She's fat and she's funny and she has character depth and growth.

She's fat and the main character and no one mentions her weight once.

And then everyone in the comments feels genuinely called out. Am I- Am I crazy?! Yeah, you're drawn to media that you relate to emotionally. Is this a groundbreaking observation for people?

I don't wanna hate. You know? But it is starting to make me realize how closely linked media literacy and self-awareness is.

You're just explaining word for word what the trope is and then being like "you like it because you relate to it!" Right?!

Sort of unrelated but it makes me think of the people who genuinely can't tell the difference between a well written character and a not well written character.

Like, they'll see no issue with a character who is written completely without flaws. 'Cause I feel like you have to be aware of your own shortcomings in order to appreciate a character that also messes up.

"I have no idea why that character would do that!"

or write about! whatever floats your boat

"you're going to have to try a little harder than that" (or "to impress me," but avoid making it sound overly cocky)

^a(n unironic) wink in this situation. or an eyebrow raise, lick or bite of lips, or head tilt. there's something in the subtlety of it - like "this is between us"

feeling the other's breath/lips ghosting their neck

any sort of whisper. anywhere. goddamn.

a long pause when someone is speaking, as though they lost their train of thought while looking at the other person

their bodies accidentally pressed together - being stuck in a small space, falling onto one another, or having to sit really close together. the pause when it's realized.

sharing earbuds - forced proximity, the vulnerability in sharing things that matter to them

eyes tracing over their features while they're turned away, catching on their eyelashes fluttering against their skin, the slope of their nose, the curve of their lips.

hands brushing, fingertips twitching, savoring the sparks that ignite from touching them, and resisting the urge to chase after it.

hanging onto their every word, engraving the sentences they speak into their very bones.

bodies in close proximity, focusing on how electric the air is, and being hyperaware of how their heat is searing itself into their skin.

idealizing them, imagining them in their fantasies, thinking repeatedly about their best qualities.

having them constantly on their mind, finding reminders of them in the most mundane of daily activities.

a tightness in their chest, an ache in their body at the thought of what they don't have.

leaning in to gaze at them better, taking note of every little detail, every new addition to their appearance, and staring like they'll slip through their fingers if they ever look away.

staying silent when the topic is brought up, too fearful to broach it in case of rejection, or maybe just unwilling to fully commit, and merely returning to their longing afterward.

overthinking what they say, what they do, desperate for the other's attention, just to have their eyes on them.

Character A is an incorrigible arrogant asshole who gets by on charm and the skin of their teeth. 

Character B is an academic beast who is barely surviving the semester on their scholarship and is carrying parental pressure to succeed no matter what.

being paired up for a project/assignment/task that is said to count for a majority of their grade

“unlike most things in life, you are gonna have to put in the work”, "dont worry, I splurged for premuim on Canva"

dividing up the amount of work to see as little as possible of each other 

hint hint the double entendre

the amount of irk that B gets they gets when A ends up charming their way to good grade 

“how do you manage to always get away unscathed” “how do always manage to sound like a character from Lord of the Rings?”

the looks from B’s roommate who swore they heard that hell would have to freeze over for them to be even in the same vicinity as A

 cue the bets that get placed 

“how did you get the correct answer, you used the completely wrong method”, “much like how I wonder why anyone finds you remotely likable, this will have to be filed under one of life's little mysteries” 

B suddenly saving a seat beside them for A at every event/class/meeting

“stop looking at me like that”, “sorry, I’ve been told I have resting yearning face” 

all nonchalantness leaves their body the moment they get hit with the soft toned ‘sweetheart’, ‘love’, ‘baby’.
