From the ashes

Seven episodes is too short to accomplish all the things Rolin Jones wanted this season to accomplish well. The entire season felt rushed and the season finale felt less like a suspenseful cliffhanger and more like the ending of a penultimate episode.

There are certain characters that deserved more screen time (notably Nicolas) and others that deserved a lot less (Gabriella). I was fine with the sudden tonal shift from Louis to Lestat because that it how it was in the novels.

Sam Reid did a phenomenal job delivering rock star Lestat as well as navigating the complicated emotions of a 250-year-old vampire with serious psychological issues.

As far as how the character of Louis was treated this season, part of the disrespect I expected because that is exactly how Anne Rice treated Louis after Interview. Louis is kind of a morose killjoy in the later novels, which is why Anne kept pairing Lestat with multiple "companions" before finally deciding it should have been Louis all along.

All that being said, the decline in the quality of the script definitely showed this season and there were several tone-deaf lines that rubbed me the wrong way; such as Claudia calling Mr. 3b multi-generationally wealthy Louis de Pointe du Lac a "nappy headed slave" was wild.

I also felt like the writers dumbed down Daniel's character. People will say that it is because that is how Lestat sees Daniel, which is partially true, but I also think the writers do not know what to do with Daniel.

I do hope we get that Devil's Island limited series in between seasons to better flesh out Daniel and Armand's relationship because I just do not see the chemistry that Devil's Minions fans are pining for despite how game and talented the two actors are.
