okay i think the eye popping out is hearsay at best but according to these articles that @kingofthering found (here and here, translated from french) and this image of baby marc w his eyepatch #hiseyepatch, i think it’s safe to say that marc’s been dealing with diplopia since he was 14
the press release for the race (archive link) mentions the diplopia and its cause- traumatic fourth nerve palsy (damage to the fourth cranial nerve caused by the fall, resulting in paralysis of the corresponding eye muscle)

this interview is from 2015 after valencia on the italian show striscia la notizia by valerio staffelli. but i found marc's answers just. oh wow okay, for lack of better words, so i'll share some moments that stuck out to me
i do think marc has always had at least a little bit of natural pr. and esp after joining honda he was able to handle himself well with the media, so i won't say that this is him being completely truthful about his feelings (which are. complicated) but it's obviously layers deeper than the mask we see now!!

So, in Tolkein lore, the world was originally flat, with most of the land in the middle (hence Middle Earth). But the Numenorians (men who were rewarded with their own Atlantis-equivalent island for service in the first big war against Melkor, but eventually Power Corrupts etc) tried to invade the uttermost west which was basically Elf Heaven. To put an end to that sort of thing, the creator of the world Bent The World and made it a sphere…but left elves able to treat it like a flat disk. So elves can sail west and reach Elf Heaven, but a man or dwarf or hobbit who sails west will eventually wrap around to the east coast of Middle Earth.
