Love the look of determination on this kidâs face. I hope he rocked it.

Transcript from an important moment in karate history.
Judo and jiu-jitsu are excellent ways to get in shape and develop new skills, and they complement striking-heavy arts like karate very well.

If you have a good instructor, you already know this stuff. On the other hand, if youâre just starting out, if your punches feel weak, or you canât figure out why youâre not generating as much power as your fellow students, then maybe youâll find this helpful.Â
Last nights Keiko at the Koryu Kyudokan..
Last night we studied and practiced the way of dealing with the habitual acts of violence..
We worked on dealing with the top ten Male on Male physical attacks as published by the home office for 2017-2018..
Last night was a little different as I let the students find the answers to each violent attack by choosing an Oyo from our kata they thought appropriate to deal with the attack devastatingly ..
I always preach both in the dojo and on seminars that if the purpose of your martial studies is that of self protection then you shouldnât have to change anything from your dojo Keiko and Renshu to have to deal with it..
I can never understand when I see karate dojo advertising the fact that that particular night they are going to have a self defence class !!!!!
Every karate class is a self protection class isnât it ???????
OR IT SHOULD BE âŠ
Many donât seem to understand that ALL kata were and should be a solo representation of two man fighting drills that of dealing with real violence, sadly most today have become completely the opposite of that..
All kata have within them..
Ways of dealing with ANY violent confrontationâŠ
Ways of best using the body to create enough power/ Shock to deliver a percussive strike or hydro static shockwave to render someone either unconscious or in no state to carry on..
How to breath.., there are many ways

I think this short essay By Chosin Chibana Sensei describes karate or Te as it should be..
âIn the old days we trained Karate as a martial art, but now they train Karate as a gymnastic sport. I think we must avoid treating Karate as a sport â it must be a martial art at all times! Your fingers and the tips of your toes must be like arrows, your arms must be like iron. You have to think that if you kick, you try to kick
Sometimes you want to keep it simple. This comfortable hoodie is perfect for cooler evenings, whether on the way to the dojo or while out and about with friends. âą 50% cotton/50% polyester âą Reduced pilling and softer air-jet spun yarn âą Double-lined hood

Hey, everyone
I have a friend that needs some help getting an insulin pump that he needs as soon as possible. If you can donate anything at all and/or share the link around, that would be greatly appreciated. It would greatly improve his quality of life. Please help in any way you can.
Thanks.

Greetings from Okinawa to all 100 Kata Challenge participants. First, apologies as we are a little behind schedule due to local typhoons, but here is the event poster for our upcoming challenge event on October 25th 2018. This year the p...
Due to our dojo and potential participants schedules, weâre participating tomorrow! Weâre not sure which kata weâre doing yet (we did Naihanchi last year, and my own students and I did a total of 100 reps of various kata the year before), but weâre looking forward to a great workout and learning a lot about our kata.
Anyone else participating?

Fall down seven times, stand up eight.
Jyunanshin and ShÔshin
As we all know, there are many principles, concepts and methods when it comes to martial arts. And Iâm not talking about your body movements:
Iâm talking about the mind.
In this, I would like to point out two of these âmindset conceptsâ
Jyunanshin
Jyunanshin (Jiyunanshin/Junanshin) refers to a supple mind that is willing to learn and is accepting of new ideas or ways of learning.Â
Literally, it composed of two ideographs: junan, meaning flexible or supple, and shin, used here to mean mind. It requires an attitude of patience, humility and trust.
Jyunanshin refers to a mind that is willing to accept new concepts and ideas in relation to the already known. The martial arts world is quite conservative and not prone to quick changes. However, if the change reflects a wisely chosen variation or difference due to todayâs living, then it may be valid.Â
Conversely, one should not just do away with the old methods, simply because they are old. If they still serve a valid purpose in training, and there is nothing newer that may be used, they should be kept. Jyunanshin is translated as an open mind.
Only those who keep their eyes opened for what they are not doing well enough can make changes in their movement and progress.
Shöshin
ShĂ”shin is perhaps a more widespread term. ShĂ”shin refers to having a beginnerâs mind.Â
Expertise is everything to us martial artists. We train all lives to attain expertise, but that level of understanding comes with a burden as well. We start to view things in a very specific, rigid way. A way that fits the narrative of our experience and knowledge thus far in life. We have trouble seeings things from a different perspective any longer.
Once, I was at a Shotokan karate seminar for a particular kata bunkai (Iâm a Wado practitioner myself). Now mind you, this was quite a few years back when I was still a kyu grade. The sensei showed the group a form to practice, including a very high block with the elbow against a mawashi geri (round house kick). Nothing wrong with that, but in Wado, we do not give our danshu (heart point) or arm pits away because they are soft, vulnerable points of the body.
We were paired up in teams of 3. Naturally, my partner and âWado-fiedâ the exercise a little, blocking only to the point that was necessary. But the third person, a Shotokan Shodan couldnât comprehend. We explained our methods and thoughts. He called the sensei and yelled: âSensei! Theyâre doing it WRONG!â
This is not ShÔshin. This is the sign of a martial artist who has (already) stopped progressing. Or perhaps, someone who does not understand karate well enough yet (like Shodan in my example).
ShÔshin is approaching every concept, technique and mindset like a beginner, open minded, without prejudice. Like when you took your first nervous steps in the dojo.
Are they the same thing?
Now these things sound very much alike.
Open mindedness / without prejudice
Supple mindedness / beginnerâs mind
Nope!
Jyunanshin refers more to staying critical of your own performance. Be willing to try new methods without discarding the old ones. Being hungry for more, be eager to improve your current self
ShÔshin refers to receiving knowledge, teachings and training without prejudice. Keep that same attitude of knowing nothing at all whilst knowing a lot already.
What both do emphasize is not to get set in your way.Â
Always search for your way forward in your martial arts journey.
In the sometimes chaos that is life I am one of the lucky ones for I can escape to my solace, my sanctuary, my dojo.. a place an iron will is forged and the spirit tempered. A place to hone both the skills and the mind to deal with violence, A place weâre your tested only against yourself.. A constant and perpetual student, always a beginner and NEVER a master.. Hours and hours of preparation for something we hope never happens, weâre the slightest improvements are our desired reward.. But of course only those than don the Gi will understand that to be tested, beaten and tested again is the stuff that makes us Bu and ultimately the stuff that makes us, US âŠ.
This isâŠ. quite beautiful.
This video was shot in the sixties, in London, in one of Suzuki Senseiâs first dojo. You can see this early style of Wado and how they are drilled by Sensei in the background.
You can also see beautiful examples of Ohyo Gumite (2, 4) executed by the inventor of these forms.
And yes ladies/girls, nowadays every girl should be able to fend for themselves. If that was valid for your mother (heck, GRANDmother?!) it sure as hell is for you.
Finally got a Sunday workout in again. Took it slow, did some technical work. (at AOK Eureka Dojo) https://www.instagram.com/p/BmGrZnBhvNX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bbkm6qi0t2wv
It's always a good idea to have a plan for your workouts, even if you don't set that plan until right before you start your workout. You'll get more done and you'll be able to keep moving. Teaching a class can be more organic, based on what's being accomplished and on students' grasp of the material. We find a personal workout, however, benefits from focus.
