Dick faltered a little at the sight of such twisting scars on such a young kid. Lines stretched across his back. Old stab wounds everywhere, and some looked dangerously close to arteries, if not having had hit them. Nobody should have to go through the things you had to to get these scars, much less a kid.

…he felt a bit like a hypocrite.

Crouching down in front of Damian, Dick carefully rested a hand on his arm. “I’m so sorry. You shouldn’t have had to have gone through all of this,” he lightly gestured to the scars. “You’re just a kid.” His voice wobbled a bit at the end.

Damian objected weakly, keeping his wet gaze lowered for fear the other boy might see him tearing up.

Dick’s expression softened, and he gently rubbed his thumb on Damian’s arm, hopefully providing some comfort.

“I know. But… you shouldn’t have had to be,” he said gently.

He shrugs his arm out of Dick’s hold, trying to put up his walls again as he wipes at his eyes with the heel of his hand.

Dick let Damian pull away, but he stayed crouched down, looking up at him. He tilted his head and gave Damian a gentle smile.

“Looks like you’ve been really strong, kiddo,” he said softly, leaving the air open for Damian to choose to say or do what he wanted.

He says, building his tough demeanor back up.

“I know, but… You don’t have to be anymore. Nobody can be strong forever,” Dick leaned back on his heels. “Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is to let yourself be a little weak.”
