People post things every day about how lazy millennials are. How we whine, how we don’t care about anyone but ourselves.
People post about “lib-tards”. They post things assuming being a part of the Democratic Party must mean you’re stupid, or your too emotional.
People posted about Obama. About how he was a part of ISIS, how he wasn’t actually a citizen, how he was the worst thing to happen to our country.
Funny how we consistently saw our moral fiber and our president being talked down. How we put up with being belittled, how we still are being told our beliefs are wrong. How we were attacked for being too naive, too stupid to see Obama was ruining our country.
We still went to family events, we didn’t feel ostracized or like we were being attacked, even though our family and friends were blatantly belittling our beliefs, our generation, and our president on the internet. We didn’t take those things personally. We understood those were opinions, and we didn’t need to believe that in ourselves. We were stronger than the posts that we endured for 8 years. We knew at the end of the day our family loved us.
As millennials we are consistently told we complain too much. We were given too many participation trophies. We’re too soft, too open, too loud.
If you show people that their beliefs are based in things that make them uncomfortable they’re so willing to label you as crazy. They react to say you’re ostracizing yourself. You’re blaming them, you’re calling them racist for following Trump. If those posts make you uncomfortable it isn’t about me. It’s about you. Why are you throwing a fit? Why are you so weak? Why does that make you so uncomfortable?
This isn’t on me. My opinions don’t have to be about you if you don’t feel they match who YOU think you are. I’m not attacking YOU. I’m attacking the system that led us to a Trump presidency. I, myself, struggle with the systemic racism that has been engrained in me throughout my life. I am constantly put up against my own racism and bigotry. I am constantly learning to be better.
P.S. To use my mental illness as an excuse as to why I am so upset about what’s happening in this country is completely unfair. My mental illness has nothing to do with what I’ve told is being a “social justice warrior”. To be fair and just, to call out completely false and often racist posts has nothing to do with being depressed and anxious. I’m not schizophrenic, I’m not out of touch with reality. I am consistently trying to call out things I see that have no base in FACT. If that makes you uncomfortable, again, maybe that’s a you problem.
