I know y'all did not read the books but Roald Dahl talks about this in the book. Charlie’s teacher points out the fact that unless you buy a shit ton of bars you’re probably not gonna win. Just like the lottery. Just like how all of the other winners of the tickets bought a shit ton of bars. Except Charlie, who just got lucky. And Charlie was originally black. Literally the whole point of the book was that wonka wanted to give the less fortunate a fair opportunity and it wasn’t fair because the system isn’t fair.
Stop the car.
Charlie was originally black?!?!
!?!!
He was and Mr. Dahl was forced to make him white. Also his widow has spoken and confirmed that as well.
So he was https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/09/16/551528425/roald-dahl-s-widow-says-charlie-from-the-chocolate-factory-was-originally-black
Dahl's widow revealed the surprising scoop on the BBC earlier this week.

When kids say they don't like to read, they’re not actually telling the truth. What they're really saying is that they don't like reading boring books. They haven't yet found the book that will make them fall in love with reading.
🌈💙💕This year marks the 50th anniversary of the pivotal Stonewall Riots–an uprising resisting police harassment and persecution against LGBT+ Americans. This year’s NYC Pride, dubbed #WorldPrideNYC, will be the largest international celebration of LGBT+ Pride IN HISTORY! In honor of this monumental celebration, Strand has partnered with @lgbtcenternyc for an epic Pride booklist. “Schools and libraries are the twin cornerstones of a civilized society. Libraries are only good if people use them, like books only exist when someone reads them.”

Participating in the Dewey 24-Hour Readathon
I've been readathoning since 2008. My kids were super little when I started and have been doing Readathon with me from the beginning, but now they are 10 and 12, so now it feels almost effortless (and indulgent!) because they can feed and amuse themselves while I read! The truth is, they have already read nearly all the books I will be reading over the 24 hours! =D
I have a well-stocked TBR pile: over 200 picture books checked out of the library, all starred reviews from the past year, in addition to nominees for various awards I read for. The night before the Readathon, I spend a few hours sorting through the pile and choose a couple favorites. I usually read about fifty books over the course of 18 hours, but I don't worry too much about quantity.
I bake a breakfast casserole (I suspect the recipe I use is still in the recipe feed!) and a batch of cookies the night before. I also indulge in purchasing some excellent cheeses, another Readathon tradition I love. Other than the cookies, I try to stay away from sweets because they dull my focus.
I have varied my social media engagement on the day of, but the last few years I have mostly stayed offline, and that has worked very well. I like having a cheerleader and I like running challenges, but I am easily distracted from reading, so I restrict my writing to two-sentence reviews on Goodreads and hourly check-ins on Twitter. I write a blog post at the beginning and the end.
I always have other commitments on the day of the Readathon, which is good! They provide me with some brain breaks and opportunities to get out of the house. I will also take a walk while listening to an audiobook if I find myself getting tired, or take a short nap.
You can sign up for the Dewey 24-Hour Readathon here: http://www.24hourreadathon.com/october-2018-reader-sign-ups/
Ready for a gigantic reading party? So are we! Join us on October 20, 2018 for a reading extravaganza! Do you have to read the whole 24 hours? NOOOO! Do what ya can. We’d love to have you! We will …
I’ll be mostly reading graphic novels and picture books, with a few others thrown in for flavor. Find me on Twitter!
Here we go again with round 1! So many graphic novels, so little time... What kids’ or teens’ graphic novels published between October 2017 and now are worth considering?
Congress passed an FY2018 omnibus spending bill today that includes significant federal funding increases for our nation’s libraries.
Great news - the FY2018 omnibus spending bill, including significant federal funding increases for our nation’s libraries, has been signed! It includes $9 million more in funding for IMLS, including $5.7 million for LSTA, and it restores $27 million for the IAL program!
Our work is never over. But, today, the persistence of library advocates has paid off for every single community in our nation. As ALA President Jim Neal said: “This is a time to honor the power of ALA’s advocacy.” #FundLibraries
