Fish Who Can’t Breathe Water

It pisses me off so much to read a romance book with a female lead who is self-righteous and has golden morality. It confuses me “Oh, he raped me, but he doesn’t deserve to die! Don’t kill him!” Or “Oh, he enslaved me, sure, but death is too harsh!”

Like. Fuck that. And it is so common that it makes reading romance really hard for me. Your protagonist can be a good person and still have her own flaws (i dont think wanting your rapist or enslaver dead is a flaw but that’s me). She can be selfish and hateful at times. It doesn’t make her less….i dont know….feminine? Worthy?? Idk.

Because the dudes in romance books kill people all the time, they get mad or get even and oh that’s super hot, but the FMC doing the same is no good??? And OF COURSE the MMC(s) just think she’s an angel and respect her so much for not being bloodthirsty.

There is this weird like mould that FMC’s in romance books are shoved into. She is either morally superior to any actual human being and has a strange sense of leadership (even if she has no idea what’s going on) or she can be “psycho” and then she gets to kill people but oftentimes even then the author makes it so she tries to spare objectively awful people. Or the story eventually turns her into a goody-two-shoes.

I don’t know why women don’t get to have flaws or personality in fantasy or historical romance. I don’t know why they HAVE to be noble. It’s unrealistic. It’s insulting. And it makes no sense. Like how does letting a horrible character live help anything? And especially when they’re like a dictator or someone who is evil to entire class structures. “That doesn’t mean he deserves to DIE!”

This is a book. If the world is better off w/o them? Then YES they deserve to die. And even if the FMC doesn’t actually kill those that wrong them she can WANT to kill them. Her internal monologue can be realistic;

“God I really wanna kill this raping fucker but I know it would upset the world-wide economy or get me or someone I love killed. Maybe I’ll just paralyze him.”

I dunno. It just boggles the mind and makes me think these authors have never been truly wronged by another person. Like your thoughts do not a bad person make. Intrusive thoughts are a thing. And being actively tortured by someone gives you the right to want them dead. Do you have to kill them? No. But do you deserve revenge? Probably.

Why are women held to such an untouchable standard even in FICTION? Like wtf. She doesn’t have to be a saint to be interesting. In fact, I would argue it makes for a more compelling character if she’s not.

Just needed to spew that. Of course this is not every single romance book FMC but it’s been a thing in the last like 30 books I’ve read recently and it’s really starting to wear on me. I get if she’s a princess or a lady capital ‘L’ and she’s like been raised to be meek and/or forgiving. That makes sense. But why is the general format a morally superior heroine? It’s getting old. I cannot read “he doesn’t deserve to die!” one more time when the dude objectively deserves to die. Who is this for? Dudes? Romance is a genre geared toward women. Why do we have to be perfect to be loved or seen as worthy even in fucking books? Granted this is more common in like romantasy or historical romance but still. Ugh. I’m just annoyed.

The book I’m currently reading where this happens the FMC literally just met the MMCs (she is a servant) and all she does is go ‘oh no don’t kill him’ and this she whispers. And one of them describes her as FEROCIOUS and BRAVE. What?? Words have meaning. None of that makes her ferocious or brave. It doesn’t make her weak or a coward either but like. No. No. Sparing a horrible person doesn’t make her ferocious……noble, righteous, above-reproach, saintly, fuck idk CARING but ferocious? Where? How?

(“you’re not my girlfriend/boyfriend! You’re married to my brother/sister/dad/mailman!”)

then run out and disappear for a week or so. Next time you see them make sure to have Tinder date/best friend/paid actor beside you who knows the score and when they asks “what the fuck????” Simply look at them in confusion.

“So-and-so what’s-her/his-name? I haven’t seen you in years!” Make sure your companion reinforces the lie.

This can work with any movie that involves a wish gone wrong or alternate reality; Freaky Friday, 16 Wishes, It’s A Wonderful life etc. And any gender.

Of course this wont hold up under like any level of physical scrutiny (unless you take it way too far and like Mission Impossible their social media) but by then they aren’t going to try to get back w you because they think youre super messed up in the head. And they have a wild story to tell at dinner parties.

To be super honest I kind of……like Elias…ughhh. He’s a complicated man…being….creature? I’m not sure yet. But I’m on 98 now and the interaction w Melanie? I dunno. I like his, I wanna say, stoicism. I just….I vibe w the boss man.

