted.
βOf course I am,β you answered immediately. You triedβreally triedβnot to smile.
βCome on, the stars are waiting for us.β Clark spoke, breaking the silence between you two.
βYouβre such a loser, Kent. Wait for me here, Iβll be out in five minutes.β
βWhen you said five minutes, do you mean five hours? βCuz, jeez, you always take too many time getting ready.β
βArgh! Youβre so annoying.βΒ The door was slammed βangrilyβ as you went inside your apartmentβlittle did he know you were smiling miles wide. While Clark rubbed the back of his neckβpreventing a chuckle to escape from him.
βCute,β he whispered at himself.
Β You threw on a hoodieβthe sleeves slightly covering your hands and the black fabric looking soft from being worn too many times. Minutes passed, you opened the front door. Clark stood outside with his veiny hands awkwardly tucked inside the pockets of his jeans. His black curl locks framed his lovesome face.
The night air gently brushed your hair as the two of you strolled down the busy main streets of Metropolisβyour shoulders brushing against his every few steps. You asked Clark what was inside of his tote bag. βI brought a mat for us,β he replied. He insisted that βevery time we go out needs a little preparationββyou teased him for being like a seventy-year-old man. βYou old hag.β
Eventually, Clark led you to a park with little to no people walking around. The grass delicately swayed beneath the silver gleam of the moon. He put down and spread the mat across the ground carefully before sitting beside each other. For a while, neither of you both spoke. The silence was deafening, yet it was not uncomfortable. With Clark, it never was. It was rather peaceful.
Then, somewhere far from the both of you, a shooting star crossed above the horizon. You gasped silentlyβpointing upwards and patting Clarkβs arm at the same time. But he was already looking at youβuninterested to look above.
βHey, look! A shooting star!β You excitedly told him. It disappeared almost as quickly as it streaked, fading into the dark sky. But his gaze never left your eyes. Neither of you spoke for a few moments. Clark swallowed hard and finally looked away from you.
Then, Clark pointed his finger upward suddenly. βY/N, dβyou see that one?β
βClark, there are literally millions of them right now.β
βThe bright one right there.β
βWhat about it?β You chuckled softly right after you asked him. You were anticipating somethingβeither a random pick-up line or a fascinating fact about a fucking star.
βDid you know that the star Iβm pointing is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Its light travelled for many years just to reach us tonight,β he undoubtedly spoke like a 5-year-old who just learned the alphabet. A smile appeared on your face.
βWell, I didnβt. Thank you for that fact.β You jokingly replied; youβre looking at him instead of the sky. Clark noticed your stare almost immediately. The words that were about to come out of his mouth caught in his throat. Still, he let them out like a brave he was.
βAnd yet, I can only see the brightest stars in your eyes.β
You froze and laughed nervously. You tried to speak out words, but they couldnβt. It was almost like the words had been trapped inside your mouth. βClark, what do you mean by that?β
He adjusted his glasses with shaky fingers. βIβve never been good at telling people how I feel. But you make me want to try. I like being around more than anyone else. You make me smile like a kid even you do absolutely nothing.β He confessed suddenly. βAnd when Iβm with you, I donβt feel like I need to pretend to be anyone else.β
The wind weaved the area around you, but you barely noticed it.
βI looked at you a thousand times. And I swear, I love you in every one of them. And I always see my reflection in your eyes.β
His words settled between you like a moonlight. For the first time in your life, youβd seen Clark looked vulnerable in a way nobody else ever got to seeβlike he handed you a fragile part of himself. You moved closer to him; your hand slid over his.
βClark Kent, I love you. And, I cannot deny the beating of my heart for you.β His eyes widened behind the black framed specs. You then laughed nervously.
βYouβre always by my side every day. You remember things that nobodyβas in nobody ever does. You look at me like I matter the most to you.β Your fingers gripped his hand as you continued your confession.
βI remembered thinking that I am hard to love. Then, thereβs someone who love me as easy as breathing. And, that is you, Clark.β Both of you laughed breathlesslyβpink blushes flooded across his cheeks. You spoke again. βI fell for you the hardest when you showed at my apartment at fucking one in the morningβjust to take me outside and to stargaze.β Clarkβs other hand ruffled his curls while you smiled helplessly at him.
For a second, your eyes gazed at his lips. Your hands cupped Clarkβs faceβthumbs caressing his flushed cheeks. The kiss happened slowly. Slowly and passionately. He kissed you like you were something precious, one hand resting gently against your cheek while the other held the back of your head delicately. Like he never wanted to let go.
Both of you pulled away from each other gradually. You took his glasses and cleaned it with your hoodie.
βYour glasses are always dirty.β You wiped the lenses carefully, then put them back onto his face. You looked at each otherβs eyes affectionatelyβno secrets, no unkept feelings, no expectations. Just the two of you beneath an endless sky full of stars.
And somewhere above you, another shooting star crossed the night sky.
