Kai is a clever bastard and I love him so much. A lot of background story reveal here, but itâs worth it, I promise.
@badthingshappenbingo : lured into a trap, original fandom
Previous - next - masterlist
It was horrible, really. Kai couldnât help but tense like a bowstring, wrists chained against the sides of the tub, the water perfectly warm and deceptively soothing. He complied with the angelâs wordless orders - a small pushing of his limbs on one side, then one other, Kyriel passing the sponge gently all over him in places he hadnât reached before, washing away all signs of torture - sweat and blood falling away with the soap.
All the while, he kept touching him. Kai shivered and tensed every time, keeping his mouth firmly shut, not a single sound of discomfort making it through.
âMove forwards,â Kyriel ordered, fingers gently pushing on one of his shoulders. âI need to do your wings.â
Kai tensed, the prospect of the sponge going through his open wounds making his stomach twist. He could feel his injuries having mostly closed by now, but there was a clear limit to what his power could go to. Heâd stopped bleeding, his magic healing the muscle and any injury deeper that a few millimetres, but his skin⌠He remembered the net flaring over it. Everything below it still belonged to him, and anything outside of it was under Kyrielâs control. Which meant that heâd healed, but only the lower level of the injury, the outer one still open and raw.
He swallowed, obeying without a comment. He leaned forwards, unfurling his wings behind him.
Kyriel started washing him slowly, surprisingly gentle.
âHow was it, adjusting to the wings?â
Kai realised that was a question he was expected to answer to. He blinked, surprised. Heâd expected some - Kyriel having been obsessed with him from the very first time heâd seen him, a human boy with a curse locking god-like powers inside him - but not this one specifically. In all fairness, Kai hadnât been born with wings, the power inside him belonging to a real angel, his soul and memories and power locked inside a human shell, a special punishment for his falling. Which meant Kaiâs wings had grown as heâd grown into his power himself, putting him in the unique position of knowing what it felt - to have wings, and not have them both.
âHeavy,â he admitted, slow. He carefully kept his tone neutral, not giving any hints that growing wings had been the best, most exhilarating thing that had ever happened to him, their presence such a core part of his identity now. âThe back muscles took a while to build.â
Kyriel laughed, softly, behind him.
Kai swallowed, relaxing an inch. The water was warm over his skin, Kyriel careful, so careful, washing him with tender care. The bath didnât seem to lose heat, no matter how long they stayed in there, the fire warming the air up from its corner. There was a pleasurable smell coming from foaming bowls left on the floor, a flowery and fresh scent.
âI would have liked to teach you how to fly,â the angel mused, after a second. He passed the sponge over a sore muscle, the skin closing as he did so, allowing the magic to do its job. Kai gasped, shivering in relief, the pain dissipating with a pass of the angelâs hand. âYour technique is⌠Fine, now, but you did look like a chicken the first time I saw you fly.â
Kai repressed a smile, biting his lip. Heâd learned on his own, in the first months free, Ashe at his side but unable to help. Heâd been terrified, both of them running, in hiding, his memories of his life before death painfully clashing, overlapping, with those of the years spent as a loved pupil under his masterâs thumb. Heâd been twelve when heâd been taken, barely more than a child, and the angel had been like a father to him - only the occasional punishment, for Kyriel hadnât needed to. Kai had adored him, had fallen over himself to please him, to excel in anything the angel asked him to.
He hated to admit to himself he would have loved to have had his Magister to help him with that new part of him - wings, flying, living as an angel.
Kai straightened, forcing himself to tense again. He couldnât lower his guard - he expected an interrogation, to be grilled on his every move taken in the time outside Kyrielâs control, the angel trying to fill the gaps in his mind. He knew what the princes planned, the leaders of the remaining human lands, coalesced in a desperate coalition of kingdoms as Kyrielâs empire expanded, a metastasis on the land. There were battle plans heâd been pry to, knew where the pockets of resistance in the angelâs land were, and the habits of key targets the angel might have liked to kill. And he knew, most importantly, that those questions, the soft ones, were meant to put interrogation subjects at ease, making them open up. Once the first words were uttered, it was hard for people to stop talking.
Shame that Kyriel had taught him too well, and he knew what to expect now.
âYeah, well,â he mused, light, keeping his tone perfectly respectful, only the slightest barb in its undertone, âI would have liked to have the time to learn how to fly properly under the right circumstances. I was a bit busy trying to stay alive, though.â
Kyrielâs fingers tightened on his arm, where heâd left his free hand resting.
Kaiâs alertness shot to the roof, hair raising on his neck and arms at the touch.