Also, and I mean this seriously, is Martin like a magical creature of hope and positivity?? Cuz he has his moments of terror and despondency(?) (maybe too strong a word) but he’s such a lil trooper. Such a good bean.

And idk about you but to me that’s some good writing.

Also! I love like horror movies and creepy/disturbing media, but the last few years the horror movies I’ve seen? Trash. Like Brightburn?? Super trash.

The books I’ve read, marketed as horror i.e. I’m Thinking of Ending Things? Very unsettling and I liked it to a degree but it didn’t really give me the creeps or the scaries.

So it’s clear something is up w Sasha. Her VA def changed but the wiki only lists the one for her. I did not look further, I’m trying not to spoil the mystique for myself.

And Jon is going down a deep rabbit hole of paranoia and suspicion but oddly enough Sasha, who to me seems the most suspect, is the one Jon seems to have the least worry about. Even when she is found down in the tunnels or finds him he’s just like welp there’s Sasha. Guess its super normal.

I love that.

It’s like a hopeless warehouse 13 and i havent been able to sleep w/o my nightlight for a good week.

Okay *wipes sweat from brow* new info has come to my unobservant brain about the lore/story. So, tbh I have not yet read all the story from each Event/Chapter. There is a LOT and while I did make my account shortly after the game’s release I began as a very casual player. I thought Arknights was a very basic mobile game, like there’s a ‘story’ but I didn’t imagine it was as involved and enjoyable as it actually is. Suffice it to say reading the story at the time was not a top priority for me. 

I am slowly getting caught up but I want to go in order as I can get the full effect of the plot unfurling that way. I am not yet up to Invitation to Wine (played the Event skipped the story bits) where I discovered from skimming Reddit posts the brother who cooks has a name! SHU! I think. I did skim so I know A brother is named SHU but I’m not a 100% he is the one that cooks, although I do think SHU is known to be the youngest brother. This makes me very happy as it gives weight to my proposed sibling order. 

Now from what I read of the story surrounding the siblings on the wiki there is also a sister who died known as JIE. She is stated to be the villainous older brother’s third sister. Oh yeah, there’s a villainous older bro who wants to merge the siblings and get back to rampaging. That was pretty obvious all things considered so I will not be patting myself on the back for “guessing” that someone would want to merge them. I put that in “” because I just followed the breadcrumbs laid out by the writers. And it was already like available to read I just never got ahold of ti until now. BUT ANYWAY. I will get back to JIE and villainous older bro later on. 

Some more evidence that the sibling order I laid out is accurate. 

In Ling’s operator record, specifically in her Promotion File, it has Ling’s lore/story poem that talks or references or implies whatever about her in relation to the Dragon they split from and so on. Nian and Dusk also have these in their Promotion File’s and they correspond to where I believe THEY fall in the sibling order as well. But it begins by saying, 

“A beast sequesters lone. It sleeps with mount for bed It takes it’s number third...” 

This ofc implying that she is the third in the order of siblings to spawn from the splitting(?) of the Dragon. But although she is the third SIBLING overall she is the SECOND sister. 

Nian’s says,

“Their exists beats of chalk Their bellies a great furnace In nine they come Their horns like hot copper...”

Now this is a bit more iffy as it references a ‘they’ rather than a singular pronoun. However, ‘they’ can also be used to describe a genderless being and it would make sense that in her formative time Nian (they all) might have been considered genderless. I’m assuming the Dragon they spawned from also was a genderless other being, I think I’ve seen language to back this up but not sure. Therefore more backing that Nian is the ninth sibling overall. 

The part about “beasts of chalk” also can be referencing the fact that her aspected Dragon is mainly white in color. The “great furnace”/ “horns hot like copper” to me mark this as Nian much more definitively as a reference to her blacksmithing which is not a universal trait of the siblings as a whole.  

Dusk’s says, 

“The virid beasts. Like range on range Eleven told...”

We get where this is going. 

BUT WAIT! 

I now think only 10 of the Dragon siblings will be playable. Or, at least, if only 10 are playable it would make sense. I welcome all 12 ofc. 

