âYou never want to sound ungrateful â or feel it even,â he says. âBeing in the spotlight, that was hard, especially for the first year or 18 months â it was like a runaway train. Until I found my place in the group, I found it really difficult. Because when Iâd go back home and talk to friends, I couldnât take enough ownership of what I was doing. That started from being on The X Factor and not singing a lot, if I was singing at all. And taking negative comments about that was tough. We were all really young, and it was a really emotionally challenging time, which is why we were so lucky to have each otherâ

âI miss the band every day â Iâd be lying if I said I didnât. Of course I do,â he says. âIt was an amazing time, so when you donât have that same rhythm, you feel it. But thatâs what drives me. It gives me something to aim for again.â

Louis at BBC Radio 1. Two Of Us release day.
BBC Radio 1 have, at this point, been on air in a marathon Comic Relief donation drive, and it is at the tail end of this effort, at the appointed hour of 1pm, that Louis is introduced, with his new song. *As there are multiply hosts (Scott Mills and Chris Stark) am using BBC as a general term.
Transcript:
Louis: Hello maaaateâŚ.  Â
BBC:Â Hello?
Louis:Â Apparently Iâm your pop emergency, so I want to say thank you for that.
BBC:Â Iâm too tired for this
Louis:Â You do sound like youâre slurring a bit, you do sound tired.Â
BBC:Â Itâs Louis Tomlinson everyone..
Louis: How are you mate? How are you, nice to see youâŚ
BBC: Itâs been a whileâŚI donât get this - so youâre like a live pop emergency, thenâŚ.
Louis. Yeah, thatâsâŚ
BBC:Â Your new track - I knew that we were playing it, but I didnât know that you were going to be here.
Louis:Â Yeah, yeah, well here I am, here I am. Howâs it been going?
BBC: YeahâŚ.Iâve not seen you since you were in that bandâŚ
Louis:Â Yeah, yeah (everyone laughs)
BBC:Â Right, shall we play it then?
Louis:Â Oh, yeah, please, yeah. My new song. Yeah, thatâs actually what Iâm here to do, yeah, yeah.
BBC: Tell me, what is itâŚI canât speak anymore, Louis
Louis:Â Um, itâs me new single. Itâs called Two Of Us. Maybe Iâll talk about it after.
BBC:Â Ok, cool.
Two Of Us plays
BBC:Â Louis, I might be too fragile to cope with this.
Louis:Â (laughing) Thatâs the first play right there, thanks for that, thank you.
BBC: Ah, just listening to the words and getting all a bit like ahhhh. What other people are saying, Alison in Preston message âTrying not to cry in the middle of a busy cafe listening to this. Well done Louis. Well done Scott and Chris, amazing radio as always, Cheers, Alisonâ
Louis:Â Ah, thatâs nice, thatâs nice.
BBC: Yeah, so tell us about the song. What itâs aboutâŚ
Louis: SoâŚ.umâŚ.some people may or may not know, I lost me mum, ah, a couple of years ago, and I wanted toâŚ..when I released me first single on me own with Steve Aoki, called Just Hold On, it kind of had a similar sentiment in the lyric, and Iâd never really had this before, in music, where I got, like, feedback on line, socially, from people who arenât like your stereotypical fans, and saying that the lyrics really helped them. Iâd never really been in a position with music like that before, yâknow, I wasnât as emotionally invested in One Direction, obviously, in something as heavy as thatâŚ
BBC: No, no, this is a much more personal thingâŚ
Louis: Mmmm, and I thinkâŚ.
BBC: I mean, they had some bangersâŚ.
Louis: Yeah, well, they had big time, big timeâŚ
BBC: âŚbut I know what you meanâŚ
Louis: Um, yeah, and I think, um, the feeling of grief is obviously pretty universal, so I kind of wanted to make something - yeah, itâs a little bit sad at the top - but hopefully, people feel the hopefulness in it, yâknow what I meanâŚ
BBC: Yeah. I think itâs empoweringâŚ
Louis:Â Thank you, thank you. Thatâs what Iâm hoping for, definitely.
BBC:Â We are getting loads of messages:Â âLouis new song has given me actual chills. Sobbing a little bit, not gonna lie. His mum would be chuffedâ Do you feel emotional hearing that, out now?
