Or: A step-by-step guide to creating a homestuck fantroll/kid
Hey, this is Vriska! Or ceiling-vriska, the new mod. I have yet to see a guide to creating fantrolls that I really like, and since we're not strictly trollmegle anymore, so I've made this one for you. Read more break because this is waaaaaaaay too long. Click to continue ======>
Fantrolls can be rather frowned upon among the fandom, for one simple reason: a lot of them are bad. Not all! But there is quite a number of fantrolls that are mary-sues, canon-defiers, or maybe even need just a little touching up. This guide should cover the basics of staying close to canon, while still creating an interesting character to roleplay.
Yes, it's true; symbols in homestuck are common between both trolls and kids. However, while it's stated that troll society automatically places symbols on troll kids, we know that obviously humans are not born with special symbols. It's really up to you, then, if you happen to be making a fankid. I would recommend doing it.
It's a good idea to choose the symbol on your fantrolls first, since trolls are usually almost completely based upon their symbols; in design, quirk, personality, ect. The symbol's like a signature to them. If you see a symbol that means something and you go "Hey, I could make a troll out of that!" USE IT!
Not all trolls NEED to have zodiac/constellation/astrological signs, by the way! And they are especially not limited to the twelve presented; in fact, I would avoid using the western zodiac signs, as sharing a symbol in troll society usually means the two trolls are very, very similar, ancestrally so.
We all know that all humans have the same blood color, so if you're making a human, you can skip this step. This also isn't necessarily something you need to choose right off the bat, but I like to choose this right after my symbol, since a lot about trolls revolves around the color of their blood.
It's been stated by Hussie that all twelve blood colors are represented in canon EXCEPT limebloods, who are between Sollux and Nepeta, and what Karkat would have been if he weren't a mutant. Some people adhere to this rule, some don't. Some fantrolls will have blood colors that are grandfathered in, but generally I like to stick to the canon twelve colors.
Some things to remember; while lowbloods are more likely to be psychic, and by that generally more susceptible to psychics, highbloods are going to be more physically powerful and also generally less stable. Olive to teal seems to be sort of a happy medium between these two things, and it's possible that Seadwellers are slightly more stable than Indigo-blooded landdwellers, though the only example of this we've seen is Feferi, and she's sort of special.
Pick because of symbol, or use your blood color to decide some parts of the personality. Or just use your favorite color! That's a valid reason to select a color too, really! Nothing wrong with just picking your favorite.
This is a big step. Hold onto your socks, kiddos, I know you want to start doing appearances now, but it's a lot easier to decide your fantroll's appearance after you know their interests and concept a little better. Designs will fit more if you already have a basis too. It's not necessarily IMPERATIVE to do this in this order, but it's always been helpful for me.
Gender first. It's always a good place to start. Gender matters more for humans than for trolls. After all, trolls have no gender differentiation, aside from some appearance things. Humans however will probably need interests suited more to their gender. It's not that you can't break the gender roles, but it's a nice thing to know when thinking up interests for a human.
Interests next. Interests are important because they are featured in INTRODUCTION PAGES. You know those big CAPITALIZED LETTERS? Those are the variety of INTERESTS. Think of the symbol first: Are there any interests that could relate to this particular symbol? Think of Terezi; her love of law and justice corresponds to her sign of Libra, The Scales of justice.
Be creative, work with your theme! There was nothing ever wrong with making a troll's interests weird and out-there. They're aliens, they're weird and out-there from the getgo!
As for fankids, I'd suggest you look at the kinds of things actual people like. Maybe they're an anime fan? Which ones? (While this is OK for fankids, it's not okay to make anime fan trolls because trolls don't have anime, because they don't have japan.) What movies do they like? What websites do they go on? Sports? It's just like making any other human character; but more homestuck. There's nothing wrong with making their interests a little odd either! Just look at Dave. He runs a makeshift darkroom and keeps dead things in jars. Rose psychoanalyzes people for fun and has an affinity for lovecraftian monsters. They're people and people like things.
Along with interests is personality. I'm putting these two things in the same section because they're really intertwined with one another. Once again you want to look at the symbol, especially with things like zodiac signs or enneagram numbers or things that relate to personality typing. If you aren't using a zodiac symbol, think about what your symbol means. Mars, the red planet, is named after the roman god of war. Maybe they're violent, or love conflict? You get the idea?