The wiki talks about how the villainous older brother is older than Ling making him the FIRST BROTHER, the Second sibling, the one I listed who would have a birthday of February 2nd in my last post. It also says he’s an NPC, he’s split up into 108(?) pieces as part of his imprisonment by The Grand Tutor (not a 100% who or what that is), and that he doesn’t really get along with/like his siblings but that he can recite poetry with or talk with or tolerates LING and SHU. One such piece is the goblet evident in the IW Event, seen in the case with Lee in the PV, I believe. And again, it also states that the THIRD SISTER, the Fifth sibling overall, JIE, is dead. 

Now, Hypergryph is not adverse to the ‘power of friendship’ trope. While characters like FrostNova are villains they are, if not redeemed, seen as victims in the terrible ongoing conflicts as well and I think the Doctor even stays by her side as she dies and like Amiya is cool with her before her death. Or as she’s dying. BUT there are even playable Operators who were thought of as villains or anti-heroes; W, Lappland etc. They do not however, seek to like destroy the world or their siblings by merging into a conscienceless entity. I mean Lava like hates Hibiscus but I don’t think it’s homicidal yet. W was a double agent too so her consideration as a “villain” is thin. And so far as I know, no deceased characters have come literally back from the dead in the story or as a playable Operator. As stated I have not caught up to the story so might be wrong there. Thus while the ‘power of friendship’ defo exists here it is does not seem to have Deus Ex Machina levels of “power”.

This could also be backed by the fact that Nian and Dusk have a reference to the number 10 in their Promotion Files. 

Nian’s reference:

“Harken The forge of the sky Awaits five earthborn metals Among the ten peoples Walk beasts tenfold...”

Pretty straightforward. 

Dusk’s reference:

“Five arms, it spurns. Five fires, it falls...Once smoke recedes its two heads gone”

This idea is a bit farfetched but I think it is talking about the ten living siblings in groups of two and I think the reference to the “two heads gone” is evil bro and JIE. Maybe they both wanted to resurrect the evil Dragon they used to be. But she died and he is not even a person, he’s like 108 knickknacks. So it would make sense they would not be playable. On the face of it. 

I do think it’s possible that JIE is either not actually dead either because she faked her death to escape evil bro’s machinations or he or someone else imprisoned her somewhere OR that she can be returned to the land of the living. AND due to the possibilities often seen with the ‘power of friendship’ I think if the above is true, that JIE is still alive or able to be resurrected, that maybe the evil bro will become a playable Operator after his defeat. OR maybe this Grand Tutor guy keeps imprisoning evil bro because he IS NOT actually evil but is working against the Grand Tutor who IS THE TRUE VILLAIN! 

The thing that makes me think that he is possibly redeemable and therefore a possible playable character is that bit on the wiki, mentioned above, that says he gets along with two of his siblings. To my thinking if two of his siblings are willing to hang with him or even be in the same room without like calling the police means that maybe he isn’t irredeemable. Now that I think about it I think this was from a screenshot of some dialogue about him from IW I saw on a Reddit post. 

Idk. I like it, it all feels very probable but yeah. Idk. 

Edit: Yeah, so. Been informed that evil bro MURDERED Jie...redeemability has def gone down...and, as I said I skimmed, but I now think he USED to get along only with Ling and Shu...Still if he is like a red herring/scape goat I still stand behind the above theories of what could or did happen and his small potential of still being playable. 

Only time will tell. Unfortunately...

Okay, okay! I’m doing this for fun which is why my first post was a bit ignorant of the lore itself and any deeper analysis. HOWEVER, I went back through Nian, Dusk, and Ling’s operator records and read through everything. Well, everything  I could. Nian and Dusk are at 200% Trust but Ling is only at 64% so far. I don’t know or think that what I don’t have access to at 100/150/200% Trust are going to change the light bulb moment I’ve had so far but maybe it will. That will be a third part however. 

So! I am convinced that there are 6 sisters and 6 brothers and my previous color theory detonating age is kinda 86′d with my new theory but this one I think holds A LOT more water. 