âYou did more than that,â mused the angel, his own tone equally deceptively light. âYou didnât just run. You joined the humans in their fight.â His nails dug painfully in his flesh, drawing blood. âYou defied me.â
Kai tensed, swallowing dryly. He was aware, terribly aware, of the thin line he walked on. He fixed his eyes to a point on the wall in front of him, trying to keep himself balanced.
âAnd you murdered me.â He whispered, and he was proud that his voice didnât break - even as the memory was still fresh, terribly fresh, even all those years later. The feeling of death⌠He shrugged, forcing his shoulders to relax despite his instinct screaming, easing himself into a mask of carelessness like a glove. âI think thatâs a tad worse, Magister.â
Kyrielâs made a incongruously frustrated sound, the sponge dropping into the water. He picked it up again, beginning to aggressively scrub at Kaiâs shoulder. The boy winced.
âI freed you from your curse.â The angelâs voice was clipped. âI released your powers, your potential. And then I took you in - trained you.â
Kai didnât answer, repressing a laugh.
He made it sound so charitable, didnât he. Taking a orphan in, never mind that he had made him one. Never mind that heâd hunted him, killed him, and then brought him back. And to avoid having to deal with the inconvenience of a weapon who remembered him as the villain, Kyriel had erased his memories and played good master for a while. Until Kai had remembered, had dared to hope for something different for himself - and so the angel had dragged him back, killing his wife as punishment.
Kaiâs eyes filled with tears, hot and angry. He willed them away, his body tense, back straight as a rod. Kept quiet, anything he could say now only leading to punishment - either a lie, or a fight brewing.
Kyriel started slowly cleaning his wings again, blood washing away with each soft stroke. Kai shivered, the pleasure of his wounds closing warring with the intensity of having his wings touched so. He closed his eyes, shivering.
Kyriel wasnât fucking done tormenting him. If not with whipping, then with words.
âDo you miss it? Your time as human?â
Kaiâs stomach dropped, feeling as if a blade had come through his lungs. He opened his eyes, suddenly alert again.
âNo,â he whispered, hoarse.
Kyriel hummed, the sponge lowering to the longest feathers, at the bottom of the wings. The wounds knotted close beneath his touch, the boy repressing another relieved gasp.
âLiar,â he purred.
Kaiâs fingers tightened around the edges of the tub.
âIâm not lying.â He swallowed. He didnât want to start screaming quite yet, which was almost inevitable if Kyriel thought he had broken a rule. His brain whirred to find a thread to spin his words into something believable, a tale that could be bought. âI didnât want to come the first time around either,â he croaked, slowly. âBut this time - you had to fight to catch me. Have to fight still to keep me down.â The words tasted sour in his mouth. âYou just had to break my leg to stop me from running, the first time around. I donât miss that.â
His mind flashed, the memory terrible, to that night almost fifteen years ago. The angelâs magic wrapping around him, lifting him off the floor, snatching the air out of him with a dark vine around his throat. How heâd struggled - human, child, helpless - uselessly. His bone had snapped so easily after heâd tried to bolt anyway, the angel making sure he would be too slow to ever escape him alive.
Kyriel hummed, pensive.
âAh, the helplessness then.â Kai hated how it sounded he was making a mental note, filing that tidbit of vulnerability away to use later. âBut I thought you would have missed your simple life without responsibilities that comes with it, though.â He smiled, cruel. âNo power. No world to be saved, if you canât do anything about it. And you are irredeemable like that, loving the little people, always begging to get back to be them.â
The stab in Kaiâs lungs deepened, the blade twisting.
Letâs run away, Ashe had whispered. Theyâd been children, a witch and a cursed child growing on the side of Kyrielâs forest. Your curse canât catch you if we keep running.
What if it catches you?
Iâm strong. It wonât.
Except it had, fifteen years later.
Kai blinked rapidly, fighting the tears filling his eyes - the memories of his grandmotherâs hut filling his mind. His village. His people. His father, his sisters, dead by Kyrielâs hand, so, so long ago.
He was grateful the angel was behind him, for the time to recompose himself before he could see his weakness, naked on his face.
âHow was your mother called, again?â
Kai closed his eyes.
âSheâs long dead,â he croaked, and was grateful his voice only sounded the slightest brittle. âToo long for you to raise her flesh again.â
âThatâs not what I asked.â
But Kai knew why Kyriel ventured with these questions. His brain whirred over and over again, weighting words, seeing and planning and scheming in his head against different traps the angel could be laying in front of him. Trying to keep one step ahead, to foresee his next strike.
