Any story which refers to Haiti as an impoverished nation, which is all of them, should also mention that when Haitians won their independence from France, French gunships showed up and demanded they pay something like 22 billion dollars in today's money to compensate France for the stolen land and enslaved people they could no longer exploit
It took Haiti over a hundred years to pay that ransom and it's difficult to explain just how badly that fucked up their entire development, especially since France also demanded a 50% discount on everything they bought from Haiti just to make it harder. Like! No wonder they're impoverished!
Anyway if France would like to assist Haiti in its current difficulties they could always pay back the fucking money they extorted
I'm on a roll🫠
For the Nikki Wood show agenda😭

Well it being black history month is reminding me how I wanted to doodle something like this down for a while. Since it’s been a lil detail I always take notice of in drawings. These are very simple depictions but I hope it’s enough to give the general idea! Feel free to reblog
[Image description taken from alt: Drawing Scars on Brown/Dark Skin. The left illustration is how cuts and burns looks on brown and darker skin. Top level is the common depiction of using light pink to color it. So no melanin? typically not how most scars look. Of course there’s the condition of raised scars or stretch marks which could look lighter! Next row is showing how they are when scabbing which is reddish and dark. Third row is an aged, finished scar. Burns are marbled in look. They're darker than the skin tone. Last row shows how a fully or nearly fully healed scar, it's lightly visible but still darker than skin tone. Right illustration is a torso with scars with a diagonal cut to show the difference between left and right side. Left has pink light scars, healing? Or just an oversight? Right has darker colored scars. Normal. Same applies to top surgery scars. For recent surgeries that alter the areola, it is pink as it heals (nipples are pigmented on dark skin btw so it’s a weird look) After full care and recovery they’ll look normal (dark). End description.] @a-captions-blog

it's like . oh my god. no, i don't think a romance novel needs to be a sociopolitical thesis on the real life consequences of being closeted and queer (and in shane's case, autistic + racialized) in a highly bigoted environment, or the geopolitical implications of being a high profile queer russian athlete. but when the romance novel itself brings these things up, only to then brush them off like they're not real concerns as soon as the author stops wanting to think about them, that is both lazy writing and just plain insulting.
i do actually think it is offensive for an author to dismiss queer characters' concerns of homophobia as just internalized shame and selfishness and self-hatred and cowardice. i do actually think it is offensive for an author to bring up homophobic legistlation in russia as a major concern for an immigrant character only to then decide it doesn't matter to him at all, actually, because writing him as an immigrant and doing any research about immigration is somehow too much to ask of ~a romance novel~.
and frankly, i think people who go "oh my god it's just a romance novel!!! you guys are asking too much/reading too much into things!!! it's misogynistic to criticize the romance genre like this!!!" are actually far too comfortable insinuating that the entire romance genre is, by default, full of homophobia, racism, and lazy writing. i actually think it's entirely possible for romance novels to treat the subjects they invoke with care.
if reid didn't want to write about closeted queer people with any compassion, and instead wanted to accuse them of only being closeted because of shame, selfishness, and cowardice, she could have made up a fictional world in which homophobia is simply not as severe an issue as it is today. instead, she chose to invoke homophobia as it exists in the real world, and then simply victim-blamed her closeted characters for being impacted by it.
ultimately, she writes as though the closet is the ultimate sin. this is why she discards ilya's immigrant storyline and doesn't care about the impacts of russia on him as soon as it no longer plays into the ~forbidden romance~ trope in hr. the closet is evil, and wanting to stay closeted is shameful, and therefore ilya (her obvious favorite character) must want to come out. the long game follows the same exact formula as game changer, just with more cruelty in its ending. (it's like if game changer included two sentences about scott getting physically hatecrimed at the end, but glossed over it immediately because he was just sooooo happy to be out it didn't even matter.)
so like. yeah actually i don't think it's asking too much of a romance novel to engage respectfully with its own subject matter. if the author doesn't want to engage respectfully with a topic, then they should just... write about something else. i don't think this is rocket science as a concept.

here's how the buffyverse can come back in a big way: we finally do a nikki wood show!
i mean can you imagine how fucking cool a buffyverse show set in 1970s new york with a slayer like nikki wood as your titular character would be? there is sooo much unexplored about her.
was she called while she was pregnant, before, or after? who is robin's father? why isn't he in the picture? what was her day-to-day like; she clearly didn't have much help seeing as she was out late slaying with her young son. what was her interpersonal life like —that made her finally give into spike???
and besides the captivating character exploration that this show would present, can you imagine the rockin soundtrack potential? the costuming, the set design!? and i'm gonna need it to be shot on film (with good lighting and og btvs effects).
the next question is who would you cast as nikki?
No offense but about the oppressive regime stuff is there any documented example of Russia using interpol or other means to intimidate or harass Russian citizens abroad due to their sexuality? I can understand the Russian government going after political opponents living abroad as there are many reported examples of this but specifically targeting people due to their sexuality is something I'm not aware of but if you know of any examples please let me know.
Yes.
Salman Mukaev is a gay Russian man who fled to Armenia to escape persecution. Russian authorities then opened a case accusing him of illegal possession of weapons, issued a warrant and requested his extradition. He was trying to flee to France but wasn’t able to leave Armenia due to the extradition order. He wasn’t granted asylum in Armenia until 3 years after the failed attempt to go to France.
NC SOS (formerly part of the Russian LGBT Network) said that “he was threatened with a fabricated case of illegal weapon possession if he refused.”
Pink Human Rights Defender said the weapons possession charge was a “fictitious criminal case”.
NC SOS said many clients cannot be identified publicly because it would expose them to renewed danger. They publish only a small number of detailed cases with the client’s consent or using pseudonyms.
From the way she writes, it feels like Reid doesn’t view homophobia (or racism) as part of a systemic oppression permeating every aspect of our lives (a system in which we all participate). Instead, she frames it as an individual flaw, something only a "macho man" would possess, which can be "solved" off-page simply by calling out one bigot.
I don’t think she’s truly interested in world-building anyway, her writing is pretty character-driven. And that’s fine, but the way she chooses to both include and ignore aspects of real-life experience is so jarring. Almost dizzying.
She consistently takes real-world issues and dilutes them into inconsequential frictions. Here, the issue isn’t bigoted hockey culture or state persecution, but just a rivalry. Fabian’s parents aren’t homophobes, they’re just really into hockey ! Yet, somehow, everything still unfolds in this world?
And you can’t convince me that Ilya, a Russian man whose whole family is deeply embedded in the Party, wouldn’t feel some type of way playing for an Usamerican team! I checked, he was born in 1991! Give that poor character some substance 😭
