Okay, first Blossom Song Drabble Analysis, omg. But first, let me clarify that this isnât, like, totally in-depth or all that elaborate, itâs hardly even an actual analysis so much as it is me rambling and writing down the scenes that the lyrics put in my brain or drawing parallels or whatever else. Okay? And also I should've posted this two days ago but I got nervy about it and then busy and whatever else, but I'll also be posting another one later tonight hopefully, for funsies. Awesome, glad we cleared that upâGreat, letâs go!
Omg this is so exciting, anyway. So, the first fic I posted on ao3 was loosely based on the song âDirty Little Secretâ by The All-American Rejects in the sense that I listened to it on repeat while writing the fic, and it was one of several song drabble / analysis things Iâve been working on.
The VERY first one I actually did was for âLover, Youâre Shouldâve Come Overâ by Jeff Buckley, which I finished writing as a full-length fic and posted recently, and I figured I should post about that here because I want to and I think itâs fun and we should all think about Rosquez in relation to songs. For funsies, yâknow?
Also, I barely touched any of this up. Itâs mostly in its rawest form, the stuff straight from my brain that started the process of me actually writing the fic. So. Fun!
â âLover, You Shouldâve Come Overâ, Jeff Buckley
In my mind, this takes place post-injury; I donât know the exact timeline, but Iâm pretty sure Marc kept pushing after he hurt his arm initially, right? Like, from what Iâve seen of him (Iâm currently watching âAll Inâ right now), heâs dead-setâalmost, if not alwaysâon racing, even when itâs possibly detrimental to himself.
âLooking out the door, I see the rain / fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations / as their shoes fill up with waterâ
I canât help but imagine this is Marc, post-injury, when heâs in-between surgeries and canât ride, therefore canât run from the fact that at the end of the day, when itâs all said and done, heâs a manâa human. Heâs got weak points, heâs got vulnerabilities. He is not untouchable, no matter how many wins he has, or how fast he can go, or how good he is. Regardless of the fact that heâs proven himself over and over again, (he feels like) he hasnât done enough yet, but what is he meant to do if he canât keep going?
The fragility of his own mortality is something heâs both constantly (crushingly, now) aware of, but something he also refuses to confront until he absolutely has to. Sitting at home, arm in a sling, with his family fretting over him, he canât help but feel like a part of him is already dead.
Thisâbeing taken care of like heâs corpse in a funeral home, propped up and stiff and floating fuzzily from the pain meds heâs on, vaguely aware of the worried faces of his family and friends hovering over him, always hoveringâfeels like the beginning of the burial process that ends with him retired, forced into a grave but having some forty-something years to go yet before he actually belongs there
Impermanence, at the end of the day, is something heâs familiar with. Relationships come and go, loyalty comes and goes, and heâs NEVER enjoyed thinking about the fact that he wonât always be able to go on the bike the way he does now. OrâŚdid, already, maybe.
Itâs all heâs been able to think about lately.
âMaybe I'm too young / to keep good love from going wrong, / but tonight you're on my mind, / so...you'll never know
Broken down and hungry for your love / with no way to feed it
Child, ya know how much I need itâ
Post-divorce, pre-reconciliation. Heâs mid-injury, probably hovering just before or right after his final surgery, and heâs justâŚthinking. Way too much. Heâs reflecting, heâs trying not to let himself ruminate too hard on this possibly not working despite the promises of the surgeon and various other medical professionals who have worked on him, but the âwhat if?â just keeps creeping back into the edges of his mind.
Heâs, again, fuzzy with the pain meds, which is part of the reason he hates taking them so much (paired with the fact that they make him feel good, so good, and what does he do when theyâve all run out and heâs back to that same bearable-enough (he supposes), but maddeningly-dull pain thatâs always present?) and heâs thinking. Heâs thinking and he canât stop because he has nothing other to do than sleep, and heâs already done too much of that.
Heâs just thinking about Valentino. About before everything went to shit and they could still laugh together, talk together, hold a civil conversation without one of them sliding in a thinly-veiled insult or reference to some perceived wrong.
Marc doesnât like to let himself consider it often, but when heâs like thisâcracked open, carved out, and left highly prone to his own mind prying in on itselfâhe does wonder if maybe he made a mistake somewhere. He knows he did; he had toâve, because otherwise, what was the point of all of this?
Maybe it was the 2014 Ranch visit, or all the mess that followed, maybe he pushed too hard, wanted too much from himself championship-wise (again, I donât know all the history, Iâm just grabbing things from videos Iâve watched, the docu-series, and fics Iâve read which I know arenât a reputable source but Iâm not claiming any of this is true so pls pls pls no one bite my head off), but he justâŚheâs not sure.