Still, this one was safe enough, his mother and sisters and anyone he cared about really too long dead for Kyriel to be able to do anything about it. All but Ashe, but he couldnât think about it, least the darkness opened wide beneath his feet, gnawing him whole - everyone elseâs flesh had long burned, their spirits passed to the next stage.
âThyra,â he said, finally. âHer name was Thyra.â
âMmm. And your sister?â
âWhich one?â
There was a flicker of surprise in Kyrielâs movements, the sponge twitching for an instant against Kaiâs skin. There had only been one getting in his way, and heâd assumed she have been the only one Kai had. He remembered, faintly, going through her body when sheâd put herself between him and Kai, her little brother running away in the snow.
âHow many did you have?â
Kai straightened. So he hadnât known.
âSeven. Eight, perhaps, Iâm not sure.â He shrugged, feigning carelessness. âMy step mother was pregnant when I ran away. The curse threatened to make her miscarry, and I wouldnât have that.â He shrugged again, shoulders loose, most of his back closed up again. âCould have been a boy. I donât know.â
âYou were your fatherâs only son?â
âA bastard one. It doesnât count.â
There was a moment of pause, Kyriel considering. Kai realised he could have never known about his past, not this way - not when heâd erased his memories after killing him, and hadnât interrogated him on these details when heâd been busy breaking his curse. Werenât relevant then, the things heâd cared about, the people heâd loved.
His stomach churned, knowing exactly why the angel enquired now.
âAnd why are you so sure I canât catch them?â Kyrielâs fingers grazed Kaiâs back, the remaining open wound of it, and this time he didnât heal, but dug a nail in. The boy stiffened, chocking down a scream. âDoubting the reach of my powers?â
Kai gasped, fighting through the red haze in his vision. He laughed, hoarse and incredulous.
âYou donât remember?â He hissed, knuckles turning white around the tub. The metal groaned against his hold, his strength slowly returning the more he healed. âYou killed them. You killed them all, trying to catch me.â His eyes filled with tears again, his teeth gritting, throat closing. âYou cut through Freya, and let your monsters loose next. On the whole village.â He swallowed. âAnd then I burned it all. When I was on the altar. Once you forced my power out for the first time.â
Kai hadnât had a choice. The power had not been his to control yet, the angel breaking his curse through releasing all the energy, magic, and tragedy that had been penned up beneath his flesh. It had been an explosion as the world had never seen, Kaiâs power releasing in all its might from his chained position on the altar - a dome of blinding light, engulfing all, miles and miles and miles of it, reducing to ashes anything it touched. Destroying half of his region before killing him, his human flesh unable to withstand that degree of power.
If any of his people had survived Kyrielâs first killing, Kai had made sure theyâd burned for good, not even a bone to retrieve.
He thought he heard the angel chuckle, behind him.
âYes, that squares,â he said, voice laughing. âA bit hard even for me to retrieve.â
Kai was struck, again, how much he wanted the bastard dead.
Kyriel smiled, lowering his palm against the back of Kaiâs neck. Warm, possessive. Making it clear Kai had to withstand the touch, be a good boy, or else. âWant to cry a bit about it?â He grinned, taunting.
Kaiâs arms yanked against the tub, suddenly and violently. A pointless, childish reactions, the chains holding against the pull, the metal not even groaning as it did under his fingers a few minutes before. He repressed a hiss of rage, his vision swaying.
The angelâs fingers tightened around his neck, suddenly harsh, keeping him down. Kai froze, heart in his throat, arms shaking.
âCareful,â Kyriel murmured, dangerous, amused. âYou were doing so well.â
Kai closed his eyes, humiliation warring with his rage.
âFuck you,â he hissed through gritted teeth. Tears bit at his eyes again, the boy fighting them. âSir,â he added, last, for he wasnât stupid, and he didnât want to hurt.
Kyriel laughed then, rich and booming, the sound reverberating in the small space. The boy winced.
The angel let go of his neck, shaking his head.
âOh, thatâs just perfect.â He grinned. âVery clever, my boy. Well done.â
Kai didnât answer, breath coming short and ragged through his chest. He closed his eyes, pushing his anger back - he was going to kill the fucker, he was, but not with his hands chained, his back still half open. He forced his composure to return, clawing tightly at his emotions, his reactions. His arms stopped shivering, his breath quivering slightly.
