Does anyone have any other photos or knowledge of instances of public bathroom shrines? Whether it's to fictional characters or deities, I don't care. I find them to be a fascinating example of semi-ironic folk magic.
I only know of this Megamind shrine and this Hatsune Miku corner, both presumably found in schools, plus the Danny DeVito one in a college bathroom. If you know of any others, please let me know, especially if there are photos.
Image 1: The corner of a bathroom, which has a tan tiled wall and a gray tiled floor. A piece of paper reading "THIS IS AN OFFICIAL MIKU CORNER, place offerings below" in a bold, white font hangs on the wall, with a picture of Hatsune Miku, an anime-style girl with two long, teal ponytails who wears some funky fashion that I admittedly don't know how to describe. Below the paper is an array of varying offerings: a small bag of nacho cheese flavored Doritos, a 'Premier' brand protein shake, various American coins, an unopened CapriSun, two visible tampons (still in their packaging), a toilet paper tube folded into a heart shape, and opened can of coke, and a black hair tie.
Image 2: A Tweet from alyssa, @livdeadgrll, reading "Megamind shrine in the girls bathroom at my school", with a photo of the shrine below. The photo shows the corner of a bathroom, which has a tiled wall. One half is blue, while the other half is white. The floor below is some sort of stone-pattern. A piece of paper with "MEGAMIND SHRINE" written across the top of it with black sharpie hangs on the wall, with a picture of one of the promotional posters for Megamind, a computer generated animated movie about an alien supervillain with blue skin and a massive head. Below the paper is an array of varying offerings: a bobby pin, a stick of gum still in it's silver wrapper, many various blue and/or white bead bracelets, a blue Push-Pop candy, some home-made Megamind button pins, a chunk of amethyst, a pile of various American coins, most notably quarters, a black hair tie, a travel-sized bottle of blue Crest-brand mouthwash, either a small wooden stick or a marijuana joint, yet another hand-made Megamind button pin, a safety pin with pony beads in the colors of the lesbian pride flag, and a small blue jar candle that has obviously been burned before. The offerings are book-ended on either side by un-burned white tea lights.
Image 3: A Tweet from @/DannyDeVito, reading "Your shrine honors me. My heart is filled with love and garbage. Tomorrow, as you may know, is my name day. Do something that makes you feel good. Above all, be kind to each other. Pick up trash, recycle, and be aware of plastics in the ocean." Below the text are two images connected to an article. The first image shows a tall, silver wall mounted trash can removed from the hole in the wall it's usually set within. The second image shows the interior of that hole, which hides a small shrine to Danny DeVito. The shrine has a picture of Mr. DeVito on the wall, as well as a smaller picture printed out and made into a standing idol. Various offerings surround the cut out, including cards and notes. The link to the Mashable.com article reads "A college bathroom hides a bizarre Danny DeVito shrine, and we have questions." The tweet is dated November 16th, 2018. /end ID]
The Megamind shrine definitely has more thought put into it. I wonder if, in another time, Megamind and Miku would be rival deities in some sort of pantheon?
