I decided to post this here in case anyone else is interested in the topic, but to your knowledge, has there ever been situation in which a “beard” was paid by a celebrity’s team to keep them closeted? I can accept that bearding is a thing, insomuch as a celebrity themselves may wish to portray that image, though many times, individuals are inaccurately referred to as beards (I.e., the classic erasure of Freddie mercury’s bisexuality by referring to Mary Austin as his beard). Other times, a celebrity is actually still questioning when they were seen with someone, and that is later inaccurately referred to as a bearding circumstance (I.e., Lance Bass/Danielle Fishel). So I guess I’m wondering if there has ever been a circumstance in which a celebrity’s sexuality has been deliberately protected by their team for the sake of their image?

I’ve never heard of any account of a woman being paid to be a beard, no. Normally her “payment” is she’s a friend of this man’s and is just happy to do it, or that they both get mutual promo from it if it’s a high profile relationship. I’ve also never heard of any accounts of a management team systematically forcibly closeting their artists. The accounts I’ve heard from out artists have been that they had been strongly encouraged to remain closeted for the benefit of their career and they consented because they were afraid of the ramifications too, but not that they were forced or enslaved into it, no.

I’ve worked in the entertainment industry (film/TV and theatre) for about 15 years, mainly in London, a tiny bit in the USA. Closeting and bearding still exists unfortunately. Not much in the UK, but it’s not uncommon if you want to work in the US. I know two openly gay actors who became closeted when they moved to LA (one is now out again, the other is still closeted and playing the pronoun game whilst lite-bearding, ie being seen with a woman and allowing press to name her as his girlfriend while not confirming anything personally). And one older actor who is ridiculously blatant about shagging or trying to shag everything with a dick yet is not officially out to the media/public. Oh and one actor who’s super cagey about his personal life to the point people speculate he’s gay but he actually just cheats on his girlfriend a lot. I personally was told it was fine to come out as bi but not as a lesbian. I also inadvertently nearly bearded for a boybander in the early 2000s (who later came out as gay).

So, I have experience. But no, no one can be “forced.” Pressured yes, but there is simply no legal way to force anyone. A contract explicitly saying you have to closet or fake a relationship or whatever would be illegal and they simply do not exist, that’s completely laughable to basically anyone with any experience of industry contracts. (Again all my knowledge is from film/TV but I can’t imagine music industry is vastly different.) And pressure tactics only really work with aspiring actors. Once you reach a certain level of success, if you’re closeted it’s because you want to be. IME beards are usually unwritten quid pro quo but I don’t know so much about that.

i have nothing against louis but his voice is very weak compared to every one else in the band so why is he your favorite voice? (not trying to be rude but it is)

I feel like I’ve answered this before but for the last time, Louis’ voice is fucking crucial to their sound as a singing group. His voice might not be able to compete with Liam’s lower register or Zayn’s high notes or Harry’s nuance but it so fucking unique. His voice is absolutely pivotal to their overall sound, their harmonies would sound broken and empty without him. The real question is, how can Louis’ voice not be your favourite?