He misses Valentino, maybe, like that small part of himself always does, even though he refuses to acknowledge it any other time. He misses Valentino, and heâs high on a something-codone opioid thatâs too strong because itâs making him think like this and dream things that make him wake up aching even though thatâs the whole reason heâs taking them, but thatâs more a Marc-problem than it is a medication-problem because the ache is throbbing deep in his chest and pulsing between his ribs, isnât it? Itâs not something a medication can take awayânot this kind, anyway.
Heâs tired, and stuck in that painless but not acheless place between being fully aware and half-asleep, and he just wishes. Wishes, wishes, wishes.
âToo young to hold on / and too old to just break free and run
Sometimes a man gets carried away / when he feels like should be having his fun
Much too blind to see the damage he's done, / sometimes a man must awake to find that, / really, he has no oneâ
Just driving home the previous point of Marc wondering what he did; if it was the visit to the Ranch, or the conspiracy of him plotting against Vale, or whatever. He knows heâs not entirely at fault, some days he struggles to believe heâs at fault at all, but the end result was still the same: he lost friends, he lost fans, he lost support from both, from everyone, and worst of all, he lost Valentino. He lost a lot. He doesnât like to think about it. But he doesnât have much else to do right now, does he?
âSo I'll wait for you, love, / and I'll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return?
Oh, lover, you should've come over / âcuz it's not too lateâ
Just, ugh. Yearning. Grieving. Bereavement of the highest degree. Marcâs been stuck in a state of cycling between missing, resenting, downplaying, over-exaggerating (if thatâs possible), and then missing Valentino for years.
He wants reconciliation, he wants forgiveness, he wants an apology, he wants Valentino to show up at his door and grovel and then he wants to turn the other man away because how could he ever let go of what Valentino did to him? but Marcâs not sure he has it in him. Not when heâs like this, anyway: soft, blurry, the edges of his stinging ire dulled down to something much sadder and quieter than what he wants it to be.
Deep down, he knows itâs not too late; he knows heâd forgive Valentino, probably too eagerly, or quickly. Maybe not eagerly. Tentatively, afraid of it biting him the way letting himself get caught up in Valentino did the first time, but still too fast all the same.
If it were up to Ălex or his mother, Valentino would be banished to the deepest pit of Hell, inside the circle of it where only traitors reside, for souls that betrayed those who they invited into their home only to snap down on them like a mouse in a too-big-to-be-noticed trap.
If it were up to Valentino, Marc knows, then he would be dragged right down into that ring with the Italian, the two of them suffering eternal damnation together for treachery neither one of them wants to admit to or take responsibility forâno matter how true or not.
But itâs not up to them, Ălex and his mother, Marc means. Itâs up to Marc, though he wishes it werenât.
Valentino, you shouldâve come over.
âLonely is the room, the bed is made, / the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams / he had you with himâ
Just more yearning. So intense that it makes it difficult for Marc to draw the line between reality and what his mind has conjured up between naps and daydreams, his brain addled in the week post-surgery where he just wants, and wants and wants and wants. He wants Valentino here, wants to be where Valentino isâwhether itâs Spain or Italy, or somewhere neutral, somewhere neither one of them have ever been or broken each other at. He dreams, and he wants.
âMy body turns / and yearns for a sleep that won't ever come
My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
All my riches for her smiles when I've slept so soft against her
All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
She is the tear that hangs inside my soul foreverâ
Now. Valentino POV, hear me out: as much as Marc yearns, Valentino does it tenfold. In the earlier years post-blow-up, he turned it all into anger. Disguised that want as hatred because Marc, for all his keenness and readiness to impress Valentino, traded whatever they were building between them back then forâŚat a certain point, Valentinoâs not even sure anymore, all this time later. Maybe he WAS in cahoots with Jorge Lorenzo, maybe Vale had been wrong about everything, but it doesnât matter. He treated Marc like it was true, so it had to be. It makes no difference now.
But then Marc went down that first crash, and everyone thought he was hurt and then he was fine enough to race, and then he went down again, he was hurt again, he was hurt and it was getting harder for him to hide it, and then eventually he just couldnât. It was over, until it wasnât, and he was back, and then he was gone. Possibly indefinitely, lucky to walk away alive given all the times the opposite couldâve happened, but Vale knows.
No racing, no Marc; his life may as well be over, if he has to walk away like that.
And Valentino knows: he wasnât lying when he said Marc was dangerous. To others, and to himself. Both are held together in the same space of existence of truth, inherently tied together. If youâre willing to put yourself at risk in a sport like theirs, then on some level, youâre putting everybody around you in it, too.
What happens if you lose control and send your bike flying into someone, or something else, anything else, a million other possibilities happen, an honest-to-god accident, but a horrible tragedy and loss all the same?
