"Give them back" by Mary Doodles
Living with three dachshunds for a multitude of years has me looking at this painting (which I really dig) like “oooh please be careful with her back”
This extraordinary statue from Naumburg Cathedral (Germany)
for years, the game Project Zomboid has pissed me off because approximately half of the female zombies i kill and loot have a "strapless bra" in their inventories. i believe this is casually misogynistic (in a negligent way, not a malevolent one) because most normal women in real life wear strapless bras maybe 4 times in their entire lives, generally to rare events like weddings or prom, and at almost no other time. ie, i will never just be hanging out in my house in a tshirt and jeans with a strapless bra on. never. so i am making this poll to email to the devs when i submit my second complaint about the strapless bra loot table drop rate. you can assist me by voting and reblogging. i added a bunch of options just for fun but the bra/no bra/strapless bra are the big three.
if YOU were turned into a zombie right now, and I caved your head in with a shovel, what kind of bra would i find on your corpse?
WOMEN: what kind of bra or chest undergarment are you wearing RIGHT NOW?
no bra, nothing under my shirt, or entirely topless
"NORMAL" bra: cups, shoulder straps, rib band, underwire or no underwire
STRAPLESS bra
sports bra
binder
bralette or similar item
binding tape, ace bandage or wrap
nipple tape or pasties
compression shirt or bodysuit
tank top/undershirt/bodysuit/leotard of some kind but no "bra" per se
i am not a woman but it's important that i get to participate
i dont have a torso, i am the Fresno Nightcrawler but i want my vote to be count
i am only half serious about this, but i am going to email the devs anyway. politely. because it does bother me. vote Fresno Nightcrawler for “none of the above”

Ok, so, bottom surgery recovery is going ~splendidly~ tbh, I’ve been off opioids basically all week, she’s healing well, she even looks pretty which at under the one-month mark is making me feel pretty optimistic. The only problems it’s giving me are that sometimes if I see something really gross it makes my body feel like it’s trying to suck itself inward from my vagina, like a black hole generated by the power of “ew ew ew,” and that healing is really tiring so I’m like…always sleepy. But tbh most of bottom surgery recovery has been peaceful, I’ve had a lot of time to do some self-reflection (which I hate, doing my own therapy as a patient suuuuuucks), BUT, I do have one funny story:
Right as I wake up there’s a nurse there who hustles over and says he’s glad he saw me wake up and tells me he’s giving me some pain meds and then he gives me IV Fentanyl and so I go from like “Ow ow ow ow awake awake awake” to “ooooooh fuck I’m floating on clouds made of rainbows” in like 6 seconds and so I was pretty out of it. The hospital had all the recently-post op patients all in one big-ass room, and they see patients for ALL sorts of surgeries, so I was next to an old guy who got his knee replaced on one side and some young 30-something dude with some kind of mechanism on his leg. So I asked him what happened since I was high as fuck and feeling kind as a result, and he said he broke his leg hiking off-trail when his leg went down a literal rabbit hole and snapped his shinbone. I say something like “damn dude that blowssssss” while giggling because I’m high as FUCK on actual fentanyl and he’s like “Yeah, for real, I’m feeling great right now though! What about you? What are you in here for?”
And I fully was not thinking like a person, I was thinking like a fentanyl-addled tgirl so I just go “Oh, haha, they cut my dick off!”
And he just kinda stops and is like “Hah-WAIT what? Why?” and I was trying to think of an acceptable answer to tell this cis guy because it’s dawning on me through my drug-induced haze that not everybody wants their penis gone and before I can think of a response two nurses just came up and…wheeled him away. Idk where to, and I don’t think he did either, because he kept looking back at me and frantically asking the nurses where they were taking him and I never gave him an adequate response so he probably thought he was gonna get that “Transgender for Everyone” shit before he was probably actually delivered to whoever his ride home was.