âCan we stop?â He asked, hoarse. He felt so tired, suddenly, even the bath no longer pleasurable. He forced his fingers to unclamp from the borders of the tub, his previous strength gone, the metal harshly bent beneath his skin. âEveryone I care about is dead. Congratulations. I donât want to talk about the past.â
Kyriel caressed his head then, slowly brushing through the boyâs hair. As if Kai was a kitten, a tamed thing. The boy shivered, biting down a sharp comment, refusing to flinch back from the touch. His skin crawled.
âVery well. Why donât you show me how much youâve learnt then?â Kyrielâs voice was smooth, deceptively peaceful. âRepeat your rules back to me, until you have them perfect.â
Kai gritted his teeth. Still, he relaxed from when heâd tensed, having expected a ridiculous, impossible to fulfil request. His mind grasped at the memory, the words, relieved.
He repeated his rules to the letter, exactly as Kyriel had first uttered them in the clearing, voice flat yet impeccable.
The angel blinked, surprised. He hadnât expected him to manage at the first try.
âShould I go again?â The boyâs voice was sweet, almost saccarine, anger churning in his belly. âOr did I earn the right to some bandages, sir?â
The angel hit him on the back of the head, not appreciating the sarcasm. But his other hand hoovered over the remaining of his prisonerâs open wounds, from top to bottom, the skin closing under his fingers. The back, and wings both, making his pupil whole - a clean canvas, ready for him to go again.
The boy gasped, shivering in pleasure. His whole body relaxed, free of pain. He let himself fall into the water, head dipping back over the side of the tub.
Kyriel carded his fingers into Kaiâs hair, almost gently, until his neck was craned back, facing him. He let go of the sponge.
âHow clever you are, when you want to,â he purred, smiling, a dark glitter in his gaze. He picked his knife with his free hand off the floor - the one heâd used to cut Kaiâs clothes off, the blade short, sharp and glinting. âShould we test how much you remember from your lessons?â
Kaiâs mind flashed to the thousand of pages of biology, classics, strategy and medicine the angel had made him study under his care. Philosophy, history, politics, maths, magic and religion, all of it swirling in his mind. It had been easy learning then, tutoring under the angel a pleasure and not a punishment.
He fixed his eyes on Kyrielâs face, unafraid. Not reacting as he trailed the blade on his exposed throat, slowly, down his collarbone.
The monster smiled. âA cut for every answer wrong, then?â
Kai forced his body to relax, making himself perfectly pliable, not an ounce of resistance against Kyrielâs hold. His eyes met the angelâs, clever and cold.
Languid.
âWe might. But it would defeat the purpose of the bath, wouldnât it?â
Kyrielâs lips curled upwards, amusement glinting in his eyes. He pushed the knife down, just a dip, against Kaiâs collarbone. Opening skin.
The boyâs breath hitched.
Kyrielâs eyes darkened, hungry.
âIt would,â he admitted, murmuring low. He pushed the knife away, the movement slow as if it costed him, lowering it onto the ground. âChange of plans. You are not going into a cell tonight.â He let go of his hair, standing.
Kai forced himself not to swallow, eyeing the angel with open eyes. He forced himself to keep looking relaxed, only polite curiosity on his face.
âOh? Iâve been that good?â He didnât hide the pungent sarcasm, letting some of his anger show - but he stretched, like a sleepy cat, within the limits of his constraints.
Kyriel smirked. His eyes took in his pupilâs slender, powerful form, his non threatening pose. The arrogance, still, he couldnât disguise, virtue of the sheer power rushing through his veins. A collared puma, purring to his master.
âYou might have,â he conceded. His fingers itched to grab at him, pulling him close. He snapped them instead, Kaiâs wrists unlocking from the tub. âContinue behaving, and youâll be chained to your own bed tonight, in your chambers, instead than in the cell I had prepped for you.â He smirked. âIâm not sure you would have liked that.â
Kaiâs gaze lowered. He let his face pale, appropriately chastised, slowly massaging his wrists. He moved slowly, not daring to stand without being explicitly told. He glanced up, almost shyly, looking at the angel from under tick eyelashes, silver eyes wide and wary.
He licked his lips.
âIâm not stupid,â he whispered, hoarse. âYou know that.â
Kyriel lifted an eyebrow.
âOh?â
Kai swallowed, throat dry. He looked at the angel, almost pointedly, then away. As if ashamed, warring with himself. âI donât want to hurt.â His face twisted, sour. âNot if I can help it. Not if there is no point.â
Not if Kyriel was going to get what he wanted anyway, the question only being how much Kai would have screamed before either consenting or breaking.
The angel relaxed, satisfaction pooling in his stomach. He leaned to ruffle his pupilâs hair, the movement warm.
Kai froze, as one might freeze when nuzzled by a big, big predator. His stomach squeezed, shoulders tensing, face flushing red.
