Genuinely surprised that in all of phm nobody once suggested blowing up Venus
Sorry I'm still thinking abt this cos like. Ok. Hear me out.
- Problem: astrophage eating the sun
- Required conditions for astrophage:
Sun
Planet with mostly carbon dioxide atmosphere (Venus)
- Desired outcome: removal of astrophage. Can be achieved by removing either of the required conditions.
Option 1: remove the sun -> we die we die all earth plural dead etc
Option 2: remove Venus -> ???
I don't even know if it'd be possible to build a big enough bomb to blow up a whole planet, or at least get rid of the carbon dioxide atmosphere..... And if you could, what effects that would have on the rest of the solar system......... But I'm just saying SOMEONE should've thrown that out there during a late night brainstorming session
There's certainly a debate in there. The thing is, without Venus, the orbital harmony of the solar system would be thrown off - except it would likely take an unbelievable amount of (human) time. Orbits have a massive impact on a planet's climate; even slight variation could cause unpredictable consequences for the local life. Weather could turn into potentially unsurvivable extremes...
... millions of years into the future. Possibly hundreds of thousands. You might have to factor in how suddenly and violently Venus is removed - I'd imagine blowing it up could have disastrous consequences regarding space debris, but I digress.
Was it considered? Did Stratt argue that saving people here and now, and their children and grandchildren and a handful more generations, was worth the future extinction level event that they wouldn't live to see? Would people argue that it would at least buy them time, and they could figure out the next steps later? Did they test apocalyptic scenarios, observe animals in weather extremes, and consider building bunkers? Did scientists try to create equations to predict the longevity of the human race, to try and prove we'd be extinct before it became a problem anyway?
Did Stratt secretly breathe a sigh of relief upon the development of Project Hail Mary, knowing she could carry the weight of condemning three lives for the sake of the world, but not the weight of all future life on Earth? Or did she secretly think, as she watched Grace sob and claw at the earth, that 'Plan V' would have been kinder?
third option : they had to get the hail mary up there ASAP and also the book is from Grace's POV so thats all we know about. Venus did in fact get blown up and thats why Stratt went to jail.
Elmer it’s Thursday, I think you’ve made a mistake

Hey everyone. There's a new youtube feature that rolled out just yesterday that's raising some privacy concerns.
People in the U.S., U.K., Brazil, and Singapore can now share videos and chat with friends directly within the YouTube app. The update bring
This post talks about a new DM feature in youtube. What it fails to mention is that as part of this new feature is that when you send someone a link to a video, and they open it in the youtube app, they will see who sent them the link. Specifically, your channel name.
If your google account name is your real name, so is your channel name by default.
This means the new default behavior is that everyone you send a youtube link to will see your full name if they open it in the mobile app.
To turn this off:
Go to your youtube app settings
Go to Privacy
Turn off "Channel visibility for shared links"
Trimming the source id (the stuff after the '?' in links) will also prevent this from happening.

dishonored really has the sexiest aesthetic ever. there’s assassins. there’s witches. there’s whales. there’s steampunk tech and shit. a beating heart that tells you peoples darkest secrets. a spooky-looking twink that won’t let you sleep. swarms of rats. it’s just undeniably sexy.
remember to bury the dead with a phone, everyone. these days the ferry terminal at the river styx wants you to download a fucking app
The really unfortunate thing about mental health progress is that sometimes you realize you've made it in the form of "wow, I haven't felt this bad in a fucking while"
On the one hand it's a bit of a pick me up in a dark place to know that this will pass because it has passed before on the other hand sometimes it isn't entirely a pleasant thought to go "wow, I used to feel like this all the time. That was pretty fucking bad. It's pretty bad right now too also."
Someday your current baseline will be the sort of thing you consider A Really Bad Day. It does get better.
one day it'll happen to you. you will stay up a bit too late playing a video game and not get to bed on time. I've done it before, you'll think. I'll be fine. but no. you will make it through most of the next day and then at about 2pm you will feel like a reanimated corpse whose sim meters are all completely fucked and nothing hurts exactly but everything does feel very bad. and you'll think oh yeah. I'm not twenty anymore
autism tests are so funny. I'm extremely literal most of the time, but people don't tell me that generally, so I'm inclined to answer disagree. because I'm taking the statement too literally
^not my post but same sentiment

Special shoutout to all the queer, intersex, and trans het folks. Sorry for all the “it’s illegal to be straight this month” jokes you’ll have to endure. Y’all are still very much part of the community.

A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previou
Let’s fucking go
This is HUGE.
1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.
2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.
3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."
4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.
5. If the words are Google's, this solidifies the position of universities who demand that all answers from AI are fully cited. If all the in-line citations now have to be (Google, 2026), that's going to make it obvious when someone's trying to use Google as a source. There's still the difficulty with people who are academically dishonest by trying to pass off the AI writing as their own. 6. 91% accuracy is officially too low to use as a source of references, which means the AI can't be used as a source of references either. This makes it less legitimate for such purposes than Wikipedia of all places (Wikipedia might need date/time proof of when it was accessed for the reference to be valid, but at least it is possible to prove the link existed at a particular date and time). 7. This will help encourage the rollout of courses on how to avoid AI search for students who need academic accuracy, because it's statistically not good enough to use. 8. This strengthens the case intellectual property authors have against Google in the EU, as this is proof that an intellectual property transfer took place.