Louis: That was, that was, because thatâs, like, confirmation, yâknow what I mean, the first play, listening to it back here in the room. Um, but actually, Iâm at a place in my head, and how Iâm dealing with a lot of stuffâŚlike, when Iâve been rehearsing it, when Iâve been singing it - Iâll do a live performance of it tonight - I feel reallyâŚ.it feels like an accomplishmentâŚlike Iâve got through this stage of âwow, was that grief, reallyâ âŚthe words empower me, really. Itâs not like I stand on stage, and I kind of drift off and get sad. Itâs the opposite, it actually really motivates me.
BBC: I think itâs amazing todayâŚ.today has been a very special day, obviously, raising money and that, with what weâre doing, but with what Greg was saying earlier, at some point today, Scott, weâve all had a moment to just be honest, and have an honest discussion, and itâs actually amazing hearing yourself doing something very similar to what weâve been actually trying to do today, so thank you for that.
Louis: Of course, yeah, I think itâs, yâknow, I think itâs important that people have the confidence to talk about these thingsâŚ.
BBC: Louise has been honest, she lost her mum when she was fourteen, so she can really relate. Actually, um, in a kind of odd way, it ties up, because we were saying earlier that grief counselling is something you can actually support by donating to Comic Relief as wellâŚ.
Louis: Right, mmm hmm, mmm hmmâŚ.
BBC: âŚbecause, when you think about it, like, thereâs such a strain on these services because thereâs a lot of people that need itâŚ.
Louis: âŚof course, of courseâŚ.
BBC:Â so, um, whatever you can give, um, please - sorry I canât talk - please, for five pounds, text the word lol to 70205. Thereâs so many messages coming in. Shall we play it again?
Louis:Â Yeah, yeah, letâs have it again.
BBC:Â One more time! Itâs Louis Tomlinson, Two Of Us.
Two Of Us plays again
BBC:Â Oh, so youâve set Beth off, in the library, in Derby.
Louis:Â Sorry Beth, love.
BBC:Â (imitating Louis) Sorry Beth, love (everyone laughs). Emilyâs had to pull over. Um, but sheâs, like, âwhat a lovely man Louis is, and Scottâs tired voice is just adorable. I listen to Radio 1 every day and I feel like we are all a supportive family together. I feel so proud to be part of this. Iâve donated, and I think you should all be really proud of yourselvesâ Thank you. Um, I loved your mum. Should we all talk about [?] festival?
Louis: Yeah, she loved you, lad, she loved you, yeah, yeah. You had a little drink together, I think, did you?
BBC: Yeah, several, several, yeahâŚI think we were watching Rudimental, yeah, and it happenedâŚ.
Louis:Â (in the softest voice) Yeah, that was nice, man, that was nice.
BBC: So, Louis, that was Two Of Us, and Iâd like to say, itâs been a while since youâve had anything outâŚ
Louis:Â mmm
BBC: ...so it must feelâŚ.it must feel great to get it back on the radio, yâknowâŚ
Louis: Yeah, I was kind of just taking it in, really. Iâve beenâŚIâve been working towards this moment for what feels like an eternity now, um, so itâs just great to have it out there, and obviously hearing the feedback from what wonderful people is ace as well.Â
BBC:Â Are you right to stay around for a bit longer?
Louis:Â Yeah, man, yeah, Iâm here for a bit.
BBC: Is that alright? I expectâŚI always expect someone to whisk you away, likeâŚ
Louis: No, Iâm hereâŚ
BBC: âŚlike, some kind ofâŚâheâs going now, good byeââŚbut it looks like weâre fineâŚare we fine?
Louis:Â Yeah, weâre fine. Iâm the boss (laughs)
BBC:Â Well, you are, you are, essentially the boss, but Iâm looking at the man who might whisk you away, and heâs giving me the thumbs up, so itâs ok.
End of the main part (they go on to do some general banter after this)
i follow some hets on insta who are like 'omg louis' friend calvin is so hot' and i feel sorry for them lol
calvin looks like he drinks juul juice bye
âThe simplicity of this song, and the lyric, is for me what makes it beautiful, so I didnât want to complicate that too much with too many modern sounds or anything. I kind of kept it, pretty real and honest.â

âI mean weâve all got our own musical influences, but I will say you know I think, I mean I know that everyone says this but I do think my fanbase in particular are just, theyâre so dedicated, so loyal, so patient as well because itâs been a while I have to say for this music, so I think you guys do a new level of dedication definitely.â
â Louis to HitsRadio on who influences him the way he influences fans
I listened to it and havenât even been able to again, the lyrics alone make me cry.