The angel grinned.
âVery well, then,â he conceded, standing again. He took a towel off the ground, unfolding it. âStep out, now. Let me dry you up.â
Kai let the flush creep further up his face, his shoulders tensing. He swallowed, lowering his gaze, moving uneasily in the water.
âI might need some help,â he admitted. His voice was hoarse, fingers trembling slightly. âIâm not sure how strong I am, still.â
Kyrielâs grin widened.
âWe will fix that, donât worry.â He folded the towel on one arm, offering the other one to his unchained prisoner, for him to lean on. âIâll catch you if you fall.â
Of that, Kai had no do doubts.
The boy took the angelâs hand, his hold reluctant, wary. As if he was scared the angel would let him go, or grab his wrists and twist, make him scream with his touch alone. All very realistic possibilities, but Kyriel only clasped his fingers, hold tight as irons, and helped him hoist himself off the water - eyes roaming all over his naked body, flush and crimson. Hungry, taking him fully in.
Kai shivered, shame creeping oily over him. Still, he forced himself not to flinch away from the angel. He kept his eyes resolutely on the floor, as it was proper anyway, and stepped out of the tub. His breath came short, the boy not fully able to hide his panic.
And then he stumbled, swaying on weak legs, falling on one knee.
The angel stepped forward, immediately leaning to help him up.
Kaiâs fingers closed on the handle of Kyrielâs discarded knife, left on the floor next where heâd fallen. He lunged, burying it to the hilt inside the angelâs chest. Lurching forwards, driving the blade hard into his heart, meeting him halfway as he leaned down towards him.
Kyriel widened his eyes. Blood rose to his lips, gurgling.
Kai twisted the blade into the wound, hard.
âGo to hell,â he whispered, hoarse.
Then, he bolted.

got a little obsessed with this idea. king whumpee and gray eminence whumper who is very displeased to have been disobeyed. publicly.
cw: royal whump, covert whump, manhandling, mentions of punishments
The duke holds the door open for him, a charming smile for the crowd. He bows his head when the king climbs in, also smiling at the crowd. They sit across each other, and the duke keeps one of the curtains open for the prince to smile and wave at the mass as the carriage starts moving.
He only lets go when the crowd has thinned, but his smile is gone long before that. As soon as the curtain has closes, the king sinks to his knees. Thereâs not much space in the carriage and his nose brush the archdukeâs knees as the man spreads his legs.
âI apologise, Your Grace.â
The dukeâs eyes turn towards him with a glint of something cruel as he evenly says, âWhatever for, Your Majesty?â
Truthfully, he doesnât know, but thereâs only so many things he could have done that would make the duke so angry. He speaks clearly, knowing better than to stumble over his words.
âI went against your will. I didnât think-â
The dukeâs hand moves and he flinches, expecting a hit. It only tangles in his hair, pulling his head up sharply. The duke doesnât look composed anymore, and his voice is not so even as his lips curl into a sneer.
âYou were never asked to think, were you?â
The tight space of the carriage makes it feel as though he is looming over the prince when he leans forward.
âOpposing me so publicly â Did you think you were allowed an opinion on my decisions? That you could⌠express it? Publicly?â
The hand in his hair tightens its grip and the duke shakes him a little. He doesnât even try to speak to defend itself.
âI think not. I think His Royal Majesty simply forgot his place.â
The king swallows. He tries to lower his eyes, but the duke grabs his chin, nails almost digging into the skin â but not yet; thereâll be another crowd at the palaceâs gates.
âMy apologies, Your Grace. I didnât- I didnât realise it meant so much-â
He canât flinch away from the slap. Itâs almost a relief that the duke has let go of his hair, both because his neck and back were starting to hurt and because thereâs no way he could have dressed his hair again if it became too dishevelled. He doesnât have the luxury of another blunder right now.
âYou naĂŻve little fool. Everything I do means something. Every. Single. Thing.â Every word is punctuated with a sharp squeeze of the hand holding his chin, and the king assumes itâs already reddened. He canât feel crescent-shaped thing digging into him yet, which should make it easier to hide.
The duke is in control enough â and kind enough â to not backhand him. There are no rings to scratch at him, and he shouldnât bruise from this.
âI donât know whatâs gotten into that pretty little head of yours, but weâre going to fix it.â
Another flinch from the king, who forces himself to meet the dukeâs eyes. âPlease, Your Grace, I swear-â
The duke surges forward, pulling the king along. The king is slammed against the carriageâs wall, pinned under the dukeâs frame. The duke is still holding his chin, but his other hand trails down the kingâs chest, fingers splayed possessively.