im not cis but one big area of my not understanding cis people is how does anyone find out you can just get a surgery to turn your dick into a pussy, or pills that turn you into a girl if you want, and not think "huh! neat!". and it never has to go any farther than that, because its not your business. thats how i feel when i find out about cool surgery im never going to get. but i guess i have an intellectual curiosity about the world idk

This is a dangerous sentiment for me to express, as an editor who spends most of my working life telling writers to knock it off with the 45-word sentences and the adverbs and tortured metaphors, but I do think we're living through a period of weird pragmatic puritanism in mainstream literary taste.
e.g. I keep seeing people talk about 'purple prose' when they actually mean 'the writer uses vivid and/or metaphorical descriptive language'. I've seen people who present themselves as educators offer some of the best genre writing in western canon as examples of 'purple prose' because it engages strategically in prose-poetry to evoke mood and I guess that's sheer decadence when you could instead say "it was dark and scary outside". But that's not what purple prose means. Purple means the construction of the prose itself gets in the way of conveying meaning. mid-00s horse RPers know what I'm talking about. Cerulean orbs flash'd fire as they turn'd 'pon rollforth land, yonder horizonways. <= if I had to read this when I was 12, you don't get to call Ray Bradbury's prose 'purple'.
I griped on here recently about the prepossession with fictional characters in fictional narratives behaving 'rationally' and 'realistically' as if the sole purpose of a made-up story is to convince you it could have happened. No wonder the epistolary form is having a tumblr renaissance. One million billion arguments and thought experiments about The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas that almost all evade the point of the story: that you can't wriggle out of it. The narrator is telling you how it was, is and will be, and you must confront the dissonances it evokes and digest your discomfort. 'Realistic' begins on the author's terms, that's what gives them the power to reach into your brain and fiddle about until sparks happen. You kind of have to trust the process a little bit.
This ultra-orthodox attitude to writing shares a lot of common ground with the tight, tight commodification of art in online spaces. And I mean commodification in the truest sense - the reconstruction of the thing to maximise its capacity to interface with markets. Form and function are overwhelmingly privileged over cloudy ideas like meaning, intent and possibility, because you can apply a sliding value scale to the material aspects of a work. But you can't charge extra for 'more challenging conceptual response to the milieu' in a commission drive. So that shit becomes vestigial. It isn't valued, it isn't taught, so eventually it isn't sought out. At best it's mystified as part of a given writer/artist's 'talent', but either way it grows incumbent on the individual to care enough about that kind of skill to cultivate it.
And it's risky, because unmeasurables come with the possibility of rejection or failure. Drop in too many allegorical descriptions of the rose garden and someone will decide your prose is 'purple' and unserious. A lot of online audiences seem to be terrified of being considered pretentious in their tastes. That creates a real unwillingness to step out into discursive spaces where you 🫵 are expected to develop and explore a personal relationship with each element of a work. No guard rails, no right answers. Word of god is shit to us out here. But fear of getting that kind of analysis wrong makes people hove to work that slavishly explains itself on every page. And I'm left wondering, what's the point of art that leads every single participant to the same conclusion? See Spot run. Run, Spot, run. Down the rollforth land, yonder horizonways. I just want to read more weird stuff.
gormenghast. a beautiful piece of classic fiction that utilizes prose poetry in such a way as to fundamentally alter the perception of the reader. its TRUE fantasy, without the set dressing and the crutches. fantasy as DAYDREAM. fantasy as reality, not as science. you can tell Peake was primarily a visual artist the way he paints with words.
on a related subject, i am of the opinion that what the average reader calls "realism" is less related to reality than the most abstract poetry. reality is not made up of color coded spreadsheets and neatly arranged dioramas where all motivations are clear and all plans are clean and efficient. reality is a series of messy disjointed dreams that barely form a narrative. if you want REALISM read ulysses

the late senator graham and i disagreed on pretty much everything, but credit where it’s due. this quote of his is an all-timer:
it’s arguably the most honest thing that anyone has said in politics.