Ling’s birthday is listed as March 3rd, Nian’s is September 9th, and Dusk’s is November 11th. This was too on the nose and really stood out to me. They say three makes a pattern and at first I was like nooooo it can’t be (I should have been able to tell by the fact that their Months/Days are all odd numbered, which to me implied that the 6 siblings with even months/days would be brothers) BUT then I laid it all out. Ling is the THIRD sibling, Nian is the NINTH, and Dusk is the ELEVENTH in the hierarchy. So Dusk and Nian, by this logic, are as close in age as I thought but Ling is much older than these two. Or if not necessarily older in years, then older in seniority. So, if I’m right (and this feels a bit on the nose so I think somebody has probably already come to this conclusion but like I said I do this for the joy of thinking out loud) that would mean the sibling order is as follows:

January 1st = Sister 

February 2nd = Brother

March 3rd = LING

April 4th = Brother

May 5th = Sister

June 6th = Brother

July 7th = Sister

August 8th = Brother

September 9th = NIAN

October 10th = Brother

November 11th = DUSK 

December 12th = Brother 

WHICH MEANS! Again if this is correct, which ya know, I think it is. This means that we will be having a youngest brother! YAY!! I also think, maybe, that Hypergryph will be releasing all the sister’s first and then the brother’s OR that they might go in batches of 3 --- so 3 sisters, 3 brothers etc. --- then again it is entirely possible they aren’t going to make it so matchy-matchy and that we’ll get them in no rhyme or reason based upon gender at all. Either is fine, but I would like one of the brother’s next tbh. 

I also think this 6 sister’s and 6 brother’s thing makes sense when thinking about the Dragon they split apart(?) from as this would show a proper balance of Yin and Yang energy. 6 siblings with natural Yin energy and 6 siblings with Yang energy would make sense as shards(?) from a complete being. Now, while I know Yin and Yang can be associated with feminine and masculine energy I don’t think they literally denote a woman or man specifically, I think from what little I know they can both be aspected in both genders. BUT whoever represents what I do think this does lend even a drop of credence to the 6 sister’s/6 brother’s idea. 

MOVING ON! My idea about Hypergryph wanting the siblings to be deployable as a balanced team holds more water now that I’ve got the number of siblings straight. As we all know there are 12 operator slots in each Squad, which means you'd be able to use them all as a team and I think that’s intentional. SO, it would make sense that their classes would reflect this sense of balance. However, and this next part is kind of up in the air but BEAR WITH ME---I think a big boss is going to be some fanatic or organization that wants to merge the siblings back into the rampaging beast they used to be---and if so the balance of the team of siblings might be based entirely on battling THAT out so the ‘balance’ there would be specific to that potential Event. A potential Event I think would be the New Year’s Event for the 12th sibling released’s banner. Of course all of the siblings will be Limited operators, from what we’ve seen so far, so I think like any Event that has a Limited operator available with mechanics that match well with said Event they aren’t required to defeat the Event I just think this sounds like something fun if it were to happen. 

If not I think the 4 classes most likely to have 2 Dragon siblings in each would be Guard, Defender, Sniper, and Medic. Again, based on what technically qualifies as the default of a balanced team and/or if the ‘balance’ is going to be Event specific it could go any way but this I think is a reasonable idea if not too simplified. Those, to me, are just the classes that people tend to bring multiples of in basic settings. I could also see 3 Defenders so that could shake the order up as well but ya know, just off the cuff. 

Now, FINALLY, while if I believe the sibling order is as listed above that means my previous color theory is trash I do believe a color schema for the siblings could still exist. 

My new evolved color theory is that each sibling has a Primary or Secondary color in their design and this is offset with White (Yang) or Black (Yin):

Red/White = NIAN

Red/Black

Blue/White = LING

Blue/Black

Yellow/White

Yellow/Black

Green/White

Green/Black = DUSK

Orange/White

Orange/Black

Purple/White

Purple/Black

*I no longer believe the Primary colored siblings are necessarily older than those with Secondary colors so this is not listed in the order I think the siblings follow. 

This makes a lot of sense as well as both Nian and Ling have White more heavily in their design rather than Black and they seem to represent traits that are commonly thought of as associated with Yang energy; basically warm and bright, outgoing or active etc. While Dusk whose Green color is offset with more Black than White like her sisters’ is more representative of traditional Yin energy; subdued, passive, cold etc. 

I know Dusk does have a White dress on but her overlarge Black coat takes up more of her design as does her Black hair. While Nian has White hair and more White overall despite the fact that the deep shadows in her design and like her black belt exist, they are still minimal in regards to the overall percentage of her design. Same with Ling, she has Black armguards(?)/sleeves and shorts, but she has Blue hair and a mainly White with Blue design. This is also a good representation of the idea of Yin/Yang which believes no one person has only YIN or YANG energy but a combo of both with one generally overshadowing the other. 