âYouâve been such a wicked ward, havenât you? Teasing me, defying me, making such a spectacle of us both.â He presses close, lips brushing the shell of the kingâs ear. âDonât worry, Your Majesty, Iâm going to take good care of you. Do such a good job reminding you of your place.â
He keeps the king pinned a while longer before relaxing his grip and stepping away. The king sinks back to his knees, burying his face into the dukeâs robes.
âYour Grace, please-â
âThatâs more like. This is the respect you should have shown to me earlier.â He buries his hand in the kingâs hair, almost petting. âShh, thereâs no need to cry. Iâll guide you. Put you back into your proper place.â
He tilts the kingâs head up with a brush of his knuckles. âItâs my responsibility â my right â to discipline you when you stray.â His thumb brushes softly over the kingâs lower lip. âWeâll work together, you and I, hmm?â
âPlease-â
The duke tries to maintain his façade but his eyes glitter with satisfaction, something almost predatory in the way he looks down. He loves seeing this â a desperate, submissive king, completely at his mercy and grovelling for forgiveness.
âShh. I told you there was no need for his.â
His hand moves from the kingâs chin to his throat. His grip stays lax, more possessive than anything else.
âI suppose itâs been a while, but thatâs no reason to behave like this.â A sharp squeeze to make the king meets his eyes. âWhen we arrive, youâre going to walk beside me; head held high and that pretty smile of yours for the crowd.â
His grip tightens a little as a flash of anger darkens his face. âIf you even think about disobeying me again, so publicly at that, I will destroy you. Is that clear?â
The king swallows, throat bobbing under the dukeâs grip. He nods, but the dukeâs doesnât relent. He lowers his eyes.
âYes, Your Grace.â
A smile spreads on the dukeâs face, wicked and slow. He lets go of the kingâs throat, fingers trailing down. He leans back slightly.
âGood boy, I knew youâd see reason.â He lets go, straightening his collar and smoothing out any wrinkles with meticulousness.
âRemember, love, your happiness, your safety â your very existence depends on pleasing me.â His tone is gentle, almost sweet. âI can be very generous to those who obey, darling. Youâve seen it.â
He pulls the king up, pushing him back on the settee and not paying him any more attention as he tries to quickly straighten his clothes. The carriage slows down as they approach the gate and a smile is back on the dukeâs face. âLetâs put on a good show, hmm? Smile for your adoring subjects.â
He doesnât grant the king any time, quickly opening the door. The king pushes himself up and almost scrambles â but not because that would be stupid â forward to smile and wave and pretend.
The duke steps out behind the king, leaning close. âSuch a good king, arenât you? So well-trained, so obedient.â His hand finds the small of the kingâs back in a gesture that appears supportive. It burns like a brand but neither of their smile waver.
He raises a hand to acknowledge the crowdâs adoration, smile just shy of seductive. âPlease, Your Majesty. We have much to discuss in private.â
He bows slightly, letting the king leads them â though he stiffens with every step. The mask falls as soon as theyâre behind closed doors, and the duke stalks forward.
âAlone at last,â he almost purrs, matching the kingâs retreat step for step. âNow then, my disobedient little pet,â he grips the kingâs wrist tightly, pulling him flush against his chest. âLetâs discuss your transgressions properly, shall we?â

If you're angry at someone on tumblr, please read this. The reblog format of tumblr happens to be really good at making us angry at each other, but the real enemies are out there.
(I'm not saying this article is great or something I fully agree with. But damn, it sure is food for thought)
"
What happens is â someone makes a statement which is controversial by Tumblr standards, like âProtect Doctor Who fans from kitten pic sharers at all costs.â A kitten pic sharer sees the statement, sees red, and reblogs it to her followers with a series of invectives against Doctor Who fans. Since kitten pic sharers cluster together in the social network, soon every kitten pic sharer has seen the insult against kitten pic sharer â as they all feel the need to add their defensive commentary to it, soon all of them are seeing it from ten different directions. The angry invectives get back to the Doctor Who fans, and now they feel deeply offended, so they reblog it among themselves with even more condemnations of the kitten pic sharers, who now not only did whatever inspired the enmity in the first place, but have inspired extra hostility because their hateful invectives are right there on the post for everyone to see. So about half the stuff on your dashboard is something you actually want to see, and the other half is towers of alternate insults....

And then you sigh and scroll down to the next one. Unless of course you are a Doctor Who fan, in which case you sigh and then immediately reblog with the comment âItâs obvious you guys started ganging up against us first, donât try to accuse **US** nowâ because you canât just let that accusation stand.
