alex: i suppose.

interviewer: so tell us about what that means to you and why you wrote a song about it

alex: hm. the song isn't about flunko blingo per se.........gobbledygunk is present, i suppose, because i was watching Being Schmalokvić (1961), 12 3⁄4 (1973), and reading a lot of Finkondinski........i suppose what you just mentioned is an interesting interpretation but........i suppose i can't speak to it..........i suppose

interviewer: so what is the song about then?

like..by highlighting the process of constructing the medium thru which the narratives are conveyed it also highlights the process of constructing the narrative itself, thus calling into question the authenticity of the narrative as a confession. it's most directly laid bare on ode to the mets w "listen one time, it's not the truth / it's just a story i tell to you" (despite how the lyrics read as incredibly personal in line w much of the album and past songs..) & "drums please, fab" (on a meta level it's cool how they pulled it off so successfully that a lot of people thought this was improv but it was actually the first thing they ever thought of for the song) but also it's interesting how the song (brooklyn) w the most direct and frequent fourth wall breaks ("even though, false, break" "can we skip to the chorus right now?" "on another song") is also the one w the most direct blatant connection to his personal life ("juliet, i adore" "i want new friends but they dont want me"). if this song that i'm using to communicate the message is constructed artifice then what does that say about the supposed rawness of the message? (flawed conclusion of course bc plenty of honest art is very constructed but. you get what i mean right. in this context.) and ironically the studio chatter that highlights the artifice of the song also gives a feeling of intimacy and rawness