DISCLAIMER: This is oversimplified, I don’t know enough about YIN or YANG or the culture they come from to better explain myself but Yin and Yang energy are also heavily featured in the Events linked to the Dragon Siblings. So I think I’m on the right track. 

Does anybody else obsess about the Dragon siblings?? Ling is here, amazing btw, I love her Eng VA although her Chinese VA is good too BUT I digress.

I’m obsessed with the thought of them all. And I say siblings because in translations I’ve seen they refer to their other ‘siblings’ and not necessarily just sisters. I hope. Now this is a gacha game. Over saturation of girl characters is just to be expected so if the 9 Dragon siblings ALL end up being girls I won’t be disappointed but the idea of one or two brothers, at least, is appealing to me.

So we know there will be 9 in total. We have 3, whose color schemes so far fit with primary (sort of) colors in the sense of like graphic design, the ol’ RGB. Red = Nian, Green = Dusk, Blue = Ling. Ofc, we know this.

Now, I’m thinking the next sibling will have a yellow color scheme. Yellow is generally not a color that features heavily in the character designs. It’s not obscure by any means but its generally just accents (ex. Beehunter or Tequila) or muted (ex. Nightmare or Beeswax). I think, as someone who loves yellow that’s part of the reason I got really excited for Kazemaru. She has such a rich yellow and while it doesn’t take up the entirety of her design it’s the main character of it for sure. Better emphasized by the rest of her design made of neutral colors and that purple accent to really make it pop. BUT I DIGRESS…I think visually this just makes sense, they released RGB so it makes sense (to my lizard brain) to finish off with the final (actual—I’m not gonna get into the whole cyan, magenta, yellow thing rn—primary color) one. Before getting into secondary and tertiary color schemes. Btw I mention this because imo at least the Dragon siblings are the characters most heavily exemplifying one color in their design. This ofc does not include characters who dress in nearly all black as that is fairly common, overall in media, and to my eyes. I’m not even gonna get into how the possibility exists, in my theoretical outlook, on whether or not I think any Dragon siblings would wear all black in their design. I hope not, but the possibility exists that it could be done very well.

Moving on! This theory of the next sibling being represented by yellow could go out the window entirely if they decide to go with someone younger rather than another older sibling. At least to me they have gone very much by the color wheel in terms of the Dragon siblings, what color they represent, and what place in the sibling hierarchy they hold due to said color.

FOR INSTANCE! We know Ling is older than Nian AND Dusk (she’s referred to as their older sister) and we know Nian is older than Dusk (i dont remember if she says little sister when referring to Dusk but its evident in the way they interact, imo at least). Okay so so far that’s:

Blue/Primary = Oldest

Red/Primary = Old(er)

Green/Secondary = Younger

It would make sense to me that the 3rd oldest, or at least the third of the oldest siblings of them all, would be represented by yellow, as follows:

Blue/Primary = Oldest (potentially just Older)

Red/Primary = Older

Yellow/Primary = Older

Green/Secondary = Younger (than the primaries but potentially one of the older)

Purple (or Orange)/Secondary = Middle

Orange (or Purple)/Secondary = Younger

?/Tertiary = Younger

?/Tertiary = Younger

?/Tertiary = Youngest

However, following this logic if they choose to do another younger sibling rather than potentially the final of the oldest siblings, it could be any color. AND Ling is not, iirc, referred to as their oldEST sibling just oldER. So, let’s say they (Hypergryph) DOES choose to do a Black and/or White color scheme for a sibling(s). Those potential siblings, if following this sort of flimsy thread of color theory logic, would be the two oldEST.

But putting sibling hierarchy aside for a moment this, to me, would also be the perfect time to introduce the first of (prob two) brothers, this upcoming New Years banner. Because we have passed the first DS and the massive hype or joy that came w that. We passed the 2nd which sort of keeps the same energy but the excitements lost its edge and now we have Ling, probably the best utility (DP cost, versatility etc.) of the 3 so far so while we’re used to it now we still have that extra enjoyment coming from how awesome she is for her class archetype. Ntm her personality 10/10. To me it would just make sense to change it up with a male sibling. HOWEVER, if they only end up having one brother, it would make sense to release them in fifth place rather than fourth, have them be the breaker of potential monotony by putting him right in the middle. And ofc if it’s all sisters this gets chucked but it’s nice to think about. Or if they truly have a random or at least story driven (of which I as a consumer wouldnt be privy to until I read it in real time) method for how/when they release each sibling it could go seemingly any way.