I make fun of Tumblr social justice sometimes, but the problem isnât with Tumblr social justice, itâs structural. Every community on Tumblr somehow gets enmeshed with the people most devoted to making that community miserable. The tiny Tumblr rationalist community somehow attracts, concentrates, and constantly reblogs stuff from the even tinier Tumblr community of people who hate rationalists and want them to be miserable (no, well-intentioned and intelligent critics, I am not talking about you). Itâs like one of those rainforest ecosystems where every variety of rare endangered nocturnal spider hosts a parasite who has evolved for millions of years solely to parasitize that one spider species, and the parasites host parasites who have evolved for millions of years solely to parasitize them. If Tumblr social justice is worse than anything else, itâs mostly because everyone has a race and a gender so itâs easier to fire broad cannonades and just hit everybody.
I see so many good whump posts but god. Whump is such an unsexy word to me. So when they say whumpee I just canât. I canât do it. Please. Please. Just say âvictimâ in the sexy ones. For me. You can keep saying whumpee in the boring ones it adds flavor. But the sexy ones. Pleag
In modern linguistics, "descriptivism" is describing the way that a person or group of people uses language. It's considered the "correct way" to talk about culture and language in general because it simply describes how language *is*, while making specific effort to not pass judgement on it. We do this in order to keep open minds about cultures that are different from our own-- especially ones that we wouldn't even consider cultures-- so we don't accidentally close off our minds to the thought that anything except our own experience is wrong.
Ex: "These people use the word 'whumpee' in place of the word 'victim.'"
"The southern american dialect generally uses the word "y'all" as a second person plural pronoun."
"There's a person over there who has a pen, you can ask him for one if you need it."
Prescriptivism is the opposite. Prescriptivism is using specific language to pass judgement, or literally "prescribe" how those people should talk. This can be very bad, as it is often based on your own direct and biased personal experience. No one is exempt from this bias, no matter how hard they try. That's why we go for descriptivism instead.
Ex: "Can y'all stop using the word whumpee, it sounds so weird, just use the word I'm more used to, "victim," instead"
"Y'all is the best second-person plural pronoun."
"That guy over there always has so many pens, I bet he wouldn't care if you asked him for one."
Prescriptivism can be bad because it sets up an expectation or opinion in the recipient of the information, instead of letting them form an opinion on their own based on information that they see in front of them. I'm sure you can figure out at this point why that is bad, but basically it means that you're forming opinions on something based on someone else's emotions on the matter instead of actually exploring your own feelings on it.
Which straight up means you're more susceptible to propaganda. No, really. Propaganda is quite literally, at its core, a specific use of prescriptivism that the recipient is supposed to mistake as descriptive fact.
If you think this is stupid and pedantic, then you're the exact type of person that this is aimed at, because this sort of shit literally targets people who scoff at it. People should always be aware of their own biases when talking about things that they don't understand and think should change, especially when it's about languages and cultures that are not your own and ESPECIALLY when you think it's small stupid shit like this. Because you're showing that you have:
1) no respect for the Whump community
2) probably no knowledge that it IS its own community
3) the ins and outs of why we use that word (partially to distance ourselves from kink, as they CAN be the same but they can also be completely different)
4) made some weird sort of assumption that we're making our posts only for kink,
5) or for you who does NOT respect our community,
6) or that it's somehow our goal to get our whump posts outside the community and you're somehow helping us by telling us how to do it better???
7) that our "boring ones" are lesser than just because you don't personally like them, and by proxy that we are lesser than for enjoying them (Literally imagine saying that about ANYTHING in any real life culture).
There's even more but just. Yeesh.
Basically what I'm saying is either suck it up or get the hell out of my house and stop insulting me as an academic as well as my community. Posts like these are the exact reason why people think that kink is abuse, that having a southern accent means you're stupid while a british accent is smart and distinguished, that there's only one "correct" way to write a novel, that animation is "only for kids," etc etc etc.
Yes, this EXACT "ugh its just so unsexy" mindset.

. . . . . . . .
Here's a written college lecture crash course that goes into much more detail on the "why" and with some wonderful sources to back up:
As someone who is a former linguistics major and in the whump community, I get your point. But for the record saying "you shouldn't be prescriptivist!" is also prescriptivist.
Prescriptivism does have a place in this world---it is why we respect people's pronouns, why we have a consistent system of writing, why nearly-extinct languages can be brought back from the dead. We are subconsciously correcting ourselves and others all the time; this is how language works.