So, Marc is injured, and Valentino is getting older, and he hates himself for growing soft with age like a ripening fruit. Heâs becoming mushy, tender, dripping with feelings where heâs split at a seam he never quite managed to close up ten years ago, and heâs unfortunately not old enough to forget the memories he has of Marc.
Marc, on the podium beside him, smiling wide and bright enough that he could light an entire city up from the thrill of being up there alone; Marc, and that one moment they were on track, side by side, hands clasped together; Marc, and his open laughter; Marc, and his shiny, squinty eyes; Marc, in Valentinoâs motorhome, curled up beneath Valentinoâs blankets, wrapped in Valentinoâs arms.
Marc, warm and familiar a decade ago, but heâs grown colder over the passing years, withdrawn. A cage and collar with a short leash unto himself, his own keeper as much as the biting, scathing remarks from outsiders are, too. Heâs cautious, now. Guarded. And this, Valentino knows, is as much his fault as it is anybody elseâs. So he tosses and turns at night, and heâs grownânot more comfortable, butâmaybe resigned in the idea that itâs never going to end, his intrinsic tie to Marc MĂĄrquez. Even if it was hacked at and continues to be gnawed on. It hasnât been severed yet, and it probably never will be.
âOh, but maybe I'm just too young / to keep good love from going wrong
Oh, lover, / you should've come over, yeah, yes
Yes, I feel too young to hold on / and much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind to see the damage I've done
Sweet lover, you should've come over
Oh, love, well I've waited for you
Lover, love, love, love, love, love, love!
Lover, you should've come over / âcuz it's not too lateâ
Just more of the same points Iâve been droning on about, but itâs the last section that really hits me in the gut. The repetition, the stress on âLoverâ like a prayer, like a reminder, like a plea. âIâve waited for you,â and they both have. Marc, especially, always, he was never not waiting, and then Valentino later on, once heâs able to set his scorn aside and remember that once, he loved Marc. And then realize that still he does.
Lover, you shouldâve come over, and maybe, somewhere between Marc coming home from his final surgery and getting back on the bike, Valentino swallows his pride and hurt and reaches out. Somewhere, sometime, Marc is at home staring at the ceiling, eyes dry and sticky when he blinks, mind syrupy-slow, barely able to catch the buzz! of a notification coming through on his phone.
Somewhere, sometime, Valentino reaches out because thatâs what it takes to get this whole thing moving; Marc cannot keep pushing, cannot keep reaching, cannot keep stretching himself thin and then building his skin back up to the thickness it needs to be to keep from being punctured by the insults and the ripping and the shredding of Valentino and the media.
Valentino, somewhere, sometime, extends a gentle olive branch from the cover of Italy while Marc is in the safety of Spain, something simple. Maybe not even a message, nothing so straightforward as that, but a liked post somewhere. Instagram, maybe. Maybe Ălex sends Marc a screenshot of his notifications on Instagram, where the top and most recent one reads, â@/valeyellow46 liked your postâ accompanied by the message, âMarc? Why?â
Why now? Ălex means, Why this, Why him? And Marcâwhoâs waiting on the sofa for Ălex to get back because he had to go to the pharmacy to pick up Marcâs many prescriptionsâstares at the screenshot, knowing which post it was that Valentino decided to like. One updating the world on Marcâs health and recovery probably, but Valentino doesnât do that. He doesnât keep up on Marcâs good news, and if he does, heâs never been so brazen as to make it public knowledge.
And MarcâŚdoesnât know what to do with that. And heâs not sure he should do anything at all until his mind has been cleared of the permanent haze heâs been living in these past few days.
I donât know, maybe this is when Valentino strikes, maybe itâs later, maybe Marc confronts him and asks what the hell he thinks heâs doing and Valentino, awkward and guilt-repressed and emotionally-stiff as he is, has a stilted roundabout answer that Marc doesnât trust, but canât completely refute.
Who even knows, really? Whatever it ends up being, it doesn't matter. This song just so perfectly fits them and all their undeniable tragedy.
â âLover, You Shouldâve Come Overâ, Jeff Buckley
Anyway, this was Rosquez as âLover, You Shouldâve Come Overâ by Jeff Buckley gifted to you by yours truly, I canât believe I turned this into a multi-chapter fic. Jeff Buckley, thank you for your sorrowful voice full of yearning, and another thank you to Rosquez for being tragic, helpless, upsettingly-human idiots.
Next one will be either ' Vacillator' by Ethel Cain or 'You Forced Me To' by Lizzy McAlpine if I wanna post another angsty one, or I could do some lighter ones 'cuz I have a few of those too!!
