There are many reasons, but what struck me the most is though Gilbert hallucinated of Auguste, the one he saw and wanted to hold is when his life about to end is..

Serge.

...He was smiling in his vision and looking at him fondly.

He imagined the hand he hold was Serge's hand, nobody else.

Serge is the first person he ever truly loved, because Serge is also the first to see him beyond his beauty and reputation.

He know he loves Serge that deep..but his traumas are consuming him.

Though their stories are pretty short, at least Gilbert have learned how it feels to be loved and loved someone else not because of skin-to-skin contact only. Just pure Love and Affections. At least, he once have a place he can called 'home' and that's Serge Battour.

Serge may have failed in rescuing him, but he did not failed in healing tiny parts of Gilbert.