What does NOT have a place in this world is statements about the value of people who use certain kinds of language. eg "people who speak AAVE are stupid and uneducated". This hurts people, especially when it is a universal bias in a society and the basis for oppression.
There is a spectrum, I think. Here's an example.
Opinion: "I do not like the word 'moist'"
Preference: "Please do not use the word 'moist' around me, it gives me the ick" (this is what misscaptor expressed, I think)
Prescriptivism: "No one should use the word 'moist' because it's gross"
Censorship: "Children should never hear the word 'moist', so we must ban every work that uses it."
Bigotry: "People who use the word 'moist' are stupid, uneducated, immoral, unhireable, etc."
Do you see the difference?
My dear fellow linguist, the world has much much bigger problems than a kink blog saying they don't like the word "whumpee". I have asexual friends who are addicted to hurt/comfort without the comfort, and they also dislike the word "whump" even though they could easily be considered part of the community. It is an aesthetic judgment, not an attack on the whump community.
I hope this makes sense. I am happy to talk about this further in a separate thread---I would be writing my thesis on this if I hadn't changed my major, so I have many thoughts lol. I hope you have a lovely day :)
In some circles, Declan was known as the Harbinger of Disease or, familiarly, Pestilence. Supposedly healthy, well adjusted friend groups would welcome him in, only for diagnoses to befall them one by one.
It wasnât Declanâs fault, per se. He wasnât quite old enough to understand when worried parents sat him down in a tastefully colorful office once a week for âarts and craftsâ with Ms. Kaminski. Heâd caught on by the time he tried talk therapy and CBT, finally taught the vocabulary that came along with his conditions.Â
So was it ever such a coincidence that he recognized familiar behavior in others by the time high school rolled around?Â
He wore the title with pride, though. Before he was BurnaLive he was PestilencePlays, and the name still dredged up good memories. Pestilence brought people closer, in a way, when trauma-dumping finally died down into relatable complaints and comparisons. Finally, there were people other than his therapist who didnât find it gross that he slept in his clothes and understood when he threw up all over his algebra final. And Declan didnât care that they might leave him on read for fear of being a bother, or neglect to brush their teeth for a few weeks at a time.
Respect, however, never prevented a friendly debate.Â
âYou donât shower when youâre depressed?!â Declanâs voice had been squeakier back then and it flew across the table with sandwich crumbs in tow. âSorry.â
âUh, no? You think I have the energy for that?â
âThe showerâs the only thing that makes it better!â he insisted. âComplete privacy, lights off, and you forget that life is supposed to be anything else. Plus, you can cry and people donât come knocking!â
âYou clearly never learned how to cry into a pillow.â
âFor the last time, Sage, pillows are not breathable!â
Declan shuddered, snapping out of the memory. How long would it be until he gained the experience of being smothered with a pillow, too?
Water beat against his back in a warm thrum. He was supposed to be cleaning himself.Â
âOh?âÂ
Hasan had already tied him up the previous day when they noticed the bloody handprint on his thigh. He was surprised they hadnât checked sooner, really.
âNow, we both know I havenât broken skin for a few days, Dec. In fact, it was only last week that I did anything dramatic enough to facilitate thisâŚâ A hand swiped across bandaged ribs, the cuts no longer raw enough to sting. âDo I need to start worrying? Confiscating?â
âYou really think Iâd-â
âA papercut couldâve re-opened those on the second day. A fingernail, even.â
Declan squeezed his eyes shut. The handprint was still there because, after cleaning up the puddle of blood, it was finally a mark heâd left. That was it.Â
âI hate it when you do this.â
âYou know that this is unacceptable, no matter when it happened. You should have showered since last week.â
âYou know why I donât fucking shower!â And that was the line. Hasan slipped that dayâs knife out of their pocket and it wasnât the butterfly. The curved blade of the karambit flipped out instead.Â
His gasp stuttered. It dug into his side, under his armpit, before splitting the bandage and playing his ribs like a gĂźiro.Â
âHaah, ghh!â Declan folded forward for protection but the deed was already done. The new cut slashed through the four heâd nearly healed and, though it stopped before his hips, he already knew heâd be scrubbing the floor.
âI expect you to be clean by the time Iâm home tomorrow.â They wiped the knife clean on his cheek and leaned in close. âAnything else I should know while weâre sharing secrets, darling?â
The water went lukewarm for the third time. The handle was already cranked to the max so Declan let it run colder and colder, waiting for the misery to shock his system into action. Old habits died hard, it seemed. Depression showers had never been for washing himself.Â
Thatâs where Hasan found him hours later, still waiting for relief to come.