Now, classes. We have a Defender, Caster, Supporter. Nian belongs to I believe one of the core class archetypes to have a Normal/Protector Defender, while AOE/Splash Caster and Summoner/Supporter are situational and optional, respectively. In terms of game strategy and like social media. Idk if the actual game itself lists these this way, just what I’ve seen online. So i have no idea if any of this comes into play (speaking of the references to Situational and Optional ik the archetypes themselves do) so i’m not going to go into class archetypes just the classes themselves. There are 8 classes in Arknights. If the Dragon siblings are each going to have a different class, w only two sharing the same one (in my mind it makes sense for Hypergryph to want all siblings able to be deployed as a well balanced team) then I think if we go in terms of popularity and just versatility it would make sense that two of them would be Guards. It’s by far the most popular class in terms of the number of operators in it and how necessary a role Guards play.

So hypothetically, that’s:

Defender - One (i think big potential for the 2 yet not the highest probability. Idk why)

Guard - Possibly Twice

Caster - One

Medic - One (2nd likely to have the 2)

Vanguard - One

Sniper - One (3rd likely to have the 2)

Supporter - One

Specialist - One

Now from here if we have one class that gets neglected and end up having 2 pairs of siblings sharing classes, I think the one to get neglected would be Specialist. Only because of how few operators there are and how niche they are and all that aside I think the possibility is unlikely. I imagine scrolling through classes looking for operators will please those collectors who get all 9, just seein a sibling in each category, so HG prob wont skimp in getting one in each. V flimsy but bear w me.

I would go more into personality potentials but this is supa long now. Just by the law of anime I believe we’ll be getting a mentally unstable sibling (prob w a Purple color scheme) and not like Dusk w her solitude and essential agoraphobia and her putting people into paintings I mean on the level of Specter or Lappland. Probably high energy, a psycho who Dusk really cannot deal with, who Nian laughs w or at, and who Ling keeps an eye on w more of a somber approach. I definitely think or hope we’ll be getting an adolescent sibling, girl or boy. I gotta say a cute younger brother type would be refreshing. And I love the dynamic of a younger brother w lots of caring older sisters or caring older sisters and being kind and sweet to his younger siblings. Like paying their care forward. If a younger adolescent sister type I like the idea of her coming to Rhodes and finding friends in Shamare and Suzu, maybe Popukar and Gummy too. Very wholesome.

Edit: I made this post after not sleeping for nearly 24 hours so I kinda lost some things in my brain fog BUT I realize technically Nian is mostly white in her design, her dragon is white as well, but to me her personality feels very red and the white of her design only serves to make the red stand way out. AND it was brought to my attention that she has a voice line about her brother. So there IS at least one. AND HE COOKS. This kind of lends credence to my yellow sibling theory as in advertising at least yellow is a popular color to use (generally in tandem w red) because it brings to mind…something. Idk I can’t remember but an example would be like McDonalds. I went to read it and it’s like the 3rd of all her voice lines and it never registered for me. And I’ve had her set as my assistant before lol.

Don’t do it. Do not spend money on Arknights. Save your OP and max out your orundum from Annihilation and pinpoint which operators on which banners you really want (sounds obvious but I know there are other ppl out there like me who think this is like any other gacha where you HAVE to spend money to get anywhere)

Once I learned not to rush and to stop spending my OP on stamina to level my operators, but to save it instead I stopped losing money to a game I loved and I spend less time on it. I love Arknights and grinding for hours can be fun but also mega frustrating. Especially when you’re filled w regret for spending OP only to not get enough manganese etc. anyway.

Don’t be a dummy like me! If you have to spend money in Arknights the monthly card is all you’ll ever need. Otherwise save your money. This is not Genshin, this is not FGO. Arknights is built so that F2P have a decent chance of getting and promoting great, even limited operators if you don’t waste your OP, you BUILD YOUR BASE RIGHT, and you focus on Annihilation. Your only roadblock is having patience.