Now I do say "Look at your symbol" a lot but it's totally okay to deviate from that. Gamzee's clown thing has absolutely no basis in capricorn that I can see, and Terezi likes dragons which have nothing to do with Libra. It's just a good idea to have at least some tie-in to the symbol, or you might as well not have the symbol in the first place.
What?! We can't look at appearances yet? But these are just little things like your fantroll/kid's Lusus/guardian and hive/house! What if we just don't talk about our lusus/hive? Can't we start roleplaying or drawing now?
The thing is, these little details can make roleplaying/writing the character a lot more fun! Fancharacters could complain about their lusus/parent's wacky antics or how cold it was because they're hive is located in the middle of Alternia's icecap or little details like that that make your character sound a whole lot more thought out.
Lusii are largely based off symbols, but you can get creative! Tie your lusus in to your interests. Maybe youre troll is a hunter? Maybe that means their carnivore lusus is fat and lazy, because they spoil it rotten. Things like that are nice details.
Guardians, for kids, are essentially parents. Who were they raised by? What was that person like? How did they influence them?
Hive locations are the next thing to think about. Obviously, Seadwellers will live in the sea or on islands, but it's been shown that -GENERALLY- the higher the blood, the closer to the sea you live. I've actually got a handy little guide to where it's possible all the canon trolls could have lived. It's not a totally canonical guide, but it's got the general principle down; http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/3533/hivelocations.png
PSYCHICS!! Trolls have psychics. Actually, let me rephrase that; LOWBLOODED trolls have psychics. I know Vriska is a psychic but to be very honest, Vriska is a rulebreaker by nature, and psychic blue+ bloods tend to sound pretty sueish. I recommend keeping the psychics at oliveblood and below.
As for what kind of psychics, once again, creativity is key! If you need help, HERE is a fun little thing:
http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Random. Just don't make them psychic gods. Common sense, you will probably be able to tell what's too much and what's a good fit.
This is the step I, personally, like best. You can get really damn creative here, and even if you aren't an artist, you can make a homestuck sprite with the mouse in paint easily enough. However, beyond that and despite all the hype I've been giving it, there's really not a lot I can say about it! A few things however;
- Trolls prefer practicality over fashion. They won't wear a TON of colorful things. A coat or a hat is fine.
- Troll horns should reflect some aspect of their symbol/theme. This doesn't necessarily mean LOOKING like the symbol, though some do that.
- Horns shouldn't be too huge. Don't make them gigantic. Remember; adult trolls are the ones with bigger horns.
- Sprite sheets can be found here! http://homestuckresources.tumblr.com/post/14777996782/thepageofawkward-homestuckresources-create-a
STEP VI: Finishing Touches
Last but not least, quirks, handles, lands and titles!
http://miffthefox.info/mspa/landgen/ is a great place to get started working with lands and titles, and even handles too, though I prefer to come up with my own handles so that they better fit the character. Lands and titles too, but if you're stuck, it's a great tool.
Another handle generator is here: http://home.netspeed.com.au/p.brooker/chumHandleGenerator/chumHandleGenerator.html Handles should reflect interests, definitely. Think about it: What would this character want to use as a screenname? Go from there.
Titles are always one-syllable words (Except "Seer" but it sounds like a one-syllable word.) and are formatted ___ of ____. There's a nice title test here (http://thepageofhopes.tumblr.com/post/13517446964/homestuck-title-test ) if you know enough about your character to take it. Otherwise, titles generally fit with a character's theme (Karkat's Knight of Blood, because he's a mutant. Gamzee's a Bard of Rage because he's a psycho clown. Ect.)
Lands will be based off of interests or personalities as well. I can't give you much advice for these; do what you think sounds right! I can tell you however that A.) Time players will always have the Scratch Device in their land, like Dave's Beat Mesa, and B.) Space players will always have Land of _____ and Frogs. Usually the frogs are trapped somehow too, like in Kanaya's water land and Jade's icy one.
Quirks should fit with a character's theme. Character is animal based? Look up some puns. Character has an obsession with being tidy? Put the quirk in brackets. You get the picture! If you're having trouble thinking of a quirk, consider prefixes/suffixes. I would stay away from alt-code symbols, but if it's just one and you roleplay on pesterchum, it can be okay. Just keep it readable! Obviously kids won't have quirks; but they still have typing styles. Something to think about for kids AND trolls: Capitalization, punctuation, grammar, spelling.
And that's it! Good luck on your roleplays or fansessions or whatever it is, pesterchum roleplays or Trollmegle shenanigans!
